How The Padres Will Contend: Age Just a Number For Legendary Greg Maddux
Image
As we await the return of the Padres to Spring Training, this series will examine the keys to San Diego's contention in 2009. As was the case the last two seasons, a major key to San Diego's success will be the sustained health and performance of future hall of fame starting pitcher Greg Maddux. This was no issue last season, as Maddux finished second in the entire league in ERA, an impressive feat for a 42-year-old. More importantly, Maddux led all Padres starters in innings with 195.1, which is especially astounding since he missed two weeks with an elbow injury. Luckily, the injury did not seem to be an indication of an impending regression, as Maddux rebounded to become a significant driver of the Friars' September success. When Maddux took the mound, a quality start was nearly a guarantee, and once the offense improved, every Maddux start became a must-watch. If he is to continue this success in the twilight of his career in 09, the effectiveness of his breaking pitches will have to remain constant. His circle change was his most dominant pitch last season, and he resorted to it frequently on two-strike counts. Worryingly though, Baseball Prospectus has decreased his curveball rating from 4 down to 3 based on its efficiency last season as well as predicted age regression. If Maddux cannot use his curveball effectively, hitters will be able to expect and adjust to his circle change, which may carry devastating effects. However, this seems quite unlikely as Maddux has always kept hitters guessing throughout his career. With an improved offense in 2009, every Maddux start will be a must-watch and an assumed victory.
Projected Statistics: 15-7, 3.15 ERA, 145 K, 4.5 WAR

How the Padres Will Contend: Ranking Friars' Trades Since 2008
The Padres' current roster is much different than it was at the beginning of 2008, and fortunately, it is quite stronger. This is due to several impact moves made throughout the regular season, drastically restructuring an aging roster. Without this radical restructuring, the Padres would have likely finished far worse than their 81-81 record in 2008. Here is a ranking of each trade made by the Padres since the beginning of the '08 season:

1. Padres Acquire Cust, Denorfia for Edmonds
Image Image
The move seemed questionable from Oakland's perspective at the time and still remains a head-scratcher. The A's traded struggling but promising outfielders Jack Cust and Chris Denorfia in exchange for 36-year-old Jim Edmonds. While Edmonds fit the A's profile at a younger age, he was clearly regressing in 2008. Still, Oakland made a 3-for-1 swap that ultimately backfired. Jack Cust went on to slug 50 home runs in a Padres uniform, finally living up to his potential. While Denorfia was a downgrade defensively, he was stronger at the plate and on the basepaths than Edmonds, hitting multiple extra-base hits in crucial situations. Without this trade, it is quite plausible that the Padres would have won at least six fewer games, as Cust and Denorfia combined for 6 WAR. Lopsided moves like this one are what turns teams into contenders.

2. Padres Acquire Hughes for Clark
Image
While Tony Clark was a great pinch hitter, it seemed as if the final year of his career was being wasted on the bench. As such, the Padres sent him to the American League for Phil Hughes, a young but struggling pitcher. The Bronx Bombers lost patience with Hughes due to his 5+ ERA and were desperate to get rid of him. In San Diego, however, Hughes emerged as a reliable starter in the NL. He even threw multiple complete games, an unexpected development. The Yankees did not completely lose the trade as Oakland did since Tony Clark drove in a few key runs in their World Series run. Overall though, the Padres have a much stronger long term outlook in their rotation than they did prior to the trade, as Hughes may be able to become the #2 behind Jake Peavy once Greg Maddux departs.

3. Padres Acquire Kubel, Harris, Redmond for Giles, Gerut, Barrett
Image Image
This trade was heartbreaking for Friars fans who had grown to love Brian Giles in his Padres tenure. Prior to his devastating collarbone injury in June, Giles led the league in hits. However, as a 36-year-old with a significant injury, it made sense for the Padres to deal him. In return, they received Brendan Harris and Jason Kubel as the headliners, also adding Mike Redmond to come off the bench. Harris and Kubel were decent in 2008, but the signings of Orlando Hudson and Milton Bradley will now complicate their outlook and potential long term futures in San Diego. With Aaron Albion and Ricardo Alvarez also destined for the big leagues, these two could become the odd men out, to no fault of their own. Each will need a strong showing in the spring and in the early season to convince manager Bud Black to designate them as the everyday starter, but the competition may be too difficult to overcome.

4. Padres Acquire Shields for Hoffman
Image
The departure of Trevor Hoffman was heartbreaking to the vast majority of the fanbase, who were rightly concerned with James Shields's talent. Shields pitched just about 30 innings for the Pads before being entirely removed from the starting rotation. This was an indication that the trade was a failure, and it seemed as though the Padres would be stuck with Shields for the foreseeable future. Yet, when they shopped him over the Winter Meetings, they received considerable interest. Significantly, Cleveland was desperate to deal star catcher Victor Martinez in exchange for a young starting pitcher, and so the two teams were a perfect fit. Essentially, the Padres turned 41-year-old closer Trevor Hoffman into an all-star catcher who will bolster the middle of the lineup and provide much need run support to an excellent pitching staff. While the original trade may have not worked out, its consequences turned the Padres into potential contenders.

How the Padres Will Contend: 2009 NL West Predictions
As pitchers and catchers inch closer to reporting to camp, the rosters for each NL West team seem to be all but set. With that, we will examine each NL West roster and predict the final standings for 2009.

1. San Diego Padres 95-67
After an up-and-down season last year, the Padres dramatically improved their roster by adding several impactful free agents, Orlando Hudson and John Lackey the most noteworthy of the signings. Following these additions, the Padres added Victor Martinez, a star offensive catcher who will bolster their run production. While their 2008 roster was last in the league in runs scored, the current roster's 2008 stats would put them second in the division with 857 runs scored. Their current pitchers allowed 650 runs in 2008, giving them an astounding +207 run differential. This total would give them a Pythagorean expectation of a remarkable 102 wins, but we will subtract seven wins due to predicted age regression from a few star players like Greg Maddux. Still, the Padres are poised for a return to the postseason and all signs indicate they will be in the midst of the other National League contenders like New York and Milwaukee.
MVP: Adrian Gonzalez
Breakout: Michael Padgett
Bust: Kevin Kouzmanoff

2. San Francisco Giants 90-72
The Giants made several impactful signings and trades in the offseason as well, adding Shane Victorino and Rafael Furcal. These additions gave the Giants the highest projected run total this season at nearly 900. Their pitching is a strong suit as well, with Tim Lincecum coming off a breakout campaign in 2008. In addition to Lincecum, the Giants' rotation is anchored by veteran Barry Zito, who had a down year in 2008 but is working on improving his mechanics over the winter. Closer Kevin Correia emerged among the top-ten closers in the game last season based on saves, a needed presence in what was a struggling bullpen. At the plate, Ray Durham ranked 25th in OPS last season but is entering his age 38 season. If Durham, Winn, Rowand, and Victorino build off their 2008 seasons, the Giants may challenge the Padres for the best offense in the division. Although, the age of this roster is comparable to San Diego's at the beginning of last season, so it is quite possible for the team to fall off. Padres fans will hope for the latter outcome.
MVP: Tim Lincecum
Breakout: Brian Wilson
Bust: Bengie Molina

3. Colorado Rockies 85-77
If this were solely based on offense, the Rockies may have been projected to win the division thanks to their roster and environment. However, as was been historically the case, the Rockies have struggled to address their pitching situation. The current pitching staff allowed 815 runs last season with an ERA nearing 5. The team added Roy Halladay at the trade deadline in an attempt to solidify their rotation, and he did just that with a sub-3.50 ERA in 194 innings. Despite Halladay's success, the rest of the pitching staff failed to hold onto leads, and the Rockies missed the 2008 postseason after winning the NL Pennant the year before. They made no meaningful attempt to improve on the mound, and will instead rely on Halladay to carry them back to the playoffs. Their offense is star-studded, led by Todd Helton, Brad Hawpe, Garrett Atkins, and Troy Tulowitzki. These players will be enough to bring them to fringe contention, but the lack of pitching will sink them once again.
MVP: Todd Helton
Breakout: Troy Tulowitzki
Bust: Jason Michaels

4. Arizona Diamondbacks 81-81
This will seem to be a surprise for many as the Diamondbacks are coming off back-to-back division crowns, but the team lost a significant portion of their impactful hitters. Only 4 players in their current lineup played 162 games last season, while the remainder of the lineup was either injured or served backup roles. Like the Padres, the Diamondbacks attempted to get younger over the winter, handing the reins of the offense to 22-year-old outfielder Justin Upton. Despite the youth movement on offense, their ace is 46-year-old Randy Johnson, who will most likely not be able to throw 171 innings as he did last season. Johnson has been suffering discomfort in his arm and a velocity drop recently, signs pointing to an impending demise. Brandon Webb and Dan Haren will be able to fill a void if Johnson cannot pitch a full season, but the Diamondbacks do not currently have a capable young starter to step in and replace the Big Unit. As a result, the Diamondbacks will most likely take a step back in 2009, while still building toward an even more promising future.
MVP: Conor Jackson
Breakout: Justin Upton
Bust: Randy Johnson

5. Los Angeles Dodgers 80-82
The Los Angeles Dodgers had a disappointing season in 2008 after being tabbed by many to win the division due to the arrival of Joe Torre. Instead, the team struggled to find a rhythm despite solid overall numbers. Their current roster would have the fewest runs allowed in the division, fewer than even the Padres. Hiroki Kuroda, Chan Ho Park, and Francisco Liriano were excellent last seasons with ERAs hovering around 3.50. They were even solid offensively, led by James Loney, Jeff Kent, and Andruw Jones, who were each among the leaders in OPS in 2008. Despite these leaders, their lineup lacks depth, which cost them a chance at a postseason berth. They made no effort to fix this lack of depth over the winter, and so the same inconsistency that plagued them in 2008 will not be going away anytime soon. For the Dodgers to finally return to contention, several overlooked players will need to contribute heavily, and they will have to be aggressive in the midseason trade market.
MVP: Andruw Jones
Breakout: Matt Kemp
Bust: Nomar Garciaparra

2009 Spring Training Recap: Padres Finish .500...Again
There were both reasons for optimism and reasons for concern following the Padres' 2009 spring season. On the positive side, Jack Cust and Victor Martinez did not skip a beat following the 2008 season. On the negative side, the free-agent acquisitions had a difficult time adjusting to a new environment. Hudson and Bradley only had two combined hits, and John Lackey was worryingly rocked by the Cubs' powerful offense. Fortunately, it is only Spring Training, so each player will have an opportunity to settle in. The Padres' status was in no way affected by an inconsistent performance in February and March.

I think Milton Bradley has higher upside than Kubel as an all around player, and he’s a switch hitter. Kubel would be a good matchup as a bench guy hitting off of righties.

That's a good suggestion, and their stats are similar as well. We'll go with that.

April 2, 2009: Padres Drop Opener to Phillies as Matt Cain Throws Complete Game
After much anticipation, Opening Day 2009 has finally arrived, but it was quite the letdown for the Friar Faithful. Jake Peavy got into trouble early, giving up two home runs to Pat Burrell in his first two at-bats. After this though, Peavy found his rhythm, finishing the game with an 8-inning, 8 strikeout performance. Last September, this would be more than enough for a victory, but the Padres offense from April 2008 showed up today. Ricardo Alvarez and Kevin Kouzmanoff were the only batters with multiple hits, while Jack Cust and Victor Martinez went hitless. These were worrying signs, and the Padres may be in major trouble if they turn into trends. The Padres want to avoid the start they got off to last season, as repeating the same offensive woes may be devastating to the fanbase. They will hope to salvage a series win in the next two games.

April 9, 2009: Padres Make Statement by Sweeping Defending NL West Champions
A four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks granted the 2009 Padres to announce their status as contenders to the MLB world. They did just that without any hesitation, sweeping the defending division champions in dominant fashion. Last night, Jake Peavy threw a complete game shutout, and Greg Maddux followed that up tonight by allowing only 3 hits in 7.1 innings. Randy Johnson was an issue for Padres hitters last season, continuing that tonight with a complete game of his own. Yet, Johnson was handed the loss thanks to heroics from his former teammate Orlando Hudson, who was named player of the game in each of the last three games of the series. Hudson came through in the clutch with a pivotal 2-run single with two outs in the fifth. Hudson has been an enormous pickup so far, and if he continues to dominate opposing pitchers at the plate and on the basepaths, he may be in for an All-Star season. With the 2-0 win, the Pads improved to 6-2 on the year, good enough for the best record in a contested National League.

April 16, 2009: Two Series, Two Sweeps Against Diamondbacks
The Arizona Diamondbacks will be glad to have a break from facing the Padres, as they have lost all 8 games against the red-hot Friars. In an unbalanced schedule, the D-Backs faced each of the Padres' standout starting pitchers, failing to put up against each. John Lackey has proved to be one of the best signings of the season, striking out 10 and allowing only 3 runs through 7 innings today. On the offensive side, Orlando Hudson is proving to be the best signing of the season as well. Hudson leads the league in batting average and stolen bases. He has also delivered several clutch hits in the first 15 games, doing just that today with a go-ahead single in the fifth. Without the Hudson signing, the Padres' offense may have been the worst in the league with several impact players from 2008, like Gonzalez, Kouzmanoff, and Cust struggling so far. Through 15 games, the Friars have won 12, good enough for the best record in baseball. While many expected a major step-up from the team, they did not expect them to carry the best record in the National League. It's currently a great time to be a Friar faithful, and hopefully, that continues throughout the season.

Sheesh, that DBacks lineup looks awfully thin. No Eric Byrnes, Orlando Hudson, Chris Young, Mark Reynolds, Justin Upton...

I have no idea what they're doing, because three of the listed players (Byrnes, Reynolds, Upton) are still on the team. Probably a big reason why we stand at 12-3...

Mid-April 2009 Update: Padres Off To Best 15-Game Start Since 1998
The Padres are off to their best start in franchise history since...1998. In that season, the team reached the Fall Classic with a roster that consisted of a veteran Tony Gwynn, elite starter Kevin Brown, a 50 home run slugger in Greg Vaughn, and a young Trevor Hoffman. It has been a lean 11 seasons since, but hope has finally returned to San Diego. This time around, they are led by a starting rotation with elite numbers. Four!! starters have ERAs under 1, though this can be attributed to facing a putrid Arizona offense eight times. On offense, they are led by Orlando Hudson, who is currently having a Gwynn-esque season, leading the team in batting average and the league in stolen bases. They have been this good even with Adrian Gonzalez and Jack Cust struggling to find their strides, both hovering around the Mendoza line through 15 games. It remains to be seen whether the Padres' success has been legitimate since 8 of their wins have come against the struggling Arizona Diamondbacks. They face tougher opposition in the second half of the month, and if they remain successful, they will announce themselves to be legitimate contenders for the first time in 11 years.
