I was standing alone near the hangar for the team's private jet, which was due to leave any minute, when my phone rang. Not surprised by the caller's identity, I answered with a sigh.

"Calling to gloat, Preston?"
"Nonsense, Matt. You know I never use my work phone for personal calls. I have a trade proposal that I would like you to consider."
"The trade deadline was three days ago."
There was a moment of silence.
"Hm. You're right. Then I guess I am just calling to gloat."
"Really?"
"Yes, really. But it was a good series. That Japanese fellow pitched a good game. Perhaps you'd like to trade him for cap space this winter."
"Is this all you called to talk about?"
"...Yes. Goodbye."
*click*

"Matty!"
I turned to see Claire headed my way. Already annoyed by Preston's taunting, I snapped at her.
"I'm really not in the mood, Claire."

The words came out harsh. Her eyes fell.

"They just wanted me to let you know we're ready for takeoff." Her voice was low, and she didn't make eye contact before turning to walk away. I was already kicking myself.

"Wait! Claire!" she looked back at me as I ran up to meet her. "I'm sorry. I was just... taking something out on you."
"It's okay," she said and wrapped her arms around me. She was warm, and the smell of strawberries coming from her wavy blonde hair filled my nose. I closed my eyes and placed my right hand on her back, feeling the smooth fabric of her pink jacket against my palm. She pressed her cheek against my shoulder and squeezed quickly before stepping back.

"Now let's go before we miss the flight!"
"They wouldn't leave without us..."
"C'mon!" she ran off towards the plane and I, shaking my head, jogged behind her. "Next stop: Boston, Massachusetts!"

Mr. Otsuka does not appreciate being called "that Japanese fellow", and while he appreciates the appreciation for his game, he would like to cordially invite this Preston guy to "1v1" him "irl".

Mr. McCarthy on the other hand is probably too busy hitting dingers to care about any of this

Honolulu Gunmen (64-45) vs. Boston Red Sox (66-43)
August 4th-6th

We play the high-powered Red Sox six times in our next nine games. They're third in the Majors with 151 home runs on the year, six more than us.

They are leading the AL Wild Card, leaving us two games back.

3, C, B, E, D, E, B, Power Hitter, Tough Out, Bases Clearer, Walk-off HTR, Intimidator, Pr Rain, Star, Slugger, Cautious STL, Pr Small Ball, Gd Eye

3, B, A, F, F, F, G, Clutch Hit 4, Contact Hitter, Power Hitter, Walk-off HTR, Intimidator, Consistency 4, Gd Rain, Star, Slugger, Cautious STL, Gd Eye
Bio: The 3 to Ramirez's 4, Ortiz is perhaps the best DH in the history of the game.
Analysis: Ortiz's average is a little low, but he's mashing home runs at an awesome rate.

Dean Sanders - C
.261, 23 HR, 70 RBI, .820 OPS

Bio: One the field, the veteran Sanders is one of the best power hitters in baseball and a fantastic catcher. Off the field, he's known as a family man and all-around great guy and is an absolute fan favorite. The day his career ends will truly be a sad one for all of baseball.
Analysis: Sanders is producing at his usual level.

Boston, MA

The day after our last game with Boston, I awoke relatively early and decided to take a long, hot shower before our flight left for Oakland.

After getting the water running, I grabbed a set of travel clothes out of my suitcase and laid them neatly on the bathroom counter. I tested the water with my hand. Perfect, I thought, and stepped in.

Well rested but still in the process of waking up, I closed my eyes and let the water spill over my shoulders, relaxing my every muscle. After a minute or so, I reached for the shampoo. That’s when I was interrupted by a pounding on the door.

Who the *(censored)* is coming to my room right now? It’s way too early for housekeeping. I ignored the knocks and started to wash my hair.

*BANG BANG BANG*

There it was again, three loud knocks in quick succession, like a police officer on a suspect’s door. I once again decided to ignore it, rinsing my hair-

*BANG BANG BANG*

“Matty! I know you’re in there!”

God damn it.

I turned off the water, dried my hair, put on a robe, and headed to the door.

“What?” I demanded, looking through the peephole at Claire. She was wearing a dress.
“Get dressed!” she yelled. “Look presentable!” she added.

Something strange was going on, and my heart fluttered with nerves. Is the media here? I quickly donned a shirt and tie, and went to see what was going on.

“Come on! We have to go!” Claire grabbed my hand and led me down the hallway to the elevator.
“Where are we going?” I asked.
Her eyes shone bright. “Breakfast!”

I stopped walking. “Breakfast?” Claire nodded with a smile. “I thought something was wrong,” I said, trying to sound stern.
“Oh please, Matty,” she quipped with a tug on my arm. “Let’s go.”
“I’m not sure we have time for breakfast,” I said as we walked. “The plane will be leaving soon and I’m not packed.”
“Don’t worry. You said it yourself, they won’t leave without us.”
She had me there.

Outside, the streets of Boston were already flooded with activity. Claire hailed a cab and gave an address that I didn’t recognize.

“190 Newbury Street,” she told the cabby. “And step on it!”
“I’m sorry, where are we going?”
“I told you! Breakfast!”
“That’s not what I meant…”

I soon found out exactly where we were going: a place called Stephanie’s. We stepped inside, and I was floored by its interior.

It was a soft, yellow-lighted room. Servers made their way quickly across the tiled floor in pristine white shirts and dotted burgundy neckties. At a carpeted area near a fireplace, patrons laughed as they chatted and sipped bloody Marys.

“Claire, this is…” I said, the shock evident in my voice, “really nice.”
“Only the best for the birthday boy,” she replied with a smile.
“You know?”
“Of course I do.” She walked up to the hostess, “Rouse, party of two.”
“Right this way,” the woman said cheerily before leading us to a back corner of the restaurant. “Your server will be right with you.”
“Thank you.”

As we sat down, I gave Claire a suspicious look.

“How much is all this going to cost me?”
“Oh please, Matty. It’s all on me. Have whatever you like.”
“Wait… Are you serious?”
“Come on… I wouldn’t make you pay. Not on your birthday.”
“Well, in that case…” I took a look at the menu, “I think I’ll be getting the Eggs Benedict. I’ve always loved me some hollandaise.”
“Wait, Matty, before we order, there’s something I wanted to…” I looked at Claire, who, for the first time in probably her entire life, appeared to be at a loss for words. “Not tell you, well, I want to tell you something but that’s not the right word…” She trailed off.

The mere idea of some sort of confession or breaking news caused my heart to race with anticipation. That happens to everyone whenever they’re waiting to hear something, which is why it happened to me at this moment. Claire continued.

“Well, I guess it doesn’t really matter. What I wanted-”

Just then, our waitress came by.

“Good morning, my name is Lindsay, and I’ll be taking care of you today. Can I start you off with something to drink?”
Neither Claire nor I spoke. Lindsay stood there awkwardly, forcing a grin as her eyes shifted back and forth from each of her silent customers.
“Oh, uh, I’ll just have water,” I said at last.
“And for you?”
“Orange juice, please,” said Claire.
“All right, I’ll be right back with those!”

She walked away, and my attention returned to Claire, who was now looking over the menu.

“Oh. My. God,” she squealed with excitement. “Breakfast Burger.”
“What?”
“They have a breakfast burger. Matty this changes everything. This is a whole new ballgame. Do you know what this means?” she was speaking quickly now.
“Uh, Claire?”
She looked up, smiling wildly.
“Didn’t you want to tell me something?” I asked, trying not to sound too interested.
Her smile faded a bit.
“Oh, yes. Well, kind of. I, uh… I wanted to give you this.”

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a gift.

“It’s nothing big, I just thought, you know, it’s your birthday and all, and… well, just open it.”
“Oh, you didn’t have to do that,” I told her.
“I know. I just wanted to.”

With nothing else to do, I began to tear open the gift in my hands.

“It’s a book!” I exclaimed.
“Yeah… The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It’s my all-time favorite,” she informed me. She still seemed nervous. “I noticed you finished your other book last week on the plane, so I… it’s not a big deal, really…”
“No! It’s… thank you. This is very thoughtful.”
Her face lit up. “You like it?”
“Yes,” my heart was racing, inexplicably. “I’ve been meaning to find some new reading material.”
“I’m really so glad you like it.”
“I really do.”

Lindsay returned with our drinks. We ordered our food, eggs benedict for me and, what else, a breakfast burger.

“Happy birthday, Matty,” she smiled warmly. I smiled back.
“Thank you, Claire.”

Honolulu Gunmen (66-46) vs. Oakland Athletics (46-66)
August 8th-10th

Key Players:

Eric Chavez - 3B
.274, 17 HR, 54 RBI, .809 OPS
3, E, D, C, C, B, B, Spray Hitter, Hot Hitter, Barehand CTH, Consistency 2, Error Prone, Star, Aggressive HTR, Cautious STL, Aggressive FLD, Gd Eye
Bio: Though he's no longer the star he was in his twenties, hometown hero Eric Chavez remains very popular and moderately productive in Oakland.
Analysis: Chavez leads the A's in homers with a modest 17.

Ryan Sweeney - RF
.266, 74 R, 14 3B, 15 SB, .717 OPS
2, A, F, B, D, E, D, Gd Day Game, VS Lefty 1, Stealing 2
Bio: An excellent leadoff man, Sweeney is great at getting on base and has the speed to overcome his often poor jumps when stealing. He struggles against lefties and has very little power, but usually hits for a good average.
Analysis: Sweeney has cooled in the last month, his average dropping from .281 to .266.

Mark Ellis - 2B
.321, 14 HR, 19 2B, 56 RBI, .907 OPS
3, D, B, C, E, C, B, Contact Hitter, Hot Hitter, Gd IF HTR, Barehand CTH, Clutch Hit 2, Patient HTR, Aggressive FLD
Bio: The 31-year old is a top-of-the-line second baseman on both sides of the ball.
Analysis: Ellis remains pretty much the only bright spot on this abysmal Athletics offense, leading them in average, doubles, and OPS.

Projected Pitching Match-ups:

Game 1
Charlie Huff (9-4, 3.45) vs. Esteban Loaiza (4-9, 5.69)

Game 2
Akinori Otsuka (9-5, 3.77) vs. Shawn Hill (3-5, 6.75)

Game 3
Johnny Rivera (4-5, 3.14) vs. Jason Bergmann (6-4, 4.54)

August 12th-14th

After we play the Red Sox again, this time at home, the Athletics come to town. The schedule's kind of weird here, and because of our 6-man rotation, we'll be throwing the same three guys against each team as last time.

They're leading us for the AL Wild Card by one game.

Key Players:

Manny Ramirez - LF
.332, 24 HR, 97 RBI, .975 OPS
3, C, B, E, D, E, B, Power Hitter, Tough Out, Bases Clearer, Walk-off HTR, Intimidator, Pr Rain, Star, Slugger, Cautious STL, Pr Small Ball, Gd Eye
Bio: Simultaneously one of the game's most feared sluggers and most electric personalities, 36-year old Manny Ramirez is an absolute superstar in Boston.
Analysis: Ramirez is leading the Red Sox in batting average, RBI, and OPS. He's red hot and killed us in our series last week.

David Ortiz - DH
.248, 28 HR, 81 RBI, .841 OPS
3, B, A, F, F, F, G, Clutch Hit 4, Contact Hitter, Power Hitter, Walk-off HTR, Intimidator, Consistency 4, Gd Rain, Star, Slugger, Cautious STL, Gd Eye
Bio: The 3 to Ramirez's 4, Ortiz is perhaps the best DH in the history of the game.
Analysis: Ortiz's average is a little low, but he's mashing home runs at an awesome rate.

Dean Sanders - C
.259, 24 HR, 75 RBI, .817 OPS
3, D, A, F, A, D, E, Bases Clearer, Gd Catcher, Star, Slugger, Aggressive HTR
Bio: On the field, the veteran Sanders is one of the best power hitters in baseball and a fantastic catcher. Off the field, he's known as a family man and all-around great guy and is an absolute fan favorite. The day his career ends will truly be a sad one for all of baseball.
Analysis: Sanders is producing at his usual level.

Projected Pitching Match-ups:

Game 1
Michael Davis (10-4, 3.56) vs. Josh Beckett (10-3, 4.37)

Game 2
Cesario Castillo (6-7, 3.37) vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka (12-5, 4.51)

Game 3
Brendan Bikowski (10-3, 2.22) vs. Curt Schilling (8-3, 3.90)

I should try that, seems like you get some realistic stats that way.
