June 2009 Update: Padres Start off Slow, But Finish Third Month With .500+ Record
The San Diego Padres went through a rough patch at the start of the month with a 4-8 record, but they were able to turn things around in the second half of June. They capped off the month with a 10-4 record, taking advantage of some weak interleague opponents. The team's pitching staff remains exceptional as their combined ERA is 2.94. In the last update, the team's bullpen was going through a near-crisis. Fortunately, the relievers settled down in the last two weeks, maintaining several close leads. The main story has been the resurgence of Adrian Gonzalez, who has hit 9 home runs in the past two weeks. With A-Gon heating up, the Padres' offense is even more formidable. Jack Cust leads the entire league with 30 home runs as his success story has proved to be one of the most interesting in the league over the past two years. The Padres now lead their division by 7 games- a much more comfortable figure than their 4-game advantage in the last update. July 2009 will be a pivotal month in the history of the franchise as a crucial trade could be in line to put the team over the top.

Padres Acquire Anibal Sanchez From Marlins In First Trade of 2009
Image
Image

The Padres have decided to bolster what was already the best rotation in the league through the addition of Anibal Sanchez from Florida. Despite a strong showing in the first few weeks in the season, the 25-year-old has spent months with Florida's AAA affiliate. The Marlins did not have a single centerfielder on their roster, and so the addition of Chris Denorfia will shore up that position. For the Padres, it may be a position battle between Aaron Albion and Jason Blackburn in the future, with Albion taking the position for the time being. There will also be a competition between Chris Young and Anibal Sanchez for the final spot in the team's playoff rotation. With Young seemingly regressing, the door may be open for Sanchez to make a name for himself in San Diego.

July 18, 2009: Giants Squander 7-1 Lead to Padres in Stunning Finish
Following the top of the eighth inning of the final game before the All-Star Break, it appeared that the Giants would avoid a sweep and end the Friars' win streak. Curt Schilling was rolling while Chris Young was laboring, and it looked like it would be the Friars' first blowout loss in a long time. Yet, when all seemed lost, the Padres came alive. It was a station-to-station rally, as none of the 6 runs scored in the comeback were scored on a home run. Instead, the Padres prioritized contact and were able to find space in the Giants' defense. Kevin Kouzmanoff had the biggest hit of the eighth inning, an RBI single that cut San Fran's lead to one. Cla Meredith prevented the Giants from putting it out of reach, giving his team a chance to tie or win. Aaron Albion, the rookie who was given a major opportunity following the Chris Denorfia trade, reached base and immediately stole second. Pinch hitter Ricardo Alvarez popped out, but the clutch hitting Orlando Hudson stepped up. Hudson hit a sharp grounder to short, the ball bounced off the diving shortstop's glove, allowing Albion to score the tying run. Petco Park erupted into cheers, which wouldn't be the last time that happened tonight, as Kevin Kouzmanoff once again played the hero with a tenth inning walk-off. The stunning victory illustrates just how dangerous this Padres team can be with all players clicking. The team extended their grip on the NL West to a 14-game lead.

2009 All-Star Break Update: Padres Goal is Clear: Win the World Series
At this time in 2008, predicting the Padres to be the next National League powerhouse would be nonsensical. Yet, as the season currently stands, the team claims a 14-game lead in the NL West as well as a 7-game advantage in the entire NL. The team came into the break sizzling, winning nine straight, capped off by a thrilling victory over the Giants. They are powered by a trio in the 30-HR club, as well as a trio in the sub-2.50 ERA club. The team will send six All-Stars (Peavy, Maddux, Lackey, Young, Martinez, Cust) to St. Louis, and it could be argued that the team deserved 8 or 9 (Greene, Hudson, Kouzmanoff). Regardless of snubs, the Friars will be well-represented in St. Louis, and fans are hoping for a repeat of 2008 where the Padres were almost entirely responsible for the NL victory. This time, they will have a stake in the outcome as the heavy NL favorite. In a way, their fate is in their own hands with so many players on the All-Star roster, but fans will likely be upset with an American League victory. It's a bit disappointing to see a 9-game winning streak disrupted, but the All-Star Game will be a welcome event for the fans, a needed rest for the players who did not make it, and a tremendous opportunity for those that were selected to play.

2009 MLB All-Star Game: Greg Maddux Wins Controversial MVP, Becomes Second Straight Padre to Win Award
It was a great night to be a Friar Faithful as the National League claimed home-field advantage for the 2009 World Series, which the Padres are heavily favored to reach. In additional good news, Greg Maddux was given the honor of the MVP as the winning pitcher, becoming the second straight Friar to win the honor (Adrian Gonzalez in 08). This did not come without controversy, however, since Maddux was relatively pedestrian. Maddux gave up more hits than any National League pitcher. Aramis Ramirez was the only player to have a memorable impact, driving in the only run with a solo home run. This led to speculation that the 43-year old may be in the twilight of his career, but Maddux has made no comments regarding his future as of now. If this is truly his last season, it will be crucial for the Padres to win a World Series in his final season. If they play the Cubs in the postseason, there will now be a bit of extra drama involved.

2009 Trade Deadline: Padres Deal Alvarez to New York For Chamberlain, Seanez, Gordon
Image
The San Diego Padres are not done adding to their loaded pitching staff, adding Joba Chamberlain and Rudy Seanez to the mix. To acquire them, they sent up-and-coming middle infielder Ricardo Alvarez to the Bronx. The Yankees had a void in the middle infield following the shocking trade of Derek Jeter to the Angels, but they will now have a dynamic middle infield duo of Ricardo Alvarez and Robinson Cano. The Yankees had a surplus of third basemen with four on the roster, so they sent Great Gordon (Wilson Betemit) to San Diego. Some Padre fans are disappointed in the move as they had high expectations for Ricardo Alvarez, but the emergence of Orlando Hudson limited Alvarez's at-bats to the point where he requested a trade. The early returns are yet to be seen, but this trade appears to be mutually beneficial on paper.

July 31, 2009: Padres Win a Pyrrhic Victory, Lose V-Mart For a Month
The Padres won their fourteenth game against the Arizona Diamondbacks this season, but it was not without heartbreak. In the second inning, All-Star catcher Victor Martinez collided with the backstop, falling awkwardly. After evaluation on the field, V-Mart was helped into the locker room and pulled from the game. It was later determined that the San Diego star would be sidelined for the next month, a shocking blow to a red-hot team. In the meantime, Josh Bard will become the starting catcher. It was rumored that Bard was seeking a trade due to a lack of opportunities, but he has now been granted a chance to prove himself after a Gold Glove season in 2008. On the field, the Friars were stifled by the Big Unit until the 7th. Jack Cust was the first to be patient at the plate, working the count to full. On the payoff pitch, Cust drove a fly ball over the left-field fence, tying the game. Following him, Kevin Kouzmanoff built off the momentum with a solo home run of his own, giving San Diego the lead and knocking Randy Johnson out of the game. Jake Peavy was thankful for the run support and finished the game without relief, striking out ten total. The Padres were pleased to win their 70th game of the season, but it is unclear how they will fare without their star catcher.

July 2009 Update: Padres Fly To Best Month in Recent Team History, But Now Face Adversity
The Padres only lost five games in the month of July, including a 13-game winning streak (second-longest in team history). They scored 113 runs while only allowing 63, showcasing their overall strength. Yet, it wasn't all positive news for San Diego this month as Greg Maddux and Victor Martinez each suffered lengthy injuries. The team has the depth to offset these losses but losing two All-Stars would be disheartening for any team. The Padres are currently dominating the NL West, holding a 17-game lead with their remarkable 70-36 record. For reference, the team did not win 70 games until mid-September in 2008. Clearly, the numerous acquisitions the team has made have paid immense dividends, and the team will set their sights on the 2009 postseason with a near-guaranteed playoff appearance.

August 12, 2009: Padres Stun Phillies on Kouzmanoff's Grand Slam
For 8.5 innings, it appeared as if the Padres were going to lose consecutive games for the first time since July 5-7. Chris Young had yet another solid outing with 9 strikeouts in 6 innings, giving up three runs. Prince Fielder has been a thorn in the Padres' side this series as he has crushed four home runs in only two games so far. The Padres cut Philadelphia's lead down to 3-2, but newest addition Rudy Seanez imploded in the seventh, allowing 4 runs. This seemed to knock the Padres out of it, but this team refuses to give up. They got a key run across in the 8th, but the real rally came in the ninth. Philadelphia decided to pull Adam Eaton from the game despite an abnormally low pitch count, turning to Brad Lidge to close the door. This decision blew up in their faces as Lidge quickly got into trouble, loading the bases and giving up a run to make it 7-4 when Kevin Kouzmanoff stepped up to the plate. Kouzmanoff has had a clutch gene throughout the season, and he once again came through with a remarkable walk-off grand slam over the right-field fence. Pandamonium ensued throughout Petco Park as the Padres pulled off yet another dramatic late comeback.

August 15, 2009: Padres Blow Late Lead, Ruin Maddux's Return
Greg Maddux finally returned to the Padres rotation, but he struggled to begin the game. Maddux allowed four runs in the opening inning but settled down to finish with 8 strikeouts in six innings. San Diego's offense gave him plenty of support, however, as they tied the game at 4 in the third. Adrian Gonzalez has had a tremendous month of August and has reached the 40-home run mark for the second consecutive year. He tied Jack Cust with the home run, but Cust immediately followed him with a homer of his own, tying the game at 4. The game was silent until the eighth when Orlando Hudson showed his clutch gene once again, driving in the go-ahead run. Usually, the Padres hold on to late leads, but tonight was a different story. Clay Hensley was brought in with 1-out in the ninth, less work than usual. This seemed to throw him off though as he was rocked immediately after entering the game. Hensley allowed both the tying run and the eventual winning run on a Ken Griffey Jr. double. It was a frustrating night for San Diego, who could have won their 80th game of the season had they held on to the late lead. Instead, they fall to 79-41.

Mid-August 2009 Update: Padres Attempting to Become Earliest Division Winner in League History
As it currently stands, the San Diego Padres have a commanding lead in the National League West. The team leads the second-place Giants by an incredible 21-game margin, a margin that is almost unheard of. At their current pace, the team will become division champions by early September. Additionally, the team leads the Mets by 8 games for the top seed in the National League, a smaller cushion compared to the division but still a significant lead. With home-field advantage in the World Series secured for the National League due to the All-Star victory, the Padres may be able to narrow their focus to conditioning and allowing young players a chance by mid-late September. As is the case with any dominant team, there will be immense pressure on the Padres to perform in the postseason, so mental strength and focus will be the key factors to a World Series run. In the month of August, the team has faced two significant injuries to stars Greg Maddux and Victor Martinez, but they have yet to falter despite these adversities. In their last game, the bullpen squandered a 2-run lead in the ninth, so their resolve will also be tested in the next few weeks. As was the case since the early months of the season, it is a question of when, not if the Padres will make the postseason.

August 31, 2009: Comeback Effort Falls Short
San Diego lost their final game of an eventful month this afternoon, falling 4-3 to the Los Angeles Dodgers. San Diego struck first on a Kevin Kouzmanoff double, which was set up by a single and stolen base from Aaron Albion. The Dodgers struck back almost immediately, leveling the score in the bottom half of the same inning. The Dodgers then took the lead on a small ball rally in the fourth. The game was 2-1 for a good amount of time until Cla Meredith entered the game in the seventh. Meredith allowed a 2-run home run to Andre Ethier on the first pitch he threw, putting LA in front by three runs. The Padres have been known to be especially resilient with many comebacks this season, and they almost did the same in the ninth. They scored two runs in the inning, but they were scored on a groundout and a wild pitch. Aaron Albion had a two-out opportunity with a runner on second, but he grounded out to third to end the game. The Dodgers have played the Padres fairly evenly in 2009, unlike many teams in the NL West, and they can even the season series with a win on September 1st. The Padres now lead the red-hot New York Mets by only five games for home-field advantage throughout the entire NL postseason, so September will be a pivotal month for the team.

August 2009 Update: Padres On the Verge of Division Crown
As the rosters near expansion, the San Diego Padres are most likely within a week of clinching the NL West crown for the first time in three seasons. August was an eventful month for the Friars due to Victor Martinez's significant injury. Luckily, Josh Bard has proven to be a solid option as a backup catcher, currently carrying an average over .300. The team went 18-9 over the month, scoring 121 runs and allowing 91 runs- good enough for their third-highest monthly winning percentage of the season. It is not all smooth-sailing for the team, however, as the New York Mets have emerged as the hottest team in baseball in the past month. The Mets soared to a 23-4 record in August, scoring a remarkable 218 runs and allowing only 104. The Mets beat the Padres five times this season, while San Diego only won once in an extra-inning replay. With this in mind, the Padres are not the runaway favorite they once seemed. Their lead over the Mets is only five games, so if the two teams had the same record as they did in August, the Mets would earn home-field advantage in the NL. While the Padres can look forward to celebrating a division crown, there is still work to do.

September 5, 2009: Padres Clinch NL West Crown
Image
The San Diego Padres have officially clinched the National League West title! They defeated the Florida Marlins 6-4 in extra innings, powered by Victor Martinez's two go-ahead home runs. With the win, the Padres made history as the earliest team to clinch a division crown, beating the 1995 Cleveland Indians' previous record by three days. The win was predicted by many experts in the offseason due to an aggressive offseason, but clinching a playoff appearance is always exciting nonetheless. The team's attention will now turn to the home-field advantage race, which is far more intense. The Mets trail the Padres by only four games and are currently on an 11-game winning streak. For now, the Padres can celebrate the culmination of an accelerated rebuild, but there is still much more work to do.

September 17, 2009: Padres Win 100th Game of Season
The San Diego Padres have made franchise history by winning their 100th game of the season, becoming the first Padres team to ever reach this feat. It was fitting that future hall-of-famer Greg Maddux was on the mound for the historic win. Although Maddux was subpar with 4 earned runs in 5 innings pitched, but the Padres offense made up for it. In the fourth, Khalil Greene and Kevin Kouzmanoff crushed back-to-back home runs, giving San Diego the lead. As was the case for most of the game, the Giants struck right back and kept the game close. Shane Victorino homered off Clay Hensley in the seventh to cut San Diego's lead to one, and the Giants drove in the tying run with a clutch single in the 8th. In the ninth, the Padres put the go-ahead run aboard with an Aaron Albion single and stolen base. Rookie outfielder Derek McRae was called on to pinch-hit, and the 19-year old rookie drove in the eventual winning run with a single to right field. Joba Chamberlain continued his save streak with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. The Padres now sit at an aesthetically pleasing 100-50 and are on the verge of clinching the top seed in the National League.
