Bonds was never better against lefties than righties…not in 2001, not for his career. Vs Lefty 5 for a lefty is pretty far from accurate unfortunately.

I'm not sure how lifelike you are looking for, for your particular project, but it's worth being careful not to get Vs Lefty boosts for guys that do worse against lefties, IMO.

I mean no disrespect Alloutwar, but it is a pretty well known fact that Barry was better vs. lefties which was highly unusual for a lefty. Fan graphs started in 2002 so these are his splits for 2002:

Vs. LHP: 125 ABs .384 bavg 21 HRs

Vs. RHP: 278 ABs .363 bavg 25 HRs

As you can see Bonds experienced a DRAMATIC increase in HR% and a large increase in bavg as well. I believe that My rating was justified.

2002 (+20 pts against lefties) and 2003 (+30 pts) were an aberration - Bonds was the best hitter in the universe, and lefties were more likely to actually pitch to him. Notice the IBB numbers in your link alone - change half those RHP IBB's into hits, or even a fifth of them, and boom, he's better against righties. Even if he always hit lefties +25 pts, that might be vs Lefty 4 - but that's nowhere near any other time.

Literally any other year, AND during his career, his vs Lefty numbers are going to be worse - from a small tick like 15 pts over his career, to about 90 points worse in 2004:

Fangraphs is picky about their data (maybe?), but baseball-reference has more - including 2001, the year you were aiming for, when Bonds hit lefties .030 pts less and OPS'd about 200 pts lessagainst them. Certainly not a positive vs. lefty platoon there.

One or two seasons in a 20 year career can sometimes vary widely, especially with crazy IBB rates in a crazy peak like Bonds. The forum is here to help though - if you run things by guys here before making a player, you can end up with a more accurate representation, if you so desire. Lots of stat nerds kicking around on the site. :)

Bonds' wRC+ from 2002-2007:

vs L: 195
vs R: 205

so yeah he was better against RHP overall (although a 195 wRC+ is still god-tier imo)

While this may be, but look at his numbers vs. starting LHPs, in 2001 he hit .390. This is a far better representation rather than including the left specialists who shut Bonds down to relatively human numbers. he had 41 ABs vs relief LHPs and he had just 5 hits. For his career vs. LH starting pitchers he hit .306 in 2744 ABs and 12.76 AB/HR, compared to .296 vs. RH starting pitchers and 12.99 AB/HR. In the end this is a rather pointless argument, but Bonds was known for being unusually good versus left-handers and I rated him as such. I didn't look at these numbers before giving him that ability and that was my mistake, in real he was only marginally better at best, but for a lefty that is still impressive. Perhaps I should have given him a Vs. Lefty 4 instead of five, but that won't really have a major impact on his playability anyway. If you have any suggestions for any of the other players that I am going to make please feel free to give me your two sense, as you seem to be a fellow prudent baseball fan. I am always looking for help, anyone you know to be a serious baseball fan is welcome in my corner. I apologize for this debacle, this is not how I usually would introduce myself to someone, I'm Spiro by the way. It has been an Alloutwar, Alloutwar, hopefully in the future we can amalgamate our baseball knowledge for the bettering of all those on this forum.

Haha no worries man, it's your guy and all, I just got really into the real-life player creation on here for a while. We had a system and argued about things like this for weeks/months/years. I created real-life guys and eyeballed a rough contact rating, then found out (thanks to goobers here) that I was way off in my eyeballing. It's a decent community and can be helpful, except for the times the chat blows up with annoying people.

Welcome, enjoy, have fun, and keep playing the best baseball game that I've ever known (despite it's bugs with fielder control, ugh)

BTW, if you are looking for a voice to give Bonds so that the game will announce him, the firstname "Barry" is actually in the announcer library. It helps to keep things realistic when he steps up to bat.
