July 2010 Recap: Padres' Goal for the Rest of 2010 is to Stay Sharp
The Padres are well on their way to a second-straight NL West title as they lead by 20 games. With such a large cushion, the Padres do not need to worry about a lengthy division battle, which was very much in question during April. However, the Friars cannot afford to coast down the stretch. Even last season, the Padres stayed sharp by out-pacing the red-hot Mets. This time though, the Padres do not have many challengers in the National League. The Mets, barring another 2009-like surge, are not going to pose a threat for home-field advantage throughout the National League playoffs. The Yankees and Angels, both in the American League, could very well be the biggest threats, but interleague play is finished until October. To avoid a repeat of 2009, the Padres must be able to remain focused for the entirety of the next three months or so.

August 15, 2010: Padres Win in Come-From-Behind Thriller
The Padres have not lost many series in 2010, but they came close against the playoff-contending Astros. Early in the game, Hunter Pence drove in the first run of the game with a solo home-run off Francisco Jaramillo. Luckily, Jaramillo showed his resilience and did not allow a single run until the 8th. Orlando Hudson helped out his pitcher with a game-tying single in the next inning. After this, the game was locked into a stalemate until the 8th inning, where Jaramillo ran into trouble. Bill Speedman relieved him and faced runners at the corners. Speedman recorded an out but allowed a go-ahead RBI single to Carlos Lee. However, the Padres refused to give in throughout the game, and Jack Cust drove a key 2-run triple to give his team the lead. Following Cust's heroism, Joba Chamberlain made quick work of the Astros, giving San Diego the series win.

Mid-August 2010 Recap: Padres Have a Magic Number
The Padres currently sport a magic number of 16 before summer has even ended. If they continue their current pace, they could plan champagne celebrations before the end of the month. Currently, they have dropped just one game in August- but it was against a playoff contender in the Houston Astros. The Astros nearly won the series against San Diego had it not been for Jack Cust's late-game heroics. This raises the question of whether the Padres are benefitting from inferior competition. There may be some truth to this worry as at the beginning of the season, the Padres struggled against teams like the Cubs, Giants, and Mets, but then surged after playing weaker teams in the NL West. Still though, they can only play the teams that are listed on their schedule, and they are certainly among the greatest regular season teams in league history. The question now is if they can finish the job in October.

September 2, 2010: Padres Win Second-Straight NL West!
Image
It was a formality for months, but the Padres have now won the NL West for the second straight season. Ironically, they did so by defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks, a team that also won consecutive division crowns in 2007/08. Adrian Gonzalez was the hero of the night with 3 runs batted in and a solo home-run, and Brandon Webb shut down his former team by allowing just two earned runs in seven innings. Following the theme of former Diamondbacks defeating their former team, Orlando Hudson recorded the final out and began the well-deserved celebration. With September call-ups in place, the division champs will fight to stay fresh for the postseason, as well as to potentially set the league record for wins in a regular season. The team is well-aware of the stigma that comes with winning a record number of games, but they are focused on the tasks at hand. Last season's heartbreaking end should be just enough motivation to avoid complacency, and the team and fanbase are roaring for redemption.

August 2010 Recap: Padres Reach the Century Mark, Win the Division
Last night, the San Diego Padres clinched their second-consecutive division title. Despite this, Bud Black emphasized that the team's success is not finished, and the goal will now be to remain sharp and healthy for October. Remaining sharp will require each starter to continue his regular workload, but some younger players may be given a chance late in games. Additionally, while Friars fans wait for October, they can turn their attention to award races. John Lackey appears to be in line for the Cy Young, although a late surge from teammate Jake Peavy could make the voting closer. Many believe Jack Cust should be the Most Valuable Player, but Albert Pujols's quest for a .400 batting average may overshadow Cust's third-straight tremendous season. Lastly, the closest award race may be between Jason Blackburn and Francisco Jaramillo, two of the best rookies in recent memory. Blackburn may have an edge due to performances this summer, but Jaramillo should not be ashamed if he does not win the award. Padres fans' patience may be tested this month, but the postseason is on the way.

September 15, 2010: Diamondbacks Continue to Put Up Fight Against Padres
In 13 games against each other this season, the Diamondbacks have the upper hand over the Padres. With today's win, Arizona is now 7-6 against their division rivals- no small feat given San Diego's potentially record-setting win total. Today, San Diego got off to a 2-0 lead, bolstered by an Orlando Hudson home run, but this lead was not to last. Brandon Webb, a former Diamondback like Hudson, pitched well, but he did not receive enough offensive support. Instead, Conor Jackson was the hero for Arizona with an RBI single in the 7th. San Diego put a runner on second in the ninth on a Jack Cust double, but they could not drive him home. Although San Diego has not been as dominant this month, it is yet to be a long-term concern. The win means more for Arizona, who is now in a better spot for the Wild Card hunt.

Mid-September 2010 Update: Padres Stuck in the Mud
The Padres, after clinching the NL West, have faltered a bit in September. Currently, they are on pace to lose the most games of any month since April- where they lost 11. The Padres may be coasting through a bit, and the offense has not performed to their usual standard. Their run differential this month is just +11, which is way worse than any other month this season. They have not played many new players or prospects, so their struggles have likely come down to some regression among their star players. Many worried the team would coast once they clinched the division + top seed in the NL, but the team still has the best record in MLB history to seek. If they win 11 of their next 15, they will finish with the most wins in MLB history, but that may be a major ask given their current form. Still, they will be the betting favorite in October.

October 1, 2010: Padres Miss Record
Heading into tonight's game, the Padres were just one win away from the record for the most wins in an MLB regular season. Instead, they fell 4-2 and finished at 116-46, tied with the 2001 Seattle Mariners. It was looking positive for the Padres early as Victor Martinez and Kevin Kouzmanoff each hit solo home runs to give the team a 2-0 lead. But cracks began to show, and the Giants tied the game in the sixth. Zach Duke has struggled with allowing hits recently, and it caught up to him in this game. In the 8th, Randy Winn delivered the decisive single against Rudy Seanez off a line drive to right. The Padres threatened in both the 8th and the 9th, but they failed to strike back with a decisive hit of their own. As a result, they closed the 2010 season with a record of 116-46- which is insane to be a disappointment. Now, they must avoid the same fate as the 2001 Mariners.

2010 Season Recap: Greatest Season in Padres History
In short, the 2010 regular season was unforgettable for the San Diego Padres. After a slowish start in April in which the team trailed the San Francisco Giants, the team lost just 34 games. This was largely due to an incredible pitching staff in which not a single pitcher finished with an ERA over 3.50. Three pitchers- Jake Peavy, John Lackey, and Brandon Webb each threw over 200 innings, with Francisco Jaramillo and Zach Duke approaching the number as well. The most remarkable factoid may have been the number of shutouts among the pitching staff- 19. Jake Peavy's 7 shutouts were the most in MLB history since Tim Belcher in 1989, and yet he is still likely to finish behind John Lackey in the Cy Young race. The pitching staff was not the only dominant performer, as the offense excelled as well. 5 players surpassed the 40 home-run mark, while the three other hitters each surpassed the 20 homer mark. This was good enough for 318 home runs, shattering the previous record of 264. It is safe to say the Padres were one of the most exciting regular season teams in MLB history. Almost every game was filled with intrigue, even when the division was secured. Now, they turn their eyes to the Houston Astros in the NLDS. The Astros won about 30 fewer games than the Padres in the regular season, but anything can happen in the postseason.

2010 NLDS Preview: Last Two Pennant Winners Meet

Pitching Comparison
Image Image
Image Image
Image Image
Image Image
Image Image

Out of all the categories, the Astros and Padres are closest to even in pitching. In fact, the Astros struck out more batters than the Padres in the regular season, although they gave up more runs. Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt, and Brandon Backe have each given San Diego problems in the past- and Houston expects each of these starters to pitch the first three games. Even so, they hardly come close to the trio of Jake Peavy, John Lackey, and Brandon Webb- a trio that could singlehandedly sweep a team in a series. Houston's bullpen is also solid, but they do not have the reliable arms that San Diego has, and have rotated closers all season. For these reasons, San Diego is likely to out-pitch the 'Stros.
Advantage: Padres

Batting Comparison:
Image Image
Image Image
Image Image
Image Image

While the Astros have had a strong offensive season led by Lance Berkman, Carlos Lee, and Hunter Pence, it pales in comparison to the Padres and their 318 homers. Also, the Astros had just one hitter surpass the .300 mark, while the Padres had three. The main difference is in on-base percentage, where the Astros put way more runners on base. The Padres are quite homer-reliant, so if the Astros can keep the ball in the park, they can limit remain competitive. The bottom of the order could be Houston's Achilles' Heel, as Geoff Blum and Darrin Erstad are solid but not as good as Kevin Kouzmanoff or Jason Blackburn. Ultimately, the series may come down to who can hit the most home runs, and so the likely pick would be San Diego.
Advantage: Padres

Series Prediction: Padres over Astros in 4.

2010 NLDS Game 1: A Complete Rout
The Padres shocked the baseball world with one of the most emphatic blowouts in recent playoff history. Jake Peavy took the mound, which meant the Padres were favored, but the way in which they won was shocking. Early on, Jack Cust drove a 3-run home run to deep center. Then, he hit a 2-run homer to almost the same spot. Cust was a playoff hero in 2009, and he looks to be continuing that this time. Later in the same inning, Khalil Greene hit another home run, meaning Cliff Lee gave up six earned runs in just three innings. 6 runs were more than enough for Jake Peavy, who allowed just 4 hits in 7.2 innings pitched. To secure the rout in the sixth, Curtis Granderson crushed a 3-run blast to right, making it 9-0. Viewership dropped sharply at this point, and it looks like a recovery from Houston is unlikely. They will need to somehow beat John Lackey to even the series.

2010 NLDS Game 2: Padres a Win Away From the NLCS
With an exhilarating win against Houston, the Padres are now just one victory away from their second-straight NLCS. Houston took their first lead of the game via a second-inning RBI from Darrin Erstad, which was a surprise against John Lackey. Despite the early issues, Lackey settled in and only allowed one more run for the rest of the game. In the fourth, Curtis Granderson crushed a drive to right to tie the game, resulting in a roar from the Petco crowd. Then, in the 5th, Orlando Hudson drove in the go-ahead run. Following this, Victor Martinez brought home the eventual game-winning run with an RBI single in the 7th. The biggest moment of the night, however, came when Daniel Cebidae relieved a worn-out Lackey in the 8th. Cebidae inherited runners at second and third and allowed a go-ahead single to Jason Kendall. After this, he induced a major double-play against Carlos Lee, which caused one of the most incredible fan reactions from the Friar faithful. With this, Houston lost faith, and Joba Chamberlain recorded an easy save for the win.

2010 NLDS Game 3: Padres Set for a Rematch
The San Diego Padres are headed to their second consecutive NLCS appearance via a remarkable win against Houston. It looked grim early as Carlos Lee hit a solo shot in the second, but Jack Cust immediately tied the game with yet another home run. Then, Curtis Granderson added more heroics in the third with an RBI single, which turned out to be the winning run. Khalil Greene also added a run of his own. Cust, Granderson, and Greene have each been pivotal performers in this postseason so far, and they showed it tonight. However, the biggest moment came from Brandon Webb, who allowed only one hit and zero base-runners on the night. He also struck out 6, but induced weak contact often. The final nail was put in the Astros' coffin via a three-run homer from Jack Cust in the eighth, and the Padres celebrated a sweep where they outscored their opponents 18-3. They will once again face the Mets in the NLCS.

2010 NLCS Preview: A Rematch

Pitching Comparison:
Image Image
Image Image
Image Image
Image Image
Image Image

This series is going to be categorized in the battle between aces Johan Santana and Jake Peavy, each of whom will try to out-pitch the other. Santana will likely finish top-5 in the Cy Young race behind the other Padres pitchers, and he even rivaled Peavy and Lackey's shutout numbers. Further, he has pitched well historically against San Diego, coming close to a perfect game on one occasion. Justin Verlander can also be dangerous, although he has struggled in the last two seasons. Despite these challenges, it can hardly be said they are better than one of the best pitching rotations in league history, especially if Brandon Webb continues his current tear. Zach Duke is also fully rested and has pitched well against New York historically, so the Mets face a larger hill to climb.
Advantage: Padres

Batting Comparison:
Image Image
Image Image
Image Image
Image Image

If there is one challenger to the Padres' offensive power, it is the New York Mets. While the Padres broke the single-season record for home runs by a team, the Mets were also a powerful hitting offense. They had three hitters- Carlos Delgado, Adam Dunn, and Carlos Beltran, surpass the 30 home run mark. They also have plenty of speed with Luis Castillo, who hit a remarkable 22 triples in the regular season. If one team that is remaining in the field can break through Padres pitching, it is the Mets. Their worst qualified hitter was Endy Chavez, and he still would have been a solid starter on other contending teams. While they did not match San Diego's home run numbers, they outscored them by over 200 runs, which suggests they are better at putting runners on base. The category is close, but it ultimately goes to San Diego by a slim margin.
Advantage: Padres

Series Prediction: Padres over Mets in 6.
