Amezaga's Slam Get Bucs past Lincecum

Tim Lincucum has had a complete 360 this season coming into today with a 7.10 ERA and it didn't get much better today. Werth sac flied in the 1st inning off of Lincecum but the biggest blow of the game came from Amezaga and his first homerun of the year, a grand slam which has become a nice theme this year, to make it 5-0 in the 2nd inning. Jeff Karstens was cruising and no-hit the Giants through 4 1/3 innings but it was broken up by a double by Bengie Molina and the shutout was over with an Aaron Roward RBI single. The Pirates continue with their "leave the game and probably be back tommorow" injuries and Karstens had to leave the game in the 6th with elbow pains. Steve Pearce has proved great off the bench and in his spot start he made it 7-1 with his 2-run shot, this one off of Brad Hennesey and the Giants would roll to the end in the 7-1 win in AT&T Park.

Homers Help Back Sanchez's Performance Breaking Shutout

May 28 -- Sanchez looked more than a cy young then Cy Young did sometimes and today he showed it. He passed Bob Veale for the Pirates single game strikeout record with 17 strikeouts. Sanchez only allowed one hit and it was to Ryan Braun in the 4th inning and no runner made it to 2nd base in this game. Homeruns accounted for 4 of the 6 Pirates runs and started with an RBI single by Cedeno in the 2nd inning, a 2-run shot in the 2nd inning for Ikari, a solo homerun for McCutchen in the 3rd, and an RBI single in the 4th for Werth who also homered in the 7th inning to cap the Pirates scoring. The Pirates have now won 9-2 in their last 11 games.

Church's Walk-Off Caps Comeback Win in Extras

May 31 -- The Pirates ended their month on a bitter note after a 10 inning loss to the Atlanta Braves. Susumi Ikari homered in the 2nd inning for the 1-0 lead but it was brought right back with a sacrifice fly from former Pirates Adam LaRoche. The game remained tied until the 7th inning when Ikari wrapped a lined shot around the pole in right field for a homerun and Pearce homered 2 hitters later to make it 3-1 off of the rookie lefty Darula who pitched very well against the Pirates today. The Braves rallied in the bottom of the 8th though, Brian McCann doubled in a run with 2 outs in the inning and Street came in and ends up blowing his 2nd save of the year after an RBI double by Ryan Church. The Pirates month ended in the 10th inning when Ryan Church and his 4th hit of the day gave Atlanta the walk-off victory.

Pirates May In Review

The Pirates followed up with their second straight spectacular month going 18-7 in the month of May. Huston Street finally came through getting 7 saves this month and lowering his ERA down to 3.80 while starters such as Sanchez(2.35) and Cook(3.00) continue to dazzle and lead this team with 5 wins each. They got a resurgence from Werth and also got an 8 homerun month from Susumu Ikari. Right now the Pirates lead the NL Central by 4 games over the Brewers and Cardinals. One thing interesting this season is the amount of great races. There is a 4 game tie for the NL Wild Card(with the Padres 1 behind) and a 3 game tie for the AL wild card while 2 of those teams look for an AL Central crown. Stats will be posted and updates after next months review.

Cook To DL With Side Pains

The Pirates sent RHP Aaron Cook to the 15 day disabled list with side pains after his injury last night in Nationals Park. Cook went 5 innings and gave up 2 runs, 0 earned, but his main story was in the 5th inning when he slid into home plate safe but hurt himself in the process. He is scheduled to miss 13 days but will be put on the 15 day disabled list. To replace him in the rotation will be RHP Ross Glanville, a draft pick a few years ago. Another choice was Kevin Hart but they have been happy with him in the bullpen and his 4.22 ERA.

Homeruns Back Glanville's Great Outing and Prevent Sweep

June 4 -- Usually going into Nationals Park is never scary but they were going to face a sweep today versus the NL East 1st place Nationals. Garrett Jones homered in the 2nd inning for the Pirates while Werth and Amezaga added on solo shots in the 3rd inning which at that point made it 4-0. Ross Glanville was the story of the game though, he went 5 1/3 inning and 1 run which wasn't an earned run because of an error by Cedeno. Jayson Werth hit his 2nd homerun of the game in the 9th inning of the game to make a 4-2 game into a 5-2 game which would be saved by Street on 5 pitches to prevent a sweep to the Nationals in Washington.

if I was to tell someone that this would be the marquee matchup of the day they would think I was high
its kind of like the White Sox being the best AL team in the last 3 years... I think its because of Jake Peavy

Interleague Play Preview

The Pirates will begin their interleague series at US Cellular Field in Chicago and face the best team in the AL since 2008 in the White Sox. They will play the Indians to begin their home interleague game play and they will also play Boston at home(in July), the Twins and of course the Indians. This interleague play, the Pirates will travel to Chicago, Detroit and Boston, they will face Boston twice. The only true challenges will be the Red Sox and White Sox who have the best record since 2008 but they will also have to play 1st place Cleveland, fighting with the Chisox for the wild card and central division.

Thome's Big Day helps Rally in Interleague Opener

June 6 -- The Pirates had no defense against the White Sox and Jim Thome's big bat. Mark Buehrle, who has struggled so far this season with a 5.45 ERA, gave up a leadoff homerun to Andrew McCutchen to begin the game and he gave up 3 runs after 6 innings. Duke was rolling along but it all fell apart in the 6th inning when Jim Thome, 2nd in the AL in homeruns, hit a 3-run homerun to tie the game while Carlos Quentin made it back to back homeruns to give the White Sox a lead. Already up by 2 in the 7th, Jim Thome struck again with a homerun to make it 6-3 White Sox. The Pirates rallied in the 8th though with a 2-out RBI double by Ramon Vazquez made it a 2-run game. But the Pirates fell in the 9th inning on bad baserunning mistakes. The Pirates got the leadoff guy on, the next guy doubled and Ikari was thrown out at home and if he wasn't thrown out then it would've been 2nd and 3rd with noone out. The baserunning also failed again with the runner getting thrown out at third base on a ball the pitcher Jenks knocked down and with that, the Pirates were knocked down as well. Duke also had to leave the game in the 5th inning with elbow pains, his conditions is not yet known but the concerning part is that the pain wasn't from fatigue.

After leaving the game with elbow pains in the 5th inning of the White Sox game yesterday, LHP Zach Duke will be sent to the disabled list with elbow pains. The Pirates have decided on RHP Virgil Vazquez(great bennett) to take his turn in the rotation and give him a chance. He has a 6.38 ERA in 19.1 career innings. Duke joins Cook as the other Pittsburgh starter to be on the 15-day disabled list.

Current Pirates Starting Rotation

RHP - Anibal Sanchez
LHP - Paul Maholm
RHP - Jeff Karstens
RHP - Ross Glanville
RHP - Virgil Vazquez

Late Rally Sinks Tribe

June 11 -- The Pirates have had trouble in this interleague series in keeping teams big hitters in check, they weren't able to make a rally over the Indians tonite on ESPN(8:35 game, only game this late). Virgil Vazquez made his first career start and with mixed results, he gave up 2 homeruns in the 1st inning to 2 dangerous hitters in Sizemore and Hafner(both with .300+ averages too). Sizemore's 3rd inning sac fly made it 3-0 but down 3-2 in the 7th inning, Mike Fontenot came through with a 2-run homerun tonite off of Vinny Chulk to make it 4-3 Pirates. But Grady Sizemore tied the game off of Bautista was a solo shot in the top of the 8th inning. But in the bottom of the 8th, quiet hitter Travis Buck gave the lead to stay with an RBI single into center field to help fight off another AL Central hopeful.

Pirates Draft Day

This was a very disappointing draft for the Pirates who picked 27th. They got 2 pitchers but only saw potential in one and it was Paul Stynes. He is an 18 year old out of Boston College with 5 start potential according to scouts. He is left-handed overhand, throws a cutter(1) slider(1) palmball(3) and his top speed he'll show is 86. But a reminder that he is 18 with great potential
