March 24th, 2008 - Sternberg Sells Rays, Team Relocated Less than a week before the 2008 MLB Season, shocking news is coming from Florida. Former Rays owner Stuart Sternberg, who has consistently voiced displeasure over the team's lack of success since entering as an expansion team in 1998, and the lack of fan attendance, has sold the Rays to multiple buyers from the same company in Jacksonville, FL. We do not know much about the new owners, except for the fact that they got their money from their computer company, which has skyrocketed in sales recently, causing a big boom in profits. The new owners have released all former Rays players from their contracts and will hold open tryouts for the next week, before the team's opener. The team will relocate from St. Petersburg to Jacksonville, and will change their name from the Rays to the Sunshowers, due to the daily sightings of those in Florida. A new stadium, Rainbow Beach Stadium, has been completed over the offseason and will be the home of the Sunshowers. The owners have made an online website on which fans can vote for a new uniform. Sunshowers Have New Uniforms, Logo After a 24 hour online fan vote, the winner of the new Sunshowers' uniforms and logo contest has been announced. The teams' tryouts have ended today as well, and results will be posted later tonight.

Before Free Agency Ends, Sunshowers Make Splash With Two Huge Signings The new owners have not decided on a manager yet, but they certainly helped whoever will fill that role by taking the last two big pieces off the free agent board before the signing period could end. The first big signing is SS Eqaunimeous Jackson. Entering his seventh season in the Majors, the 29-yr old left the Oakland A's over the offseason, demanding a large contract and immediate success. The Sunshowers look to give him just that with a 3-yr, $36 Million dollar deal. He is expected to be the team's DH due to his lapses in the field. The other big signing is an international one, SP Hirokazu Oshima from Japan. A prized pitching prospect, Oshima was offered lucrative deals from teams such as the Yannkees and Red Sox but said that he would hold out until the end for the best offer he could get. He accepted the Sunshowers' offer of 5-yrs, $45 Million dollars. He is expected to be the teams Opening Day Starter and Ace pitcher. More news will be coming from Jacksonville, as the list of players who have made the starting roster will be posted as tryouts have ended. Stay tuned for more updates. |
