September 29th, 2014 I woke up to an empty apartment. I supposed I should be used to it by now; it's been, what, nine years since I've held down a job and seven since I've had a family? I checked the clock; 9:30. I racked my mind for the date. 27th? 28th? Either way, I would need to pay rent soon. I rolled out of bed and into the bathroom. I was disgusted by the man I saw in the mirror. I need a shave, I thought, rubbing my hand over my chin. I reached for my razor, but fumbled with it and dropped it on the floor. I went back into my bedroom. I pulled back the curtains, and my eyes were attacked with vicious amounts of sunlight. I closed them again and laid down. When I awoke for the second time, it was after 11:00. I decided that was enough sleep, so I got up. I considered showering, but instead went downstairs to eat. I checked the pantry and pulled out a box of cereal, pouring a bowl before opening the fridge to find an empty gallon of milk. I sat down, about ready to just give up, when the phone rang. I debated letting the answering machine pick it up, but decided against it. "Hello?" "Hello, is this Matthew Weaver?" I paused. The voice on the other end was unfamilar. "Who's calling?" I asked. "Mr. Weaver, I'm sure your aware of the two expansion teams being introduced to the MLB next season?" A female voice inquired. I had heard of no such thing; I hadn't watched a baseball game in ten years. The voice on the other end continued, "The Honolulu Gunmen are in need of a General Manager, and were hoping you would be interested." "...How did you get this number?" "Is that a no?" There was a silence. "Mr. Weaver?" I was thinking. "Mr. Weaver, if you're not interested-" I stopped her, "No, no, I'm just... surprised is all. Of course I'm interested." "Excellent. We're scheduled for a meeting with the commissioner tomorrow. Do you have an e-mail address to which I could send you the details?" I told her. "Check your e-mail later today," she instructed, "and we'll see you tomorrow!" I hung up without another word. I couldn't believe what just happened. I booted up my rundown old PC and found out it was true. Two new expansion teams were being introduced into the MLB: The Sacramento Dolphins and the Honolulu Gunmen, both into the 4-team AL West. I turned on my TV, and for the first time in a decade, caught a Diamondbacks game. I didn't move until it was over. September 30th, 2014 I woke up at 8:00 sharp on Tuesday, the earliest I had in months. I rolled out of bad and hopped in the shower. I considered shaving, but decided I liked the thick 5 o' clock shadow I had developed over the last few days. I picked out my best clean shirt; a polo, and threw on the only pair of khakis I still owned. I headed out the door and down the stairs. On my way out, my landlady yelled to me, "Rent tomorrow, Mr. Weaver!" I gave her a smile and a wave. The smile felt weird; it was something I hadn't truly done in a long time. I stepped outside into the sweltering heat of Phoenix, Arizona. It was nearly October, but it was still a good 90 degrees out. I hailed a taxi, and gave him the address. By 9:00, I had arrived at a large office building. Upon my entrance, I was greeted by a woman. "Welcome, Mr. Weaver," she greeted me, and I recognized her voice from the phone. "If you'll have a seat over there, the meeting should be starting in a few minutes, once Mr. Greene arrives." Greene... I knew that name... Five minutes later, the door opened. "Well, well, well, if it isn't Matty Weaver." |

Very good job! Was the Mr. Greene part a nod to Preston Greene? Or is it actually Preston Greene? Either way, good job! |

What's so bad about guns? Guns don't kill people, people kill people. I like so far. ![]() |
