Hi all,

With some encouragement from Alloutwar, I'm going to try making several of the O's players who have debuted over the last couple of years. I'll try to stay realistic with them, so I appreciate any feedback. I want to start off with the guy who was perhaps the most fun rookie to watch in 2009, Brad Bergesen. I've tried making him before, but it's never turned out quite the way I've hoped. Here's what I want to shoot for.

Stamina: High B -- 145?
Control: Mid B -- 165?
Max Velocity: 94
Pitches:
2SFB: 2 (or 3?)
Slurve(?): 3 (or 2?)
Splitter(?): 2 (or 1?)

Abilities
w/ RISP 2
vs. LH Batter 2
Release 4
Good Low Pitch
Groundball Pitcher
Good Reflexes
Good Pace

Other Notes
Make his fielding good!

Appearance
Pitching Form: Three-Quarters 34
Face: 124
Hair: 20
Hair Color: 3
Glove: Black (2)
Bat: 3

I'm not completely sure what his breaking pitch and changeup should be. He calls the breaking ball a slider, but when he's throwing it well, it drops down a bit in addition to the lateral movement, so I'm thinking slurve. I saw in the thread for a PS2 version of him that the changeup should perhaps be a splitter, which I guess makes sense, to make the slurve his slowest pitch rather than the change. I might also go with an original pitch for one of those if that lets me make them move more accurately, but we'll see.

The one problem I see with this setup is that red abilities are hard to pick up and keep, and even with them, his ERA is simulated in the low 2s. That would be silly even if he were as good as his 2009 version, and it's completely ridiculous given his struggles in 2010. Any ideas how to get that ERA down while still making him accurate, or should I just not worry about it?

Good stuff! Here's some input from me - I don't get to see him much, but from my limited scouting:

from wikipedia:
Quote:
Brad Bergesen is a finesse pitcher and groundball pitcher who relies primarily on a sinker (sinking/two-seam fastball). He also uses a slider and changeup, the slider being his typical strikeout pitch.

Because his fastball averages a speed of about 89 mph, Bergesen relies on good control of his pitches and avoids walks, rather than striking lots of batters out. His ability to get many ground balls (50.1% ground ball rate in 2009) helps him limit hits to singles and get extra outs via the double play. He also has been adept at preventing hitters from hitting home runs throughout his professional career.

So from that, 2SFB is right, slider/slurve and split/chg is up to you.

I like him having high control, but B is a bit much - that's like Ace-level. I would stick at C or high D even, given his rookie status.
His fastball averages around 89 - so a max speed of 91 or 92 is fine. 94 might be a bit much? Has he hit that?
Same with Stamina, I'd take that down a notch. 123 IP in 19 starts, he's going 6/7 innings. Low/mid B is good, don't want him tossing CG's all the time.

Groundball P is good. Maybe fastball life 2? Lots of contact against him. Avoid Dr K and any strikeout abilities.

Overall, being that he's young an unproven (and the game will put him in 2008 by default), I would err on the side of caution and nerf abilities just a bit.

Good stuff though! Good luck on your effort!

Hahaha, I actually wrote most of Bergy's Wikipedia page, including that blurb. :P

Hm, yeah, this makes sense. I was going off of Eric Davis's scale for Control, but it did seem awfully high for a starter. I'll probably keep it in C, since good control was one of his strong points through the minors.

I'm pretty sure I've seen him hit 94. I've never tried making realistic players before, so I wasn't sure know how to handle this one... a top speed of 91-92 means he throws around 85 when in normal condition. I'll try dropping it to 92.

Yeah, good call.

Yeah, I really wish there were an ability or two for lack of strikeouts.

Ah, yeah, that's a good point about making him as he may have been at the start of '08. Hadn't thought of that.
