2009 World Series Game 1: Yankees Steal Homefield
The New York Yankees ripped home-field advantage right from the Padres with a 2-1 win Friday night. Yankees hurler Ian Kennedy had the night of his life, throwing seven innings and allowing one run on six hits. His counterpart Jake Peavy was his usual self, allowing 1 run while striking out 9 and allowing only 5 hits. His only blemish came in the third inning when Johnny Damon drove in former Padre Tony Clark to score the first run of the series. Kennedy's only blemish came in the seventh when he allowed a tying single to Khalil Greene. The game was tied until the ninth, when Joba Chamberlain allowed a crushing home run to former teammate Alex Rodriguez. With Mariano Rivera waiting, most knew there would be no way for the Padres to recover. The loss was a shocking result since many expected an offensive battle. Instead, the Padres offense failed to live up to the occasion and left 3 runners in scoring position. If they drove in any of these runners, it could have been a much different result. A game 2 win is essential or else the Yankees will be heavily favored to become repeat champion.

2009 World Series Game 2: You'd Have to See it to Believe It
Game 2 of the 2009 World Series will go down as one of the most incredible, unbelievable games in league history. At first, it seemed like an ordinary game with the Padres jumping out to a 3-0 lead on two home runs from Jack Cust and a solo shot from V-Mart. With a 3-0 lead and John Lackey rolling, the Padres appeared to have an even series in the bag. Yet, it was no longer smooth sailing in the ninth. Firstly, Orlando Hudson misplayed a sharp grounder to let a runner on. After recording an out but letting two on, John Lackey felt a sharp pain in his elbow and could not continue. Bud Black turned to Cla Meredith instead of Joba Chamberlain with the tying run at the plate. With two outs on two on, Johnny Damon lined a sharp line drive to center. Instead of letting it fall and loading the bases for an 0-4 Ricardo Alvarez, Aaron Albion attempted to dive for the ball and missed it entirely. This mishap allowed Johnny Damon to cruise around the bases for a game-tying inside-the-park home run. Petco Park was stunned into complete silence, but this did not last long as Jack Cust continued his heroic night. Cust homered on a sharp line drive to left, his third of the game, and the signature moment of his career. It was a shocking result in a game that began so ordinarily, but it will surely be remembered as a historic night.

2009 World Series Game 3: Tony Clark Stuns His Former Team
It was the Yankees' turn for a walk-off win tonight, and it came from ex-Padre Tony Clark. It was a back-and-forth game up until Clark's walk-off, starting with an RBI single from another ex-Padre- Ricardo Alvarez. The lead didn't last very long as Victor Martinez tied the game with a solo homer, but the tie didn't last long either after a Torii Hunter single. The back-and-forth nature of the game continued after Khalil Greene tied the game with another solo shot. Disaster struck in the next inning when Greg Maddux felt a sharp pain in his elbow and could not continue pitching. It marked the second straight start in which Maddux was forced to exit early, and it may very well be the hall-of-famer's final big league appearance. Heath Bell relieved Maddux and allowed a go-ahead hit to Alex Rodriguez. The game never felt the same after this, and Bobby Abreu re-inforced the Yankees' lead with a solo home run in the sixth. With a 4-2 lead heading into the ninth, the Yankees looked set for a 2-1 series lead, but they had to deal with the top of San Diego's order. Victor Martinez crushed his second homer of the game to make it 4-3. Two batters later, Jack Cust came through with more heroics, tying the game at 4. It was Cust's fourth home run of the series and eighth of the postseason. Although it seemed like the Padres now had all the momentum, they ran into a red-hot Tony Clark in the bottom half of the ninth. Clark drove a home run to center off Cla Meredith to shock the Padres and give the Yankees a 2-1 lead. Game 4 is now an absolute must-win for the Padres, as if they win, the Yankees will have to beat Jake Peavy or John Lackey at Petco. If they lose, the Yankees can clinch at home in Game 5.

2009 World Series Game 4: Padres One Loss Away From Heartbreak
The Padres are one loss away from a shocking elimination from the World Series. This was the third consecutive game with a walk-off finish, but the Padres were on the worst end of it again. They went into a hole early, trailing 2-0 after a Bobby Abreu homer. This did not faze them as they went on to hit four solo home runs from Jack Cust, Khalil Greene, Callix Crabbe, and Orlando Hudson. Yet, the issue of not being able to put runners on base sunk them again. The Yankees roared back, tying the game on an RBI double from Ricardo Alvarez in the 8th. The Padres are regretting their decision to send him to an AL contender, although Rudy Seanez did record two key outs tonight. In the ninth, it took only one Kerry Wood slider for Jorge Posada to deliver yet another heroic playoff moment. Posada hit a no-doubt shot to straightaway center, stunning the Padres and putting the home team one win away from their 28th ring. The Padres will now need a miraculous run to win their title, but the odds seem highly slim.

2009 World Series Game 5: Yankees Win Second Consecutive Championship. Padres Stunned.
The New York Yankees won their 28th world championship and second in a row with a 9-4 win. The game was over as soon as the first inning as the Yankees scored six runs. Chris Young only recorded one out before being pulled. It was a blow the Padres could not recover from. Bud Black was reportedly so frustrated with Young's lack of preparation that he asked the front office to deal Young in the offseason. The Friars' bullpen saved the game from becoming an all-out embarrassment, allowing only 3 runs in 8.1 innings. Jack Cust hit his tenth postseason home run to make it a close 6-4 contest, but the Yankees pulled away in the final innings. Alex Rodriguez, who was named series MVP, delivered the crushing blow with a 2-run homer in the sixth. The Padres put two runners on in the ninth, but Kevin Kouzmanoff popped out to Ricardo Alvarez. The Yankees secured back-to-back titles for the first time since 1998-2000 by shocking the best regular-season team. It will be a long winter for shocked Padres fans, and there is not much to console them from this. Although this was the best regular season in Padres history, it won't mean much without a ring. The front office will now turn their attention to making their team better than the Yankees, which may or may not be possible.

2009 MLB AWARDS: Jake Peavy Named Cy Young, Rewarded With Max Deal
It surprises no one, but Jake Peavy has officially been named the 2009 National League Cy Young. Peavy was a near-unanimous choice, though teammate John Lackey did receive some first, second, and third-place votes. Peavy's season was even better than his 2007 Triple Crown campaign, as his ERA has nearly under 2. Peavy also threw two fewer innings than he did in 2007, which is remarkable given the Padres used a 6-man rotation for the whole season. He may have finished with an ERA under 2, but he had a rough outing in the final game of the regular season. To reward Peavy, the Padres announced a 5-year, $150 million extension to shock the baseball world. With this extension, Peavy broke the record for the highest annual average value per contract in MLB history, breaking World Series MVP Alex Rodriguez's record by $2.5 million. Peavy definitely deserved his record-breaking deal as he was worth 11 WAR in 2009, but it will surely be a point of debate whether Peavy will have more or less pressure in San Diego now in what is likely going to be a dry offseason due to the team's success and the need for many raises. Peavy was not the only award winner as the team became the first team in which every infielder won a Gold Glove. The Padres were tremendous defensively, setting a record for the least amount of errors in a season. Additionally, Victor Martinez, Orlando Hudson, and Jack Cust each won a Silver Slugger award for the best hitter at their position. In a record-breaking season, it was to be expected that the Padres would win so many awards, but few predicted so many individual winners. Next season, the goal will be to have the MVP as well as a World Championship.

2009 Free Agency Recap: Padres Add Former Foe Brandon Webb to the Mix
The Padres announced a 1-year, $3,570,000 deal with former Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb. Like John Lackey last season, Webb is a bit of a reclamation project, coming off a season with an ERA of nearly 5. Webb seemed out of place in Kansas City and really struggled against American League hitters. Webb will now return to the National League West on a prove-it deal, and the 31-year-old will look to become a fixture in an elite rotation. Webb will likely be the Padres' #3 starter barring any unforeseen moves. It was a much quieter offseason in San Diego thanks to major extensions, so Webb was the team's only signing. The team cut payroll by shipping World Series scapegoat Chris Young to the Nationals, as well as Kerry Wood to the Mets. Some fans voiced their displeasure with the Padres' offseason, claiming they didn't do enough to win the World Series this time around. However, with a payroll limit in place, the Padres will have to make prudent financial choices while maintaining their best-ever roster.

2010 NL West Predictions: Padres Primed for Another Playoff Run

1. San Diego Padres 104-58
The San Diego Padres won the division by nearly 30 games in 2009 and there is no reason to doubt they will run away with the division again. The team added Brandon Webb in free agency to establish a trio of Jake Peavy, Brandon Webb, and John Lackey that will terrify opposing hitters. Although they had to let some relievers walk to afford some contract extensions, they have young relievers available in the system. Offensively, Jason Blackburn will be major-league ready in 2010. Blackburn will likely platoon with either Aaron Albion or Jason Kubel in the outfield. The offense was hit-or-miss at points in 2009, illustrated in the postseason. Adrian Gonzalez had a down season by his high standards, but if he returns to his 2008 form in 2010, the Padres could boast the league's best offense and pitching staff.
MVP: Jake Peavy
Breakout: Jason Blackburn
Bust: Anibal Sanchez

2. Colorado Rockies 85-77
The Rockies finished 79-83 last season, which was still good enough to finish tied for second in the division. Roy Halladay was acquired in 2008 to offset the Coors factor in the rotation, but Halladay struggled in 2009 with an ERA hovering around 5. If Halladay pitches up to his usual standard in 2010, the Rockies will definitely improve. Franklin Morales is also an upstart pitcher who could potentially impact the rotation's outlook and will likely be the team's X-factor. The team's lineup is as good as ever and finished second in the division in batting average last year. Todd Helton, Garrett Atkins, and Troy Tulowitzki form one of the best offensive trios in the entire league. Although their power numbers were down in 2009, any increase will have the lineup in great shape. However, the team failed to make significant moves this offseason and will most likely miss the playoffs because of it.
MVP: Todd Helton
Breakout: Franklin Morales
Bust: Jeff Francis

3. Arizona Diamondbacks 81-81
The Diamondbacks missed the postseason last year after consecutive division titles. If they had won just five or six games against the Padres, they would have won around 85 games. It is clear that the division's new best is the nemesis of the Diamondbacks, who just cannot seem to figure them out. The team's current roster would have had the most hits in the division by a large margin, led by star first baseman Conor Jackson. The Big Unit is returning for his age 46 season, but it is unclear how much he will regress due to age. He had a solid season in 2009 but missed some time due to injury. Dan Haren is the team's ace, and if he puts together a strong season, the D-Backs could be Wild Card contenders.
MVP: Conor Jackson
Breakout: Justin Upton
Bust: Randy Johnson

4. San Francisco Giants 75-87
The Giants disappointingly finished 74-88 in 2009. The team's pitching was atrocious, with most pitchers hovering around the 4.50+ ERA mark. Barry Zito was shockingly bad with an ERA of 6.50 in 170.1 innings. Derek Lowe was almost as bad with an ERA of 5.60. The rotation was expected to be second-best behind San Diego's, but finished as the worst instead. They didn't make any new additions, so they will need bounceback campaigns from every starter to avoid another disaster in 2010. The team is much better at the plate as the current roster would have led the NL West in runs scored. Shane Victorino reached the 200-hit mark in 2009 and was the team's best hitter without a doubt. Ryan Garko also broke out, hitting 29 home runs with a .949 OPS. This offense is solid enough, but it will all depend on the untrustworthy starting pitching for the team to avoid another terrible season.
MVP: Shane Victorino
Breakout: Jonathan Sanchez
Bust: Curt Schilling

5. Los Angeles Dodgers 67-95
After losing Andruw Jones to the New York Yankees, the rebuild is underway in LA. James Loney is now the team's lone star hitter, but aside from him, most hitters batted under .280 last year. The team's current roster would be last in runs, hits, home runs, and stolen bases in the 2009 NL West. The pitching staff is not good enough to offset the massive loss of Andruw Jones. Brad Penny was the team's ace in 2009, but he was nothing to write home about. Paired with Hiroki Kuroda, Francisco Liriano, and Jason Schmidt, the rotation is not weak, but rather around 20th best in the league. To overcome their weak lineup, the staff would need to be around the league's best. Instead, LA will look to get the top overall pick in the 2011 draft as their season goal.
MVP: James Loney
Breakout: Francisco Liriano
Bust: Juan Pierre

2010 Spring Training Recap: Padres Go 4 For 4, Martinez Shines
The San Diego Padres seem primed for another dominant season after winning all four featured Spring Training games. Victor Martinez hit six home runs through the four games, including four in the last of the games. Other standouts included Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Kouzmanoff, both of whom appeared to put a disappointing playoff run behind them. Rookie Jason Blackburn hit one home run and out-performed Aaron Albion, but it appears the team will go with an outfield platoon between Blackburn, Albion, and Kubel. Francisco Jaramillo was also stellar, allowing zero runs in three innings and securing a spot in the Opening Day rotation. In their four featured games in 2009, the Padres went 2-2. While this doesn't mean much, it may show improvement in the offensive end, which will be crucial to a World Series title in 2010.

April 3, 2010: Padres Drop Season Opener
The Padres started the highly-anticipated 2010 season in poor fashion. While the Giants are not expected to be contenders this season, they outplayed the consensus division favorites. Jake Peavy made his first post-megadeal start with the scrutiny on him. Critics got their wish when Peavy allowed a 2-run single to Steve Holm in the second. After this though, Peavy did not allow a single run to score. The ace easily justified his contract value with 11 strikeouts through 8 3-hit innings. Yet, as was the case in most of 2008, the Friars' offense was dormant. Their lone run came via a solo Jason Kubel home run in the fifth. Baserunners were once again hard to come by as the team failed to walk once in the contest. The offense looked more like it did in the World Series than the 2009 regular season, which is a cause for concern. Still, it is only Opening Day- which this Padres roster has not done well on historically.

April 15, 2010: Padres Embarrass Rockies Pitching in Four-Game Coors Sweep
The San Diego Padres lead the Majors in home runs by a wide margin after a stunning sweep of the Rockies. Every Padres starter minus Khalil Greene and Aaron Albion homered in the series, while Kevin Kouzmanoff increased his overall home run total to ten. It was clear it would be a dominant win from the first inning when Adrian Gonzalez and Jack Cust homered to give the team a 3-0 lead. The team then scored three more runs in the second via home runs from Jason Kubel and Victor Martinez. Brad Hawpe was the only Rockie to perform well in the series, hitting two home runs in this contest. Jake Peavy performed well despite a difficult environment, finishing with 7 strikeouts and 2 earned runs through 8 innings. With the loss, the Rockies fell to a shocking 1-11. All signs indicate the team will be sellers if the downfall continues. If the Padres are involved in the trade market, it may be interesting to see if they will consider a deal with their division rival. San Diego's current pace is matching their 2009 start, so keeping it up will certainly lead to another dominant regular season.

Mid-April 2010 Update: Padres Matching 2009 Start
The Padres started 10-3 in 2009 and are now off to the same start this year. At this time in 2009, their team ERA was nearly under 1. This time, it stands at 3.50. This is mostly due to some bullpen struggles, with Andrew Brown carrying an ERA of 9 and Cla Meredith carrying a higher ERA than usual. Greg Maddux's ERA is also high at 6.75 ERA, but he has not seen many innings due to a strict limit. The team will likely look into adding young relievers and trade additions as the season progresses. Offensively, the Padres are much better than they were at this point last year. Kevin Kouzmanoff leads the league in home runs after his slow start, with Jack Cust and Jason Kubel trailing by just a slim margin. Their numbers are likely inflated by the Coors Effect and a horrific Rockies team, but it is still a positive sign that they look to be better at the plate than they were last year.

So far your Game 1 and 2 predictions have been the opposite of right, so I'm gonna predict the Indians have a 3-1 lead after Game 4.

April 30, 2010: Padres Falter to 2-Games Behind in Loss to Cubs
The San Diego Padres, who only spent a handful of games outside of first in 2010, now face a 2-game deficit to the San Francisco Giants. They have struggled mightily against the Chicago Cubs this season, and tonight was no different. The team trailed early as Brandon Webb's disappointing start to the season continued. Webb was able to find a groove, but like many Padre pitchers in 2010, he received no offensive help. The only run was scored in the fourth, driven in via a Jack Cust base-hit. Kosuke Fukudome responded with a solo shot in the sixth to secure yet another win for Chicago. After a 10-3 start to the season, the Padres are now 16-1, meaning they have gone 6-9 in their last 15. They are currently on a 4-game slide, and as this was only the first game against Chicago, the streak may continue in early May. It cannot be classified as a crisis yet, but it is certainly an underwhelming position compared to this time last season when the Friars were 21-7.

April 2010 Recap: Padres Fall to Second
After four straight losses, the Friars now find themselves in second place- two games behind the upstart San Francisco Giants. The main reasons for their struggles involve a lack of free-agent additions and an offense that is reliant on home runs for their offensive output. With several offseason extensions, San Diego only added Brandon Webb, who has been slightly disappointing this year. While his ERA is still in the 3s, it is higher than what would be expected and may be prone to some regression. Yet, there are no glaring weaknesses on this roster, so it may be premature to declare the offseason a failure. Offensively, the team leads the division in home runs, hits, and batting average. Despite these advantages, they are only third in runs scored. Drawing walks has been the Achilles heel of this team, arguably costing them a World Series. These issues are still prevalent in the first month of 2010. There have been some bright spots, namely Jack Cust (as always) and Kevin Kouzmanoff. If Kouzmanoff continues his torrid streak, he may ultimately be the team MVP this season. While the team is two games behind, there is plenty of time left in the first year of the new decade.
