Pirates Magic Number Down to 3 As Pirates Compile 8th straight win

September 19 -- It's a story of a team going into complete different directions, with this win the Pirates have a magic number of 3 while the Cardinals have lost 86 games this season. The Pirates scored in the first inning with an RBI double by Jeff Clement, they got a run in the 5th by a homerun by Mike Fontenot and then an 8th inning run by an Ikari double made it 3-0 going into the 9th inning as former Cardinal Kyle Lohse went 6 1/3 innings of shutout ball. The Cardinals scored once in the 9th inning on a homerun by Greene who has had a terrible season hitting .203 with 5 homeruns, it was off of Street but he did what he normally did and rebounded from a run to get his 45th save to complete a 3 game sweep of the Cardinals and make it an 8-game winning streak.

Pirates A Win Or Cub's Loss Away From Division Title
September 23 -- Despite their 9-game winning streak snapped by the Dodgers, the Pirates are a win or a Cub's loss away from clinch their second consecutive National League Central title as their magic number is down to one. So far the Athletics and Marlins have already clinched their divisions while the Red Sox join the Pirates as teams with a magic number of 1. But in other places there is still spots available. The NL Central wild card lead is tied between the Giants and Cubs with the Rockies with a small chance while the Giants are only 3 games behind the Dodgers for the NL West lead. In the American League the Central is the biggest fight with the White Sox only 2 games behind the Twins for the AL Central lead but the loser of the division will likely be the wild card unless the Blue Jays and Rays can come back from a 5-game deficit to the AL Wild card leading White Sox.

If the 2012 season was to end today, these would be the ALDS and NLDS matchups

(AL WC) Chicago White Sox Vs Oakland Athletics (AL West)

(AL Central) Minnesota Twins Vs Boston Red Sox (AL East)

(NL West) Los Angeles Dodgers Vs Pittsburgh Pirates (NL Central)

(NL WC) Chicago Cubs/San Fransisco Giants Vs Florida Marlins (NL East)

Pirates Back In the Playoffs - Repeat As NL Central Champions

September 24 -- The Pirates are in the postseason for the 3rd straight year as they clinch tonight at Dodger's stadium to win the NL Central as the Pirates go for their quest of their 6th world series pennant in franchise history. The Dodgers scored first in the 5th inning by a Pierre single but the Pirates scored 4 runs in the 6th inning on a sacrifice fly by Jayson Werth and a 2-run homerun by Garrett Jones, his 43rd of the year. Andrew Ethier would homer in the 7th inning to make it 3-2 but the Dodgers would never recover as Matt Kemp popped up to catcher Jeff Clement to end the game and clinch the NL Central crown for 2012.

Pirates September In Review

After starting off roughly, the Pirates kicked it into full gear to at one point win 9 straight games and it allowed them to lock up the NL Central early this year as the closest team was the Cubs who were 9 games behind. In the end the Pirates ended up going 17-11 despite their second worst offensive month but guys like Jayson Werth and Garrett Jones still lit a fire in their offense that could turn into postseason success. There were some September call-ups this year, Jeff Salazar hit two pinch hit homeruns in 7 at bats, in 4 at bats Ruggiano was 3-4 with a homerun and Ross Glanville pitched 11 innings giving up just two runs. As far as this year has gone in the Central, a lot went as expected such as the Astros being terrible and the Pirates winning it but the Cub's success, the Reds best record since this log began(2008) and the Cardinals complete 360 of previous years were all very big surprises but the Cardinals blown up season may rank as the highest disappointment of the 2012 season.

2012 Postseason Preview
This postseason will have a few firsts. First of all the Marlin's have won their first ever NL East title and it's the first time in this log that the Mets will not make the playoffs, other firsts in the log include the Twin's and Cub's first postseason trips. The Pirates and Marlins are tied with the best record in the NL but the Marlins will face the Cubs who managed to win a wild card spot over the Giants. In the AL, the Athletics have the top seed and they will face the wild card winning Twins who fell to the White Sox on the final day to only win the Wild Card. It will be a balanced AL postseason as 3 teams have 92 wins while the A's have 94 wins but in the NL, two 95 win teams will be facing an 86 win team and an 87 win team.

Well starting Opening day to the September in Review post in took 26 days

alot can go into this, maybe I've been playing more than I should be but either way if I'm home and it's raining outside or something say on a weekday then I'll be usual inside playing this game

even though it was a 26 day season, it felt like 10 days

Both of my clients (Lohse and Gregg) were very happy with their performances this year and they had a lot of fun. They are looking forward to the postseason.

National League Division Series Preview - Los Angeles Dodgers Vs Pittsburgh Pirates

Image Image

If this series was going on in early May then the Pirates would be panicking but this season series was a story of the two seasons in a way. The Dodgers won their first 8 games against the Pirates in 2012, both sweeps in 4-game sets, but after they met later in the year the Pirates went 5-1 against them. The Dodgers had to fight to get into the postseason this year, after going 15-12 in the first month they went 13-14 in May and June and then 13-12 in July to go on a mediocre 3-month stretch of going 39-40 but they were able to win the NL West with 87 wins. As for the Pirates, they were in control for pretty much the whole season, once again thanks to their great pitching with a 3.94 ERA. The Dodgers struggled to pitch though with a 4.85 ERA but their offense was different. They had a lot of power with an amazing power display from a catcher in Russell Martin(37 HR), Ramirez hit 29, Loney hit 25 and Ethier hit 25 while they got .300+ average years from Brian Roberts(.318), Ramirez(.324) and Andrew Ethier(.302). The Dodgers also have speed with guys like Roberts(50 SB), Furcal(40), Pierre(21), Ethier(18) and Loney(15), they'll be against the arm of Ryan Doumit who has a weak arm for a catcher and the Dodgers will need to capitalize on it. The Dodger's rotation was not very strong as guys like Randy Wolf and Huroki Kuroda have dived as they've gotten older and their job is to control the power bats of Werth and Jones who exploded in the last few month of the season. Other notes on the teams are their home and away records. The Dodgers played extraordinary away from Dodger's stadium with a 53-30 record but played 34-45 ball at home and the Pirates went 50-29 on the road to match that but the 45-38 record at home is much better the LA's. The experienced Kuroda will get the game start as the Pirates will send out ace Anibal Sanchez to start game on in Pittsburgh.

Down Below are the rotations:

Los Angeles Dodgers

SP - Chad Billingsley : 11-0, 4.48 ERA
SP - Clayton Kershaw : 9-11, 4.99 ERA
SP - Huroki Kuroda : 8-11, 4.55 ERA (Game 1 Starter)
SP - Randy Wolf : 8-5, 3.46 ERA
SP - Mike Mills : 8-3, 4.42 ERA

Pittsburgh Pirates

SP - Anibal Sanchez : 14-5, 2.90 ERA
SP - Zach Duke : 16-8, 4.03 ERA
SP - Kyle Lohse : 12-6, 3.77 ERA
SP - Paul Maholm : 12-9, 4.11 ERA
SP - Rich Blackburn: 9-5, 4.75 ERA

Jayson Werth Comes Up Clutch To Give Pirates 1-0 Lead In Series

October 5 -- The Pirates have started this series on the right note winning a low-scoring game where all of the scoring came from homeruns. The Pirates struck first in the bottom of the 2nd inning with a homerun by Garrett Jones who hit 42 regular season homeruns. But Kuroda and Sanchez were both good tonight and it stayed 1-0 until the 6th inning. Manny Ramirez led of the bottom of the 6th with a solo homerun to tie it and then two batters later, Andre Ethier hit a monster homerun which gave Los Angeles a 2-1 lead off of Anibal Sanchez. But magic struck in the bottom of the 8th inning. With 2 outs in the 8th, Cabrera doubled on a ball that Ethier dived and missed for a 2-out double which set up Jayson Werth who hit a dramatic towering homerun off of Kuo to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 8th inning. Street got two quick outs in the 9th inning but allowed a 2-out double to Russell Martin to put the tying run on 2nd base but Street bared down to strike out Casey Blake to give the Pirates a one to nothing series lead in this best of 5 series.

Series Tied As Pirates Lose Tough Loss in Extras

October 6 -- Los Angeles has tied this NLDS up with a late comeback of their own that would end in 10 innings. Jayson Werth was a run man wrecking crew for the Pirates today, he brought in the games first run with an RBI single in the 1st but the Dodgers took a 3-1 in the 4th inning starting with a 2-run homerun by Russell Martin and then later on an RBI single by Juan Pierre. But in the 5th inning the Pirates responded against Mike Mills(well known for his perfect game in July against the Dodgers) as Jayson Werth delivered again with a 3-run homerun to chase Mills from the game and give Pittsburgh the 4-3 lead. After Duke went 5 innings, the bullpen took it from there but with the tying run on 2nd base in the 8th inning for the Dodgers with 2 outs, the Pirates called on Huston Street to get the 4 out save. He would retire Blake to end the 8th inning and get the 1st out of the 9th inning but with 1 out in the 9th, Andre Ethier hit hit 2nd NLDS homerun to tie the game up and make it 4-4 to send the game into extras. Joe Beimel got the 1st two outs in the 10th inning but a Brian Roberts 2-out single would turn into trouble as speed came into play when Doumit's throw was late on the stolen base by Roberts and Furcal would drive him to make it 5-4 and end up giving the Dodgers a win.

4th Inning Homeruns Send Pirates To L.A One Win Away From LCS Return

October 8 -- After tonight's 4-2 win, the Pirates will head back to Los Angeles with a chance to clinch a ticket to a 2nd straight NLCS ticket, it would be against the Marlins who became the first team to clinch an LCS spot so far. The Dodgers scored first in the 1st inning with an RBI single by Andre Ethier who has had some big hits so far. The Pirates finally took control in the game in the 4th inning though against Randy Wolf. Garrett Jones hit a 2-run homerun to give the Bucs a lead and with 2 outs, Ryan Doumit and Steve Pearce would go back to back to make it 4-1 and cap off a 3 homerun bottom of the 4th inning. Juan Pierre would hit a rare homerun in the 5th innning to make it a 2-run game but Lohse was dominant tonight striking out 8 and allowing 2 runs to give Pittsburgh a 2-1 series lead.
