Houston Astros(32-23) @ St.Louis Cardinals(32-23)
May 29th, 2008- The Cards finished off a sweep of the Astros today at Busch Stadium, and it brought them into a tie for first place in the division! The Astros scored first, in the top of the 2nd off of a Towles RBI double. Hunter Pence scored later on a fielder's choice, making it 0-2, after 1 1/2 innings. The Cardinals got on the board in the same inning, when Juan Encarnacion rolled one slowly back up the middle, just clearing a diving Miguel Tejada's glove for an RBI single. The Cardinals showed some power in the 3rd, leading off with back to back singles by Miles, then Barton. Pujols then smashed his 17th homer of the year, to right center on a weak fastball right down the middle. Later in the inning, 8th batter Cesar Izturis did the same thing! That 3 run dinger made it 7-2, Red Birds. The pitching was solid after that, until the 8th when Randy Flores gave up 2 runs on a Wiggington sacrifice fly, and an RBI single by Bourn, cutting the lead to 7-4. Jason Isringhausen was brought in to close, but loaded the bases with only 1 out. Wiggington struck again, this time with a 2 RBI single to left center, bringing the score to 7-6, Cards. But Isringhausen would get the next 2 outs, and get the save. Rookie Brian Barton has been slumping after a hot first month, his average has been hovering around the .250 mark after being .328 after April. He has not homered yet in May either. Hopefully he can return back to his April self.

St.Louis Cardinals May Review
June 1st, 2008- Month number 2 of the MLB season has passed us by, so let's look at how the Cardinals did over the past 31 days. Leading off, a look at the NL Central standings.

Astros- 34-23; ...
Cardinals- 32-25; 2 GB
Pirates- 28-28; 5.5 GB
Brewers- 26-30; 7.5 GB
Reds- 26-31; 8 GB
Cubs- 24-32; 9.5 GB

The Cardinals did have a strong May, going 17-11, and cutting the Astros' divisional lead to 2 games. They were tied after sweeping them in a late month series, but then dropped 2 in a row to the Pirates, which put our Red Birds back 2 games. The Cardinals are poised for a playoff spot, through the first 2 months of the year. They are leading the Wild Card race at this point.

For league leaders, Carpenter bumped up one spot in the ERA rankings, and is now in 3rd, with a 2.31 ERA. Closer Jason Isringhausen has a 2.95 ERA, and leads the MLB in saves, with 16 in 16 opportunities. Pujols is still tied for first with David Wright in the NL HR race, with 17 longballs each.

Looking into June, the draft is this month, as well as most of our inter-league games. Hopefully we can get some solid players in the draft. I think we will mainly be looking for pitching, but aren't ruling out drafting a fielder if there is somebody we are interested in available. We have the 13th pick.

Now, hopefully our Cardinals can keep it up into June, and stay on the tail of the Astros!

Ah, yes, the draft. The most important part to building your team for the future, along with training.

The Cardinals took 2 pitchers in this years draft, hopefully they will be able to help out the big league club soon. Said GM BrewersFuzz; "We were really interested in a RF named Pearce, he looked to be really good according to our scouts. But, the Orioles took him with the 4th pick, way ahead of our 13th pick. So we were kind of bummed we didn't get him. But Brewer looks to be the real deal."

ROUND 1:P, Brewer: C control, C stamina, 92 mph, 3 CUT, 3 SLD, 1 CB, 3 FORK, Durability 4

ROUND 2:P, Sparks: D control, C stamina, 91 mph, 3 SLD, 2 CB

"We are really excited about Brewer, we feel as if he can contribute to us right away. We are thinking about pulling him up right now, and making him either our Swing Man, or 6th man in our rotation over Mulder. We think he can do really well at the Major League level."

When we asked Brewer about his thoughts on being put in the majors right away, in a sink or swim situation, he replied; "I won't just swim, I'll walk on water."

Not our best stretch of games. Oh well. Do you guys think I should pull up Brewer to take Mulder's spot?

so he's Jesus in the flesh, huh.

I like the picks though. You're building young pitching like the real Cards.

Teehee, yeah. I thought of that line and had to include it for my first round pick. :)

And yeah, I think I'm gonna pull up Brewer before the next game. :) not sure what to do with Sparks though, his stamina is a low C... I was thinking make him a reliever in a few years and just have him work on control for now.

BREAKING NEWS
June 14th, 2008- We have two pieces of news from the Cardinals. First, the St.Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates have reached a trade agreement:

Cardinals get;
SP Zach Duke(6-2, 2.34 ERA)

Pirates get;
RP Joel Pineiro(played in AAA)
5000 points

This deal should help the Cardinals rotation mightily, acquiring a young lefty, Duke. GM BrewersFuzz said that he wasn't sure the Pirates would agree, but he is glad they did. "We kind of low-balled them with that offer, giving them a pitcher who was in the Minors and a small amount of cash. I'm not going to complain though, I think Duke can be an ace in the future. This just adds another good, young pitcher to our rotation." Hopefully Duke can carry his success in Pittsburgh to St.Louis. To make room for Duke on the Major League roster, Braden Looper was sent down. He was 3-4 with a 5.74 ERA.

------------------------------------------------------------

In other news, the Cardinals have called up recently drafted SP Brewer. He is scheduled to make his debut on June 15th, against the Phillies at Busch Stadium. Mark Mulder was sent to AAA to make room for Brewer. "We have very high expectations for Brewer, but we also expect a little bit of a learning curve for him. We expect him to be one of the anchors of our rotation for a long time." Mulder was 4-3, but had 6.62 ERA.

Philadelphia Phillies(35-36) @ St.Louis Cardinals(35-36)
June 15th, 2008- The Cardinals dropped their 6th game in a row to the Phillies today, and have lost 11 out of their last 14 games. June has not treated them well, so far. Rookie pitcher Brewer made his major league debut today, and pitched pretty solid, going 5 innings and giving up 2 runs with 7 strikeouts, in a losing effort. The 2 runs he gave up came in the top of the 1st, on a 2 run homer by Ryan Howard after a Chase Utley triple. That made it 0-2 before the Red Birds could even bat. Brewer came back strong in the 2nd inning though, striking out the side with authority. After that, the offenses were silent, until the 8th when Utley singled and Howard hit his 2nd dinger of the game, making it 4-0. The Cards managed to salvage a run, also in the 8th, with Miles scoring on a sac fly by Pujols. Jamie Moyer pitched a complete game for the Phillies, giving up only 1 run. The Cards really struggled against the Phillies offensively, scoring 2 runs in this series. Hopefully they can snap out of this losing streak.
