If you're keeping the same staff, Cooper Thompson would like to let you know he is quitting. He wants nothing to do with this organization and its changing ways |

March 31, 2008 Mets 0 Marlins 1 (13) W: O'Day (1-0) L: Saito (0-1) Opening Day resulted in a thrilling victory for Miami. The teams played 12 innings before a single run was scored. In the 9th, Mets starter Matt Cain exited with elbow pain with a 1-2 count to Josh Hamilton. The Marlins couldn't capitalize until the 13th, when Skip Schumaker drew a walk. Ryan Sweeney advanced him to second with a groundout, and up came relief pitcher Darren O'Day. Miami had already used its one bench player as a pinch-hitter so O'Day stayed in to bat. He hit a walk-off single, his first career hit, first RBI, and his first MLB win (he also won game MVP). April 1, 2008 Mets 2 Marlins 3 (16) W: Hammel (1-0) L: Lilly (0-1) It was another long game but Miami managed to pull it out. It went into extra innings tied at 1. In extras, Mets closer Mariano Rivera dominated Miami for 3 innings. Then, he exited the game with Ted Lilly replacing him. Lilly pitched a scoreless 15th then the Mets scored a run in the top of the 16th off Jason Hammel. In the bottom of the 16th, Miami quickly went to work. With 1 out, Ryan Sweeney hit a double. Jason Hammel drew a walk, and Jose Reyes hit a single to load the bases for Hanley Ramirez. Lilly threw a wild pitch, advancing the runners one base and scoring Sweeney, then Ramirez laced a pitch into center for a base hit, scoring Hammel and ending the game. Verlander did good in the first game, Reyes sucked. Reyes did well in the second game. |

April 2, 2008 Mets 3 Marlins 2 W: M.Rivera (1-0) L: McGowan (0-1) The scoring started in the 4th when Dan Johnson hit a 2-run homer off Mike MacDougal. In the 5th, the Mets scored on an RBI single by Jason Bartlett. Marlins starter Dustin McGowan was left in a bit too long and gave up a 2-run homer to Mark Teixeira. Mets closer Mariano Rivera pitched the last 3 innings and got the win. April 3, 2008 Pirates 1 Marlins 3 W: Marcum (1-0) L: Oviedo (0-1) S: Chamberlain (1) The Marlins won again in a home game against the Pirates. In the fourth inning, Hanley Ramirez led off with a single. With one out, Dan Johnson hit a single of his own to put runners on first and second for Carlos Quentin. Juan Oviedo threw a wild pitch, allowing both runners to advance one base. They both tried for an extra base, and Ramirez was thrown out at home, but Johnson was safe at third. Oviedo's next pitch was also wild and Johnson scored. Again in the 6th the Marlins had a runner on second, this time with two outs. Josh Hamilton took a fastball from Glen Perkins deep to left field for a 2-run home run. Pittsburgh started a small rally in the 7th as Carlos Pena hit a homer followed by a Miguel Montero single, but Marcum escaped the inning. The vertical slider is one of two pitches that I actually strike out against when it's used by an AI pitcher. The other being the knuckleball. A good vertical slider just seems unhittable in this game, it starts out looking like a straight fastball and it can just drop over half the length of the strike zone at the last possible moment, and if the vertical movement isn't enough, it breaks to the side as well, all very suddenly. |
