Boston Red Sox (68-86) @ Kansas City Royals (100-54)
September 24, 2013

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals powered their way to a win today over the Red Sox. Manny Ramirez hit an RBI double in the first to put the Red Sox up by one, but the Royals stormed back with four in the bottom of the inning. Billy Butler hit an RBI single and Khalil Greene blasted a three-run homer. Kevin Youkilis hit an RBI double in the second for another Sox run, but the Royals scored another four in the third on two-run homers by Billy Butler and Alex Gordon. Jason Varitek smacked a solo homer in the top of the fourth, but Nick Johnson countered in the bottom of the inning with his own solo jack. The Royals added on two more in the sixth with back to back solo home runs by Nick Johnson and Billy Butler, the second of the day for each of them. The Red Sox scored the final three runs of the game on a two-run single by Jacoby Ellsbury in the seventh and a solo home run by Manny Ramirez in the eighth. Luke Hudson came on to pitch the ninth, and while it looked scary with the bases loaded and Manny Ramirez batting, he managed to get Manny to ground sharply to third to end the game with a 5-4-3 double play.

September in Review

After a not so good August, the Royals turned it around and made September their best month of the season. They went 21-7 with a season high 142 runs scored and a very good 82 runs allowed. Their month record was so good thanks to finishing the month on an eight game winning streak. Nick Johnson had an explosive offensive month, raising his batting average to close to .300 and now having 48 home runs and 153 RBI. Kyle Davies made his last start of the season, finishing with a 2.04 ERA and a 20-3 record with 235 strikeouts over 220 innings pitched. Jaokim Soria has reached 40 saves for the season and is still leading the majors in the category. The Royals also continue to blow the rest of the majors away with their running game. David DeJesus is leading by far with almost 80 stolen bases with Felipe Lopez and Mark Teahen a ways behind him at second and third. The Royals still have one more game to be played in the regular season, and then it's on to the playoffs!

October 8, 2013

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals were unable to complete the sweep against the Blue Jays tonight as Kyle Davies gets out-dueled by Rick Vanden Hurk. The Jays scored two in the second with an RBI triple by Cressend and an RBI groundout by Gregg Zaun. The Royals tied it in the fourth with a two-run homer by Nick Johnson. In the seventh, Matt Stairs provided the go-ahead and winning run for the Blue Jays with a solo homer. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Nick Johnson lined a single up the middle. He was lifted for pinch-runner Esteban German who stole second base. Then, as Billy Butler lined a hard base hit into center, it looked like the Royals would tie it. German rounded second and Vernon Wells came up throwing and barely nailed German at home for the second out of the inning. Butler got to second on the play, but the Royals would not be able to get him in.
