April 13, 2008: Peavy Shellacked, Pads Shutout Again

The greatest concern for the Padres this season has been an anemic offense, which was the victim of yet another shutout. Despite recording ten hits, the Padres failed to put a single runner in scoring position. Pair this with Jake Peavy's worst career performance, and the formula for a blowout is clear. The Padres have been lucky so far, but as the pitching begins to regress, horrific games like this one will become ever more frequent.

April 17, 2008- Padres Lose Thriller as Pitching Struggles Continue

As the offense finally showed signs of life, San Diego's pitching failed to match their production. The 8 runs were the highest scoring output of the young 2008 season, but San Diego's bullpen cost them a deserved win. There was a thrilling moment in the eighth, when Brian Giles smashed a game-tying 3-run home run, causing Petco Park to erupt in cheers. With the game now tied, it appeared as if the Padres were on the verge of a breakthrough victory. Yet, the defending NL champs struck right back in the 9th, taking the lead with a rally of bloop singles. The Padres failed to muster a rally in the ninth and were swept by the first-place Rockies.

April 23, 2008- Middle of the Order Rises to the Challenge, Padres Secure Clutch Victory

The San Diego Padres have hit a rough patch after a 6-6 start, losing 8 out of 9. However, they bounced back in their return to Petco, overcoming a 4-0 deficit to defeat the rival San Francisco Giants. The Padres trailed 4-1 in the 6th, but Adrian Gonzalez came through with his biggest hit of the season- a game-tying three-run homer, electrifying the Petco Park crowd. The Pads bullpen held it down like usual- with the trio of Hensley, Meredith, and Hoffman shutting the opponents down. In the 11th, Trevor Hoffman batted in order to preserve a tired bullpen, and he actually ripped a single into center. Giles followed with a base hit, and the runners eventually moved to second and third with two outs. This time, it was Khalil Greene's turn to play the hero, and he drove a walkoff single to center, granting the Padres just their second win in ten games. Hopefully they can carry the momentum and turn the young season around, much needed optimism following a brutal stretch.

April 30, 2008: End of a Rough Month

After some optimism following a 2-win stretch, the Padres fell to the Phillies, who have also been struggling to start the 2008 season. The Padres' successes have been attributed to a more patient approach, but they were unable to keep it up in this one. Eaton's pitch count was extremely low, and the Pads sputtered as a result. After trailing 4-1, Randy Wolf drilled a two-run double but was thrown out attempting to stretch in into a triple. He was also injured on the play, which caused the Padres to over-exert their bullpen. Philadelphia broke it open in the seventh, taking a 7-3 lead that they would not lose. With the loss, the Padres finished the month at 10-18, 6.5 games out of first. May will be a pivotal month.

Apirl 2008: End of Month Update
In the last update, the Padres stood at a promising 6-6, with a dominant pitching staff and bullpen. However, the signs were present that potential regression could kill them, and that followed suit for the rest of the month. The Padres went 4-12 the rest of the way, with both offensive and pitching struggles. Jake Peavy has been the major reason for the pitching regression, carrying an ERA nearly over 5. While Adrian Gonzalez, Brian Giles, and Scott Hairston have been strong on offense, the remaining hitters have been unable to be consistent enough. It remains to be seen whether the more patient approach at the plate will pay dividends, and each hitter will have to commit to it. Ultimately, it was a rough end to the month, clouding San Diego's immediate future. May will determine their status in the summer in terms of contention.

May 3, 2008: A-Gon, Peavy Deliver Performances of the Season

If you tuned into Saturday afternoon's game against the Marlins, you had a great afternoon. After scoring 9 runs Friday night, the Pads did the exact same thing today. This time, though, it was accomplished in style. Adrian Gonzalez hit home runs in three consecutive at-bats, driving in 5 runs in the process. Khalil Greene and Brian Giles each also added home runs of their own. More importantly, it was the breakthrough performance Jake Peavy was seeking. A home run by Dan Uggla in the first inning was the only hit allowed by Peavy, who retired every following batter. This is a contender for the game of the season so far, as it will be difficult to top the excitement.

May 10, 2008: Padres Roar Back to Take Second In a Row From Rockies
If the Padres would have fallen into a 3-0 hole about two weeks ago, it would have been a guaranteed defeat. Tonight was a different story, as the team stormed back from a 3-0 deficit to grab a crucial division victory. Jake Peavy was not as dominant as he was in his one-hitter last time around, but he was once again more like his usual self- throwing a quality start. For about six innings, it appeared as if the Padres were about to go scoreless again in 2008, but Tadahito Iguchi gave them life with an RBI single. They stranded runners for the remainder of the inning but stormed right back in the 8th. Scott Hairston was the hero of the night, driving in a clutch two-run double. Trevor Hoffman closed the game to continue his dominant season, and the Padres clinched a series win over the Pennant holders.

May 15, 2008: Padres Split Series With Cubs in Extra Inning Thriller
After two consecutive blown lead losses, the Padres earned a series split with the Cubs in dramatic fashion. Glendon Rusch continued his surprisingly efficient start to the season, throwing 6 innings of one-run ball. The game started off as a pitchers' duel, with Rusch and Zambrano tearing through their opponents' batting orders. This was broken in the 7th when Adrian Gonzalez crushed a solo home run over the bleachers in left. This lead would only be short-lived, as Derek Lee did the exact same thing in the next inning. The game remained scoreless until the 12th, when the Pads' revamped offense once again shined through. Khalil Greene drove a go-ahead two-run home run off Kerry Wood, and Jim Edmonds continued his 16-game hitting streak with a crucial insurance home run. Trevor Hoffman ran into a bit of trouble, putting the tying run on base, but he was able to navigate out of it like usual. The Padres would have liked to have won the series, but they will settle for a split.

May 2008: Bi-Monthly Update
So far, May has been much kinder to the Friars, as they are currently 8-6 in the month. This is largely a result of a rejuvenated offense, led by Adrian Gonzalez and his 1.000+ OPS. Jim Edmonds has also been a major driving factor, currently carrying a 16-game hitting streak. Khalil Greene has also been a major contributor despite a low batting average. His clutch home run in the last game was a perfect example of his season so far, as he was hitless until that moment. The pitching has been solidly consistent throughout the month, with Glendon Rusch being the standout. Somehow, Rusch carries stronger numbers than Jake Peavy, Chris Young, and Greg Maddux. One explanation is that teams are looking past Rusch in order to adjust to Peavy, Maddux, and Young- which would point to the effectiveness of the 6-man rotation strategy. San Diego's bullpen has also been one of the best in the business, as no reliever carries an ERA over 4. A dependable bullpen has prevented the Padres from blowing late leads, which they have only done twice over the course of the month. While their record stands at 18-24 (6.5 out of first), the signs are there for a potential turnaround.

May 25, 2008: Padres Finally End Miserable 8-Game Losing Streak
At long last, the most miserable stretch of Padres baseball since 2004 finally concluded thanks to Scott Hairston's walk-off heroics. Heading into Sunday's finale against the Reds, the Padres had lost 8 straight games- two against Seattle, three against St. Louis, and the first three against the Reds. The Padres set out to make sure that the losing streak did not reach double digits, and they were able to accomplish that. Randy Wolf had an excellent start, throwing 8 innings of one-hit ball. His only mistake was a hanging changeup to Adam Dunn, who has completely terrorized the Padres this weekend. It was looking as if the Padres would suffer another loss in the late innings, but Khalil Greene drove a triple into the right-center gap in the ninth. Following Greene was Scott Hairston, who came through in the clutch to deliver a walk-off single, putting the nightmare to an end. The season may be a lost cause at this point, but at least the team was able to celebrate a small victory again. The return of Brian Giles may help set the team back on track, but it may be far too late to return to contending status.

May 31, 2008: Padres End Hectic Month on 4-Game Winning Streak
A month that consisted of an 8-game losing streak finally came to a close in yet another extra-inning victory for San Diego. Greg Maddux shined once again, showing that age may just be a number with a 7.1 IP, 2 ER outing. Adrian Gonzalez was officially named player of the month for May, and he backed his reputation with a 2-run home run. The Padres could not hold the 2-0 lead he gave them, and it took until the 11th to get it back. This time, Josh Bard played the hero, driving in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly. Trevor Hoffman shut the door in the eleventh, and the Padres secured their fourth straight victory. It was a strong end to what was a horrific month, and it appears that Brian Giles's return has brought the Padres back to their pre-losing streak level.

May 2008: Monthly Recap
Although the team suffered through an 8-game losing streak in the month, May was somehow kinder to the Pads than April was. In April, the team stood at 10-18, while the team went 14-15 through May. In April, the team was consistently poor, struggling daily at the plate. In May, however, the team showed signs of rejuvenation. If Brian Giles had not suffered an injury, the team may have finished over .500 in the month, as they did not win a single game with Giles absent from the lineup. There was a bit of an offensive resurgence, as the team posted a +12 monthly run differential, mostly due to some dominant performances against Florida and Chicago. Adrian Gonzalez is making the case for NL MVP, hitting a remarkable .402 with 16 HR. Tadahito Iguchi has also made a 180-turn since April, as he now carries an average around .300. With one more consistently solid performer, San Diego may be able to hover closer to the .500 mark, but with an aging roster, will that be sufficient for the front office? Or will they prefer a drastic rebuild instead? June will serve as a sort of ultimatum month for the Padres, and the ultimatum seems to be that if they are more than 5 games out of first, they will decide to sell at the deadline. Additionally, the MLB Amateur Draft is quickly approaching, and the scouting department has been working around the clock to find replacements for aging players at several key positions. Whatever the case may be, June 2008 will be a pivotal month for the Padres.

Yeah I've always had trouble getting K's in this game. Maddux is the exception because of his LVL 5 circle change.

2008 MLB Draft: New Horizons for the Padres
Image
Despite a horrific 26-39 start to the season, Padres fans could finally feel optimistic toward the future with the 2008 draft class. Although the Padres held the 23rd pick, draft experts have praised their selections. The draft was weaker than usual on the offensive side, so the Padres focused heavily on pitching. With their first selection, they chose Humberto Jeroloman. Jeroloman is a bit of a project, as he comes with significant control and speed issues. This was not a big hit, as teams would like to have more of a certainty in the first round. However, their second selection is much more promising. With the 46th pick, the Pads selected Andrew Weibl. Like Jeroloman, Weibl is not a power pitcher whatsoever, but his control and breaking pitches are far stronger. Ultimately, Weibl may appear to be a better selection, and a great value pick for his position. As for late-round picks and signings, the Padres added Michael Padgett- who could turn out to be the most impactful player in this class. He has similar control to Weibl, with the additional benefit of 88 mph top speed. On the offensive side, the team added Ricardo Alvarez and Aaron Albion- two hitters who can provide much-needed contact to an anemic, aging offense. With these additions, Jim Edmonds and Tadahito Iguchi may be placed on the trading block. Lastly, the team added Jeremiah Borland, who is also a finesse pitcher. With Greg Maddux still in the mix, there is a chance for him to mentor several young finesse pitchers. Overall, while the Padres could have done better in the first round, their late-round picks may be enough to cover for it.
