March 2008:

After suffering a heartbreaking loss in Game 163 against the Colorado Rockies, the San Diego Padres will hope to avenge their defeat and return to the postseason in 2008. Since their rotation is strong, anchored by Jake Peavy, Chris Young, and the legendary Greg Maddux, the Padres will pose a threat to opposing hitters. Trevor Hoffman and Heath Bell are also a formidable back-end duo, with Cla Meredith and Clay Hensley providing them support. While the pitching staff appears to be poised for a top-5 finish, there are some question marks at the plate. While 26-year-old Adrian Gonzalez appears to be developing as a strong middle-of-the-lineup anchor, there is not a strong youth presence in the lineup. Gonzalez is the youngest hitter, and three batters (Iguchi, Giles, and Kouzmanoff) are over the age of 34. While experience helps, there is a strong potential for regression-which could prevent the Friars from contention. Due to this, the top priority of the San Diego Front Office will be the acquisition of younger hitters- through trade, the draft, and the international FA market. Hopefully, the implementation of the younger talent will turn the Friars into a sustained contender.

Rules:
1. The owner has imposed a payroll limit of $90,000,000-which is only around $7,000,000 above the current mark.
1a. Bonuses may be awarded based on season success.
2. Trades can only be 4/5-stars.
2a. Max of 5 trades per season (could be lowered once the roster gets younger and the payroll is lowered).
3. Max of 4 FA signings (2 impact players, 2 role player)- also subject to change as the roster gets younger.
4. A majority of games will be played- but I'll only recap a certain amount. I'll also post some non-recap games in the discord.
5. Agents, trade advisors, assistant GMs welcome!
6. Accepting success players to be "scouted" into the farm system- development/ETA will be between 1-3 years.
6a. If you submit a success player to the roster, you automatically become his agent.
7. Training will be set on auto for the time being.

Jag123jg- Adrian Gonzalez, Greg Maddux
PP27- Jake Peavy, Khalil Greene
AgentP- Mark Prior, Callix Crabbe

2008 San Diego Padres Pitching Stats:

Starting Pitchers:

Takeaways:
Although many pitchers carry experience and strong breaking pitches, age and red abilities are massive concerns. Mark Prior has had his fair share of injuries throughout the years and did not pitch in 2007. He is still fairly young, but this could be his final opportunity in the major. To mitigate this, the Padres will use a 6-man rotation in order to keep their starters fresh. Glendon Rusch will be called to fill this role, but it is uncertain how long this experiment will fare. The success of the rotation will depend on consistency from the back-end.

Takeaways:
While a lot of teams have poor bullpens in 2008, the Padres may be an exception. Since they are an NL team, their bullpen is quite then- especially since they are working with a 6-man rotation. The pen's success could depend on Cla Meredith and Clay Hensley- who both have the potential to be solid options in the middle innings. With inning-limits in play for a few starters, it is crucial for them to step up. Heath Bell is a passable set-up man, although his issues with RISP may complicate certain relief situations. Trevor Hoffman is entering his age-41 season, so it will be unclear how many innings he will be able to throw-and his efficiency in those innings may be questionable at best. A team can never have too many relievers, so the Padres may be looking to make additions as the season progresses.
Grade: C

2008 San Diego Padres Hitting Stats:

Takeaways:
There are a lot of interesting scenarios for the 2008 Padres offense. On one hand, 4 players have B-ratings in either contact or power. However, many hitters have flaws that may mask their positive stats. As an example, Khalil Greene's contact rating is an E despite a B power-rating, meaning he will often sell out for power. Speed is also a concern, as no players have ratings above a D. While the Padres are committed to a Moneyball-style of play in terms of base-stealing, the lack of speed will prevent them from gaining extra bases. PETCO Park is also a pitcher's paradise, which will be a significant disadvantage-especially when most of the division plays in hitter-friendly parks. Since many players are over the age of 30, there is little potential for breakout seasons. Therefore, it may be a rough year for the Friars at the plate, which will definitely set them back in the division race.

March 31, 2008: Jose Cruz Sends Pads Home In Embarassing Fashion
Image

The San Diego Padres lost in ugly fashion, scoring just one run in 17 innings. Jake Peavy allowed only one run in nine innings, but his offensive support was non-existent. Somehow, he was out-dueled by Roy Oswalt, who managed to pitch into extra innings. The Pads bullpen was strong until Trevor Hoffman allowed a 17th-inning to Jose Cruz Jr. The Padres will hope to avoid similar embarrassment next time, but it could be a long road ahead in San Diego.

Greg Maddux was the only Padre to record a stolen base in July of 2008.

April 3, 2008: Power Surge Grants Pads First Win

After a brutal stretch of three extra-inning losses, the Padres' bats finally rose to the challenge. Three-consecutive home runs from Gonzalez, Greene, and Kouzmanoff provided a much-needed spark for a fanbase with poor morale. Randy Wolf's quality start was the fourth in a row from the highly-praised Pads rotation. A 1-3 start is less than ideal, but the power surge granted much-needed optimism.

April 5, 2008: Padres Win Third Straight Thanks to Clark's Pinch-Hit Heroics

It was looking like another anemic offensive performance from the Pads, as they hung Glendon Rusch out to dry for the first seven innings. Yet, when the game appeared to be lost, Tony Clark crushed a pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning, tying the game at 1. The Pads put a runner at second with two outs, and Adrian Gonazlez played the hero- driving a single into the gap to take a 2-1 lead. Trevor Hoffman closed the deal with a quick 1-2-3 inning, and San Diego improved to 3-3 with their third consecutive victory.

April 8, 2008: Great Performance from Maddux Wasted in the First Walk-Off Loss of the Season

The Pads once again let their starting pitcher down, as the team only provided one run of support to Greg Maddux- who struck out ten in seven innings. They took a 1-0 lead in the middle innings but lost it as soon as they got it. Tim Lincecum proved too difficult for a struggling lineup, pitching all nine innings and only allowing one run. Momentum nearly swung in the Padres' favor, as Cla Meredith worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the eighth. However, the Pads attempted to use him for multiple innings, which backfired as he allowed the first batter of the ninth to come around and score on a grounder to first, granting the Giants an ugly victory. The Pads fell to an aggravating 4-5, which will only get worse if the offense remains anemic while the pitching staff inevitably regresses to the mean.

April 2008: Bi-Monthly Update- The State of the Friars
It's been quite an odd start for the Padres, who find themselves at .500 through the first 12 games of the season. If you looked solely at their pitching stats, you would assume them to be one of the best teams in the league, but their record says otherwise. This is a result of their poor slugging on offense. Although their team average is a respectable .254, several players carry pitiful slugging percentages, which has led to a poor record with runners in scoring position. This has resulted in a lot of frustrating failures on offense that has definitely affected the perception of the team thus far. The team restructured their lineup, which will hopefully provide a boost heading forward. Here are the numbers:

Pitching Stats:

Mark Prior- 1-0, 1.69 ERA, 1 SHO, 1 CG
Clay Hensley- 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 8.1 IP, 12 K

Who's Not?
Tadahito Iguchi- .167, 0 HR, 0 RBI, .188 SLG
