Dempster vs Cook
Alfonso Soriano got things started in the 2nd with a homer. Todd Helton, however, hit a 2-rbi single to give his team the lead. Dempster didn't let it shake him and, with the help of some fine plays by Mark DeRosa and Kosuke Fukudome, pitched 6 solid innings of 3-run ball. The Cubs comeback came in the 5th, when they rallied for 3 runs and took the lead. Michael Wuertz gave up a run in the 8th, then Kerry Wood gave up 2 more in the 10th. The Cubs got swept for the first time this year. Lou Piniella had this to say after the game:

Wuertz's ERA is less than 1, and Wood has just been screwing up too many times.

Rockies Finale
Marshall vs Francis
Both Marshall and Francis pitched remarkably well. Francis didn't give up a run until the 4th inning, Marshall until the 5th. The Rockies took the lead after Ryan Theriot and Mark DeRosa got confused over who was getting the ball and who was covering second. Geovany Soto batted in a run to tie the game back up again. Derrek Lee then gave the Cubs the lead on a very close play in which Reed Johnson barely beat the throw home. As promised, Lou Piniella brought Wuertz in to close the game, and he did so flawlessly.

Cubs Take 1st in Key Series
Marquis vs Bush
The Cubs attacked the Brewers today with fundamentals. They worked the count; Soriano and Johnson utilized their speed on the basepaths; the offense advanced runners with bunts and hit-and-runs, and the Cubs displayed some of their best glovework all month. Even Mike Fontenot, who usually struggles on defense, made 2 fantastic diving plays. In the 6 innings that the two very similar pitchers Marquis and Bush lasted, the Cubs had scored 4 runs and held the Brewers to 1. The bullpen was very solid and Michael Wuertz recorded his 3rd save. The Cubs are now within 1 game of leading the NL Central.

Cubs, Brewers Tied for Division Lead
Lieber vs Someone
Each team scored a run in the 1st inning, and the score remained 1 all for 7 innings. In the 7th, the Cubs rallied for 3 runs to get a 4-1 lead. The game then concluded with another save by lights-out Michael Wuertz.

Cubs Sweep, Lead NL Central
Zambrano vs Capuano
Carlos Zambrano was a force to be reckoned with tonight. In 6 innings, he gave up only 3 runs with 6 strikeouts. Meanwhile, the Cubs offense bombarded Capuano, scoring 6 runs off the southpaw in 6 innings. Carlos Marmol had one of his bad days, and gave up the Cubs lead in the 8th. But Alfonso Soriano and Ryan Theriot came through in the clutch to finally win the game in the 10th. The Cubs are now the NL Central Division leaders.

Trade With Braves Approved!
I get
Brad Pena (C)
500PP

They get
Great Duncan (P)
Henry Blanco (C)

The Cubs have traded minor league pitching prospect Great Duncan and aging catcher Henry Blanco to the Atlanta Braves for young catching prospect Brad Pena. Pena is to be Geovany Soto's primary backup.
Braves GM wrote:
Great Duncan was just what we were looking for. He's a talented lefty with tons of potential.
He was so good that the Braves didn't mind getting the rather overpaid Blanco and relinquishing $500,000 (500PP = $500,000 right?)
Cubs GM wrote:
Blanco was just not worth what we were paying him. We're sad to see Duncan go, but he was also a bit expensive. Pena is minimum wage and will be a fine backup for Geo. We hope to keep up these transactions throughout the year.

What are Pena's abilities? Is he a success player?

No, he's the Braves' actual backup catcher. I believe his skills were somwhere around D F F D D C. I'll have to check later.

Are you sure it was Brad Pena? I am pretty sure it is Bryan Pena.

Probably. All I know is that it starts with B, and Brad was the first name that popped into my mind. So, whatever. I got a good, young backup catcher and all I gave up was a young pitcher and an old catcher.

He's better than Blanco and he's minimum wage. That's good enough for me.
EDIT: Turns out it's Brayan Pena. He's 2 D F F D D D

Return to the Rockies
Lilly vs Buchholz
Strangely, the Rockies started a relief pitcher today, even though their swing man, Franklin Morales, was in shape to start. Whatever the case, the Cubs got to Buchholz early with 3 straight hits by Johnson, Theriot, and Lee. To his credit, that was the only run that Buchholz gave up, but that's not saying much since he only lasted 2 innings. The Cubs strategically worked the count against the Rockies bullpen, leaving them tired for the next 2 games in the series. Meanwhile, Lilly pitched 5 solid innings of 3-run ball. Kerry Wood, working in relief, has been watching his ERA go down further and further.
Lou Piniella wrote:
If he can get his ERA below 3 again, then we can talk about giving him the closer role back.
Michael Wuertz, the current closer, protected a 1-run lead in the 9th and earned another save. The Rockies used up all their relievers but Morales. It seems the Cubs have the upper hand in this series, as their bullpen is going to have some sore arms in the morning.

I hate the CPU's decision to start relievers with starters available. I can't wait til this gets fixed in 2010 but Buchholz once was a starter but a reliever is his thing

And good luck to Wuertz, he's the one with the good slider right?
