Oh well, maybe you can deal for Kemp later. I still say he's a guy you should look into should a spot open up. Right now I would accept the Soria for James deal then try and see what you can do with one of your other players like you said.

BTW, Great Soria is Jason Repko (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/repkoja01.shtml) and also I wanted to mention that it's weird the game has Thurston (if that really is him, I can't really tell for sure) as a 2B/LF since he's mostly played 2B and 3B in the minors and majors and has only played 11 games in left field in the majors.

Thanks for the comments. I often find its easier to trade position players for positions players, and pitchers for pitchers, but a position player for a pitcher is harder. It's quite possible that I'll be able to turn around and package Soria with a scrub (I think Ive got 1 left - an outfielder with D speed and Es and Fs for everything else) for Kemp.

Thanks for mentioning Soria's real name, btw. As for Thurston (aka Great White), that's not based on my research - other posters commented on that. I think the game is weird on secondary positions. Can anyone believe that if Alex Rodriguez went back to shortstop in 2008, he would've been bad? And shouldn't most OF be able to play at least one other OF spot?

Don't worry about the Thurston thing, Erisa. I know it wasn't you who came up with that being him, that was other peoples' (and kind of mine) assumptions. I was thinking it might be Pete Orr too but it'd take some research to find out who was a FA back then and whatnot; I also have a feeling it's based on when exactly the game came out because the rosters might have been different from one month in '08 to another.

And yeah, the game is weird about that stuff, which is a tiny part of why I prefer editing rosters as to keeping them as is. Besides keeping it up to date, anyway.

I'm interested to see what happens there, I like that there's a lot of ideas being tossed around. That's what I love about season mode, formulating ideas to make bad teams better and loading them up with young players, and so on. :)

On topic, a lineup with Fields, Cust, then Kemp, and the others would be fun to see. Then again, I wonder how Repko would do. I guess it depends on whether you prefer the power of Kemp (small note: was he really bad enough to have G e.res ? wow.) or the speed of Repko.

I agree - it's hard to believe that he warranted a G. I did a quick check on his fielding - I only checked one site, but it rated his 2007 DWAR as -0.4. I think that means the ave centerfielder was 0.4 better than him. I wouldn't think that warrants a G error rating, but I'm not really familiar with hownthosestats work.

Repko could be a really fun pick-assuming the trade goes through. It's rated 3 stars. Being that I've got a solid team, I'm not comfortable trying to push 2-star trades through. Shouldnt take long to get him to A speed and he's got solid defense.

Your reference to Orr sounds familiar. I think someone mentioned him (maybe it was you), but 2 people went with Thirston and I went with the majority.

Yep, I remember saying that, that's why I brought it up.

Either way, I think it'll be fun to see how the team is like with the addition of Repko.

So...I posted this question as a separate discussin and got 0 answers - maybe I should take the hint. Anyway, for the 4th time this year a player of mine was injured, but not during a game. You k ow how in a game a pitcher might seek help for his elbow or a fielder gets hurt sliding into the base? Well, these 4 players had no issues during the game; I just noticed during the following game that they were green, and when I checked the injury board, they were listed.

That's never happened to me before. Has it happened to you?

Not that I can think of. Usually when the game is happening and someone's hurt they either stay in or are hurt and are out. Besides that they just go on the DL during simming or something. That's really the only time I've noticed injuries.

Also, on the topic of Kemp having G e. res, I think there should be a topic about "I can't believe that.." and it would be based on how much players have changed from '07 + '08 to now. :)

7/13 – 15/2009: Iowa City Country at Cleveland Indians

Each game was a blowout - and I'm thinking about changing to harder settings

Game one: Country Bourgeois (90 DB SL – two, CU – four, CB – four, VSL – one) at Indians Carmona (97 CA SL – one, CH – one, HSK – five)

The Country scored two in the first and then not again until the seventh when Spilborghs singled, stole second, came home on a Milledge single and then Erdos hit a two-run home run - the 1st of 2 homeruns he hit today.

Bourgeois had a three-hit shutout entering the seventh and left with one out, and nobody on in the seventh.

Final score: eight – zero, Country

Comments: this was an impressive win, especially considering that the Country continue to rest their players reporting in purple condition – currently Hudson, Fields, and Johnson – three of their top offensive producers. Spilborghs and Erdos were two of the players picking up the slack; Spilborghs went 4/5 with two doubles and three runs scored, while Erdos was 3/5 with two home runs and four RBIs.

Game two: Country Rijos (96 DB SL – two, CB – three, FO – three) versus Indians Byrd (90 CB 2SF – two, SL – one, CB – one, CH – two)

Other than a two-out, two run homerun by Cust in the 1st, Byrd was solid early on, throwing strikes and coming right after the Country batters with four and two seam fastball that kept them off balance and off the basepaths. Rijos was equally effective, not allowing hits in the first two innings. In the top of the third, Cust hammered a changeup up in the zone for a three-run homerun. Johnson followed with a homerun off of a curveball up and in that bounced on top of the wall before going over. Home runs by Schrager and two more by Cust, as well as numerous singles led to a final 12 – 0 Country win.

Comments: Rio pitched a fantastic game – shutting out the Indians through seven innings, and allowing only 4 hits, half of whom were erased on double plays. Green pitched just well enough to close out the game, allowing three hits over two innings with no strikeouts.

Injuries: McCurdy, cleared to continue playing after a hard slide at home, but pulled for precautionary reasons will be fine I should not miss any time, but Orlando Hudson broke his collarbone when diving back into second, and is expected to be out of the lineup for 30 days. He's been put on the 15 day disabled list. Josh Fields, who had been in the minors recovering from purple condition, was recalled to take Hudson's spot.

Game three: Country Jimenez (98 EB CB – two, CH – four) at Indians Westbrook (93 CA CU – two, CB – three, CH – three, HSK – four)

The pitching duel was broken in the top of the third when Cust hit a two run homerun with Erdos on first. The following inning, the Country loaded the bases with no out, but only managed a single run on a fielders choice. In the bottom of the fourth, the Indians catcher Martinez hit a solo homerun, and then when Jimenez, who is in blue condition and relying almost exclusively on his fastball, allowed runners to reach first and third without recording an out, he was replaced by Stratton (85 DC SL – three, CB – three, FL – three, SHU – one), who allowed a run to score on a double play before ending the inning. Three – two Country.

Schrager, playing second base today in place of the injured Orlando Hudson, led off the sixth inning with a solo homerun off of a change up high in the zone, and in the seventh, Dan Johnson hit a two run homerun, extending the Country's lead to six – two. In the eighth, McCurdy drove in another run, and then in the 9th, Cust golfed a fastball over the centerfield fence

Final score: eight – two Country

Yeah, maybe harder difficulty may be better. The last few games I've seen have been blowouts by the Country.

7/16 – 18: Iowa City Country at Detroit Tigers

Comments: this is the last opponent the Country will face before the All-Star break. Ryan Spilborghs reported in purple condition and was sent down to the minors, Clay Timpner (DECEDD – LF, CF) was called up to take his roster spot. Also, it was announced that relief pitcher Shawn Green suffered a bruise in practice and is expected to miss five days. Jiang takes his place on the roster

Game one: Country Bailey (93 EB 2SF – three, DCB – four) at Tigers Rogers (90 FC SL – two, CB – two, CH – one, SK – three)

In the 1st, RBI doubles by Dan Johnson and Josh Fields, followed by a Gary Sheffield solo home run in the bottom half gave the Country a 3-1 lead that was extended by 2nd inning HRs by Brendan Harris, starting at second in place of Orlando Hudson, and Jack Cust. When Josh Fields made a diving catch of a Sheffield shot that would have surely gone for extra bases, it ended the third inning with the Country leading five – one. A 2-run homerun in the 4th by Milledge off a high change up gave the Country 7. When the Tigers led off the bottom 1/2 with a single and a double to put runners at second and third with no out, it looked like they were in for a big inning, but a strikeout followed by a comebacker to Bailey that resulted in and out at home, followed by a soft fly ball to left ended the threat. Seven – one Country

Josh Fields, playing in blue condition for the last week, looked shaky on a few of his throws early on and after singling with one out in the fifth, was removed in favor of pinch runner Schrager. A single from Timpner brought in two runs. In the bottom half, Gary Scheffield came to the plate with the bases loaded and no out. A Sheffield single and an Ordonez double brought in four runs and sent Bailey packing, replaced by spot starter Pettijohn, who gave up another double before getting the first out of the inning. Another run scoring single preceded an inning ending double play. Nine – seven Country

In the 6th, the Country extended their lead to five on an RBI single from Harris and a Cust home run on an outside cut fastball. Pettyjohn was strong but was removed in the eighth inning, leaving with two outs and runners on first and third. Chamberlain entered the game and induced a pop out from Curtis Granderson to close out the inning. RBI singles from Timpner and Milledge, followed by Chamberlain allowing two singles, but no runs ended the game with a 14 – 7 Country win.

Comments: although Johnson was named player of the game for his timely RBIs, Milledge was the most exciting player at the plate. He went 4/6 with one homerun, three RBIs, and two stolen bases against the team with, arguably, the best catcher in baseball – Ivan Rodriguez. Starting pitcher Bailey was solid through three innings, but a disastrous five run fourth ended his day early. Pettyjohn picked up the win for his 3 – 2/3 innings of work, allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts.

Game two: Country Grindell (93 EB CU – three, CB – three, PA – three, HSK – one) at Tigers Bedard (97 CA CU – two, 2SF – two, CB – three, CH – two)

Note: changed settings so I can't see the pitch types being thrown, and lowered the computers abilities to expert level.

An RBI double from Huisman (batting 2nd) and a 3-run HR from Cust gave the Country an early four – zero lead. Neither team threatened again until the 4th, when Johnson led off with a double off the right centerfield wall and ultimately scored on a fielders choice that McCurdy hit into. Meanwhile, Grindell finished off the fourth, throwing a two-hit shutout. In the next inning, Milledge drove home Sweeney, who singled and stole second, and Milledge ultimately scored on a fielders choice. Cust then doubled and scored on a sharp single from Johnson that sent Bedard to the showers. Eight – zero Country. A sixth inning Huisman double allowed Milledge to score from first. Grindell continued to dominate tigers, striking out the first two batters but then tiring and being removed after giving up consecutive singles. Jiang came in and struck out Magglio Ordonez, keeping the shutout in tact. Nine – zero Country

Jiang pitched through to the end of the game, preserving the Country's shut out, nine – zero

Comments: Grindell was dominant, striking out 10 while allowing only four hits in his 5 – 2/3 innings of work. Jiang, who earned a save for pitching the final 3 – 1/3 innings, also pitched very well, allowing four hits with four strikeouts.

Game three: Country Depablos (93 DC SL – three, CB – four, VSL – one) at Tigers Bonderman (95 CA 2SF – one, SLV – three, CH – two)

Note: increased computers hitting, fielding, and baserunning abilities to all star; pitching still on expert

Inning two: Dan Johnson led off inning with his 40th home run of the season. The Tigers tied the game with three consecutive singles, and pulled ahead on the fourth. Two more singles, including one that was badly misplayed by Lastings Milledge gave the Tigers a five – one lead and sent Depablos to an early exit, replaced by Stratton (85 DC SL – three, CB – three, FO – three, SHU – one). Stratton retired the next two batters, and the second inning ended with the Tigers enjoying a five – one lead

Inning three: the Country stormed back, with Huisman singling home Milledge (who singled and stole second), and Cust doubling home Huisman. Fields drove in Cust and then Schrager homered on outside fastball over the opposite field fence, giving the Country a one run lead. Several consecutive singles by the Tigers gave them a one run lead, seven – six

Inning four: a Jack Cust RBI double brought in two runs and sent Bonderman to the showers. Maglio Ordonez drove in the tying run on opposite field single, and Stratton was unable to finish the inning. Eight – eight

Inning six: the Tigers took the lead on a two run homerun from third baseman Brandon Inge. 10 – eight, Tigers

Neither team would score the rest of the way and the Tigers won 10 – 8

7/17/2009: trade announcements

The Brewers sent starting pitcher Ben Sheets (96 CA HSL – two, DCB – five, CH – three; Dr. K, slow starter, choke) to the Indians in exchange for second baseman J Carroll (DEBCCC push hitter, hopped hitter, first ball, barehanded catch).

Sheets, earning $10.5 million, will be a free agent at the end of this year while Carroll, earning little more than 6 million per year, is under contract through the end of next season

This gives the Indians four pitchers with A stamina, to go along with four pictures of B stamina, without significantly weakening second base. The Indians have four second baseman under contract and experts presume that Cabrera (EDECAB, four – lefty, spray hitter) will take over at second.

This leaves the Brewers with six pichers with A or B stamina, although none throw as fast or have as much movement on their offspeed pitches as Sheets. Further, it is not clear how significant an improvement Carroll will be over Craig Counsell (EECBCD, lefty -2, bases clearer, gold glover, throwing – two)

The Mariners sent star pitcher Felix Hernandez (98 CA SL – three, CB – five, SP – two, CH – five), under contract for one and a half more seasons at 1.9 million per season, to the Diamondbacks in exchange for leftfielder Byrnes (DBCCBC), earning 4.6 million per season in the last year of his contract.

Fernandez should help solidify a Diamondbacks rotation that previously only had Brandon Webb as its lone picture with stamina A, to go along with 4 B stamina starters. The Diamondbacks probably will not miss Burns, with Jason Bay anchoring left field, at least for the current season.

It is less clear how this trade will benefit the Mariners, who currently have Ichiro Suzuki in center and Raul Ibanez (DBECCB, clutch hit – four) manning left field and under contract for another season and a half. This also is a huge blow to the Mariners rotation, leaving them with one A stamina starter and 3 B stamina starters. In general, experts say this trade is more likely to weaken the Mariners.

7/21/2009: the Mets are sending shortstop Rafael Furcal (DDBABD – hot spitter, first ball hitter, barehanded catch), scheduled to earn $13.65 million for the next 3-1/2 seasons, to the Rockies in exchange for leftfielder Matt Holliday (BABEDC, contact hitter, hot hitter, tough runner), earning $11.5 million in this last year of his contract

This trade gives the Mets an even more powerful offensive outfielder to complement Beltran and Church in center and right fields (DB contact and power), and it does this without compromising the Mets at shortstop since they still have Jose Reyes. Of course, Holliday is in AAA right now and will do the Mets no good unless they call him up which is not a given. After all, they traded for third baseman Mike Lowell earlier in the season and he remains in AAA

$13 million is a lot of money to pay for a backup shortstop, so Furcal will probably start, displacing Tulowitzki (CBDEDD), making him a $5 million per year backup shortstop.

7/22/2009: the Blue Jays traded third baseman Helms (DDBBDC – timely with, good pinch-hitter) to the Braves for second baseman Gotay (EDDDCD, timely whiff, lefty – one)

Gotay will be a restricted free agent after this season, in which he is earning $400,000. He is not an unrestricted free agent for another 2 1/2 seasons. Gotay might be an improvement over incumbent second baseman Inglett (CFCEED). The Braves likely will not miss Gotay, staying with their incumbent, Johnson (DBCAFB).

Helms has one and a half years remaining on a contract paying $920,000 annually. Helms will likely be the primary back up to starting third baseman Chipper Jones.

Dumb trades by Seattle and Rockies..

Then again, we have the "star-traded-to-new-team-but-doesn't-get-called-up-or-is-on-bench" disease once again, so the Mets lose..for now. Call up Holliday and they killed the Rockies there.

7/23 – 24/2009: Iowa City Country at Seattle Mariners

Game one: Country Depablos (93 DC SL – three, CB – four, VSL – one) at Mariners Washburn (92 CA 2SF – one, SLV – two, CH– two)

Innings one–two: Erdos drove in Milledge, who had singled and stole second. The Mariners pulled ahead on a double by Sexson that brought in two runs. Josh Fields tied the game on a solo home run to left and Harris followed by hitting his 15th homerun – this one a solo shot off a changeup down the middle of the plate. Mariners catcher Johjima tied the game when he led off the bottom of second with a homerun to centerfield. 3-3

It took until the sixth inning for the tie to be broken as, after Fields was thrown out at the plate, McCurdy singled home Huisman. After retiring the first batter, Depablos allowed a double to Beltre, and was replaced by Shawn Green. Green give up a game-tying double to Johjima, as well as the go-ahead run on the third single Green surrendered. Very sloppy play allowed an infield single, as both the pitcher and the first baseman went for the ball and neither covered first. A fielders choice and an RBI infield hit by Ichiro Suzuki extended the Mariners lead to three runs. Seven – four Mariners

Inning eight: the Country started the eighth with two singles followed by an RBI double from Harris, putting runners at second and third. A sacrifice fly from Huisman brought in a run and left the tying runner at second. That runner would be left stranded. RBI singles by Ichiro and Ibanez (after a successful Ichiro steal of second) extended the Mariners lead to four runs

The Country singled, but did not score and lost the game 10 – 6

Comments: Josh Fields was 4/4 and missed the cycle by only a triple

Game two: Country Rijo (96 DB SL – two, CB – three, FO – three) at Mariners Dickey (87 EC SL – one, CB – two, CH – two, KN – two)

Inning one: Erdos singled home Milledge, who had singled, stole second, and went to third on a passed ball. After Erdos was thrown out on a steal attempt, Cust homered off of an 0-1 inside fastball. Two – zero Country

Inning three: after Milledge, again, singled and stole second, Cust came up to the plate with two outs and hammered an outside fastball over the right centerfield wall. Dan Johnson, who hit a deep fly ball that just missed being a homerun by inches in his first at-bat, homered off a fastball out over the plate this time around. Five – zero Country

Innings four-five: the Mariners broke through in the fourth on a Sexson single and back to back doubles from Encarnacion and Beltre. Another single and a double brought the Mariners to within a run. Grindell, not scheduled to start for another 3 games, entered to start the fifth inning and gave up several singles and the game-tying run on a sacrifice bunt. Five – five

Inning nine: the Mariners brought in reliever O'Flaherty to start the fifth and the score remained tied entering the ninth inning when O'Flaherty threw a first pitch fastball to Johnson that he put over the right centerfield fence for the go-ahead run. Chamberlain entered to pitch the bottom of the 9th and did allow the tying run to reach second base on a double, but got the save, striking out three in the process.

Final score: six – five Country.

Comments: Chamberlain was named co-player of the game for his save, while Dan Johnson was co-named for hitting the go-ahead homerun in the top of the nighth. Cust and Johnson were both 2/4, with both hits being homeruns. Milledge stole another two bases.

Bourgeois, who pitched the eighth inning, got the win. The Country manager was asked why he had starting pitcher Grindell, scheduled to start 3 games from now and Bourgeois, schedule start 4 games from now, pitch in today's game. He responded "All my pictures were in red or pink condition and I wanted to give them a little work so they don't get stale by the time their turn comes around."
