Chapter 1 : The Massacre is Over
"I hate my job," said a very sleepy Anthony S. Wright.
Anthony Wright was the assistant GM to the most unfavorite GM ever, John Rodriguez. He had traded many of the key players that made Anthony Wright want to come to the Giants in the first place. The Giants in 2008 went 78-83. The year after, Rodriguez traded away many of the players that led them to win 78 games. Examples are Aaron Rowand, Barry Zito, Ray Durham, Tim Lincecum, Omar Vizquel, and Rich Aurilla. These are among the many traded away. This led the Giants to lose 100 games in 2009. The team focused on getting prospects, but many were not great. For example, first rounder Barry Reynolds has not played a game yet and batted .230 in the minors, first rounder in 2009 Cody Mills fielded a 4.62 ERA, and last year's first rounder Don Enochs fielded a 5.45 ERA. The team also had to pick up unsigned draftees and the team fielded a very, very young team in 2010. They had a 64-98 standing that year though. They did win two more games. This year the Giants ended up dropping Matt Cain and let him go to FA with some relievers.
Anthony Wright slowly went to work since John Rodriguez told him to meet him. He didn't like him as he thought of players almost as indentured servents and would ussually always lowball at league minimum or no deal at all. Wright believed that players should get paid what they deserve and not just league minimum. He was different as he almost acted like a second bench coach to Theodore Grimes. After Rodriguez fired Bochy over his salary, Theodore Grimes, a former D1 college player, took his place for a very low rate. This lost him many of the players that they had making them field the youngest team last year. He slowly pulled him into the parking lot. And walked him into John's office.
"Hello Anthony," said John Rodriguez
"Hello Mr. Rodriguez," said Anthony, "Why did you call this meeting?"
"Well, I'm retiring. The owner and I have talked about it and you are the new GM! Congratulations!" said John.
"Thanks," said Anthony, "Why are you so happy?"
"Well, I hate this job, too many players and their dumb emotions. Plus I can't get to the Owner's goal," said John.
"What goal?" asked Anthony.
"Well, he is going to move the team if the Giants don't get to 90 wins or a postseason game," said John.
"What?!?" yelled Anthony.
"Well, good luck," said John as he left the office.
"Well, I have to win this year," said Anthony.
And with that, Anthony went for atleast a postseason game. He didn't tell the players. He only told Micheal Grimes who Anthony had become a good friend of. He was also not able to make any more chances at the players the Giants would lose in contract negotiations, but he was pretty confident. So was Micheal Grimes about this team.
