Spring Training 2013

Coming into Spring Training this year, the only face missing is catcher John Buck. Instead of resigning Buck, the Royals let him go in hopes that rookie Luke Umbria would be ready for the big leagues come opening day. He has worked very hard the last couple of seasons and especially so during Spring Training this season in hopes to land the starting catcher job for the Royals. His work is paying off and it appears the job is his. Umbria adds a little more youth to a team that does appear to be getting older. Some other youngsters that have been working hard this spring include the many pitchers that have been down in triple-A, including Steven Blackburn, Drew Ormond, Daniel Barden Rico Oliveros, and Jose Camacaro. All of these young arms are eager to make it to the big leagues soon. It's heating up down here in Arizona, and it's starting to look a lot more like baseball time again after a long winter break.

Kansas City Royals - 2013

The Royals have kept just about all of the same players from their major league best team last season. With Luke Umbria becoming the starting catcher their only change, the Royals hope to repeat their incredible season or even improve. Some of the players, like Kelvim Escobar or Nick Johnson are getting older, so it will be interesting to see if they can keep up their incredible numbers and keep up with the younger players on the team and around the majors. While there are some older players, some of the younger players signed long extensions with the team, including David DeJesus, Kyle Davies, and Joakim Soria. These are the guys who will potentially lead this team in the years to come. But of course, we must focus on the year ahead of us: 2013.

Wow... I know this hasn't been updated in a while, but it was my favorite log in my time on the site. I was looking at the beginning of the log, and realized that you played 2 months of games, one a series, in the span of July 10th to July 14th. How does he do it?

This is a great log, its fun to see him put together his team year after year, a long with his drafts. His drafts are my favorite part, they're always very good and he's using many of the players right now on the big league club.

I'm glad you guys like the log. I love playing with this team and I too love having so many drafted players on my roster. I just get lucky when it comes to drafting players, I guess. It only took my 5 days to play an entire month of games in my Cubs dynasty on MVP, and I'm currently playing through a month of games in my Rockies franchise on Power Pros. Then I'll get back to this one. :D

Go on...

Sorry, I'm thinking of taking notes and starting up another season log this summer. I need ideas on how to make it not suck like probably all the other ones.

Sorry, I'm thinking of taking notes and starting up another season log this summer. I need ideas on how to make it not suck like probably all the other ones.

I think the number one thing is don't worry about winning imediently. Often the most satifying logs are the ones that are 1. Realistic (No signing 15 players in F/A in the first offseason, No super steal trades etc.) and 2. Have a long enough wait to become world champions. Examples include this one, Jacobye's Pirates log and Hawaii Eagles. Also, add a little humor from time to time.

And most of your logs were not bad, they just took an interesting idea that no one has tried and went with. Unfortunatly, the ideas weren't fun to listen to, like your 5th round draft pick log. It was neat idea, it just was frustrating to watch him fumble in AAA.

I think adding color helps, and making important stuff stick out. That's what I try to do.

Well this is probably the fastest I've come back to this log after playing my other franchises. I played 9 games of my Rockies franchise today alone and now return to begin the Royals' 2013 season.

Cleveland Indians (0-0) @ Kansas City Royals (0-0)
Opening Day 2013

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals got brutally beat on opening day as Kelvim Escobar got shaken up in a very short outing. The Indians started off with two runs in the first with RBI hits from Travis Hafner and Casey Blake. He then got into more trouble in the second giving up a two-run double to Franklin Gutierrez and a two-run homer to Travis Hafner. Later in the fifth, Hafner finally got the final punch to knock Escobar out of the game with another two-run homer. David Dellucci got the final Indians run later in the inning with a solo shot to right of Leo Nunez. The Royals offense finally came alive in the bottom of the fifth. Alex Gordon and Luke Umbria got back-to-back RBI hits off the dominant CC Sabathia. The Royals would tack on two more in the ninth with RBI doubles by Mark Teahen and Khalil Greene, but that would clearly not be nearly enough to spark a comeback as the Indians win opening day.

I hope a lot of you aren't huge Kelvim Escobar fans, because he may not make it much longer on this team. That wasn't just a random bad outing; his age has finally caught up to him and his abilities have diminished quite a bit. His curve ball has dropped all the way to level one, was very weak, and was the pitch the Indians got most of those hits on. I'll keep him around a little longer, but will probably end up trading or releasing him soon. He's in the final year of his contract.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (1-3) @ Kansas City Royals (3-1)
April 7, 2013

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals managed to walk away with a win tonight in a game that almost got away from them late. Bobby Abreu got the Angels on the board first in this one with a two-run triple in the second. The Royals took the lead in the fourth with two home runs: a solo shot by Teahen and a two-run blast by Khalil Greene. Felipe Lopez then blasted this one wide open in the fifth with a three-run shot to put the Royals up by four. After some more scoring by both sides, including home runs from Bobby Abreu for the Angels, and Chris Conti and Alex Gordon of the Royals, we get to the ninth inning with the Royals still leading by four. Luke Hochevar came in to take care of the final three outs, but was unable to do so as he gave up three runs on two doubles by Reggie Willits and Howie Kendrick. Now a save opportunity, Joakim Soria came to the rescue and recorded the final out of the game to secure the Royals win.

Minnesota Twins (5-4) @ Kansas City Royals (5-4)
April 12, 2013

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals beat the Twins today in extra innings walk-off fashion. The Twins got to Anthony Ziegler early as Brad Hawpe and Justin Morneau both hit two-run homers in the first inning. With the score now 5-2, Brad Hawpe chased Ziegler from the game when he hit his second home run, a solo shot to start the fifth inning. The Royals finally came back in the seventh inning against Franklin Morales. Luke Umbria got a run across with a sacrifice fly, Chris Conti hit a clutch two-run double, and David DeJesus tied it with an RBI double to drive in Conti. Now this game went into extra innings, but it wasn't long before the next run was scored as John Buck belted a solo shot in the top of the tenth against his former team. J.J. Putz came in to close out the bottom of the inning, but after Chris Conti reached first, was pinch-run for by Joey Gathright, and a stolen base, David DeJesus tied the game for the second time with another RBI hit. The game remained 7-7 until the thirteenth when Esteban German, who came into the game just a couple innings prior as a pinch runner for designated hitter Billy Butler, got the walk-off RBI hit to win the game for the Royals.
