Kazmir once again did not disappoint. Crawford opened up the Rays' offense for 2017 with a solo home run in the 3rd inning. He and Gemoll eventually paired up to score the game-winning-run in the 9th inning.

Lowry threw a CG beating the Rays, 3-2. He wasn't the only former-Ray that has success in this game, Carlos Pena smacked a 2-run home run in the 4th inning to start of the scoring for either team; it eventually became the game-winning-run for the Blue Jays.

.440 BA for Day, sheesh. Rest of the lineup is off to a bit of a slow start, though.

The Rays fell to the Mariners, 5-4. The Rays were almost able to tie the game in the 9th inning but came up 1 short. Their pitching has been fine (Bruney being an outlier), but their team combined BA is .251 and the team combined HR is 31 - both 2nd worst in the MLB.

After the game Brian Bruney was sent down to AAA and Mardo Esquivel (2nd round pick from 2015) will be called up to the majors as a relief role. (96 MPH, D control, C stamina, 3-lvl cutter and slider)

Jaramillo wasn't extremely efficient with the pitch count but managed to pitch well considered only 2 runs (0 ER) were given up under his watch. Crawford and Upton's home-runs weren't enough support in this one. Esquivel eventually surrendered back-to-back hits from Cabrera and Granderson to allow the winning run to score.

Okumura and Iwamura. Nice

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a guy walk 4 batters in a watch game before, haha

Even though the final score was big, 8-2, don't let it fool you that this was a blow out from the beginning. The Rays exploded in the 9th scoring 5 runs. Pretty much all the Rays players stuffed the stat sheet. And Carlos Pena continued to pound his former team by hitting another HR.

The draft takes place today, but before any picks were made the Rays released Raul Ibanez to make room on the payroll.
The Rays had the last pick in each round:

1st round, 30th overall: Brody Guance - SP/RP
2nd round 60th overall: Sammy Camacaro - 3B

Guance might find his spot in a pitching order later on in his career, but for now he'll toil in the minors for assessment.
Even though the Rays have nice depth at the corner infield positions and DH, Camacaro could be a possible backup to those if any moves are made over the next few months.

Verlander arguably had a top-5 career performance against the Nationals. Going the distance with 15 K and 1 ER. His ERA at the start of the game was 5.05 and dropped to 4.54. So this game could just be an outlier as his peripheral stats might indicate him staying around this ERA. Either way he's contributed to the Rays heating up recently as they are almost on par with the 1st place Yankees.

Kazmir really had to work in this game as he had a career high 13 hits allowe; surprisingly only allowed 3 runs in total as Kazmir's counterpart, Jason Hirsh was more in control of the hits but allowed twice as many runs. Day and Conti were able to deliver most of the damage and the Rays are still 1 GB of 1st place in the AL East.

The Rays have completed their first trade of the 2017 regular season, this time they negotiated with the Mets (37-44):

Ryan Church - 1y/530
Matt Garza - 3y/780

and the Mets will be receiving
Justin Upton - 1y/1270
Mardo Esquivel - 1y/400

Church (38 y/o) has been excellent with the bat so far but lacks run speed and fielding range. The Rays will have to find a batting order spot for him even if he plays out of position in LF. Garza also makes his return to the Rays and should take hold of the long relief role for now.
Upton may have found a long term home if the Mets are able to resign him after this year and Esquivel also has a chance for a more stable spot, he was the Rays' 2nd round pick in 2015.

I like how you imposed all these restrictions on yourself and you're still terrorizing the league. How many WS wins is that now?

6 through 9 full seasons so far. I was hoping to have maybe like 1 or 2 WS wins when I first started this. I mean I could've saved/loaded to lose more of them but I don't think I would've liked knowing that afterwards.

Scherzer almost went the distance but instead was pulled in the 9th after allowing 2 runs. The Rays were up a comfy 6-0 going into the 9th but settled with a 6-2 win. Some of the reserves took over for the starters in this matchup.
