With the trade deadline looming, a couple offers came in today:

Trade 1:
Nationals receive 3B/C Donnie Wilde (3, D, D, D, C, D, D)
Gunmen receive LF/CF/2B Willie Harris (2, E, D, C, D, D, D)

Trade 2:
Padres receive IF Blake Walker (1, E, E, E, E, D, F)
Gunmen receive RP Justin Hampson (92, B, E, SLD[2], CB[3], CHG[2])

The first offer was a pretty easy no on my part, since it would leave a pretty big hole at third base, but the second offer was much more tempting. The 22-year old Walker is a valuable utility man that's still young enough to be considered a prospect, but his triple slash at AAA this year is uninspiring (.268/.329/.351), and Hampson (28) is a more than competent reliever with very good control and solid off-speed pitches. Our relief pitching depth lacking, I decided to go through with the deal.

Oakland Athletics (41-56) vs. Honolulu Gunmen (56-41)
July 22nd-24th

We swept them in a series back on the 7th. Hopefully we can do the same again, this time at home.

Key Players:

Eric Chavez - 3B
.281, 14 HR, 45 RBI, .817 OPS
3, E, D, C, C, B, B, Spray Hitter, Hot Hitter, Barehand CTH, Consistency 2, Error Prone, Star, Aggressive HTR, Cautious STL, Aggressive FLD, Gd Eye
Bio: Though he's no longer the star he was in his twenties, hometown hero Eric Chavez remains very popular and moderately productive in Oakland.
Analysis: After playing only 90 games in 2014 and batting only .240, Chavez seems to have bounced back.

Ryan Sweeney - RF
.267, 63 R, 14 3B, 14 SB, .718 OPS
2, A, F, B, D, E, D, Gd Day Game, VS Lefty 1, Stealing 2
Bio: An excellent leadoff man, Sweeney is great at getting on base and has the speed to overcome his often poor jumps. He struggles against lefties and has very little power, but usually hits for a good average.
Analysis: Sweeney is slumping pretty bad right now; his OPS has dropped 34 points in his last 10 games.

Mark Ellis - 2B
.325, 11 HR, 51 RBI, .911 OPS
3, D, B, C, E, C, B, Contact Hitter, Hot Hitter, Gd IF HTR, Barehand CTH, Clutch Hit 2, Patient HTR, Aggressive FLD
Bio: The 31-year old is a top-of-the-line second baseman on both sides of the ball.
Analysis: Ellis is having a career year at the plate.

Projected Pitching Match-ups:

Game 1
Michael Davis (8-3, 3.28) vs. Esteban Loaiza (4-7, 5.05)

Game 2
Cesario Castillo (5-7, 3.43) vs. Shawn Hill (3-3, 6.25)

Game 3
Brendan Bikowski (8-3, 2.26) vs. Jason Bergmann (5-3, 4.78)

He's so good it's almost hard not to hit homers. I toy with the idea of avoiding big swing with him but I know based on his personality he would never hold back.

McCarthy, Wayne, and Warr hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the 4th!

McCarthy hit the wall behind home plate pretty hard going for a pop-up in the 5th and came out for concussion screenings, but he should be okay. Donnie Wilde stepped in and caught the rest of the game while Matt MacKenzie played third.

Honolulu Gunmen (59-41) vs. Minnesota Twins (51-49)
July 25th-27th

Our first match-up with the Twins. They're hitting .276 as a team but have an ERA of 5.06.

Key Players:

Dick Shogun - SP
6-5, 5.17 ERA, 108.0 IP, 144 K
95, D, A, CUT(3), CB(7), SPLT(2), CCHG(2), Spin 4, Safe Pitch, Dr. K, Gd Delivery, Gd Rain, Release 4
Bio: An ace in the truest sense of the word, Shogun has been dominating AL hitters with his lively fastball and wicked curveball for a decade now.
Analysis: Shogun has been struggling almost inexplicably this year, with hitters batting a solid .276 against him. He's still among the league leaders in K/9, however.

Joe Mauer - C
.339, 10 2B, 10 3B, 13 HR, 58 RBI, .933 OPS
2, C, C, C, C, B, B, Contact Hitter, Push Hitter, Hot Hitter, Gd IF HTR, Firstball HTR, Throwing 4, HD 1st Slide, Gd Catcher, Gd Day Game, Gd Rain, Durability 2, Star, Slap Hitter, Patient HTR, Gd Eye
Bio: One of the best all-around players in baseball, the 25-year old Mauer is the centerpiece of this Minnesota franchise.
Analysis: Mauer is just a shade off his career highs in batting average (.346) and OPS (.936).

Justin Morneau - 1B
.324, 11 2B, 11 HR, 67 RBI, .868 OPS
3, D, B, E, C, D, B, Contact Hitter, Gd IF HTR, Firstball HTR, Throwing 4, Consistency 4, Barehand CTH, Pr Rain
Bio: The second half of a truly terrifying JM-combo, Morneau (27) is the older of the pair.
Analysis: Morneau came into the year with a career batting average of .276. That number's already up to .282.

Michael Cuddyer - RF
.327, 15 2B, 15 HR, 76 RBI, .924 OPS
3, D, C, B, D, E, C, Gd IF HTR, Throwing 4, Gd Eye
Bio: He may be overshadowed by his slightly younger teammates, but the 29-year-old outfielder is no slouch.
Analysis: Though normally a tier below Mauer and Morneau, Cuddyer is having a phenomenal year, arguably the best of anyone on the Twins.

Projected Pitching Match-ups:

Game 1
Charlie Huff (8-4, 3.49) vs. Dick Shogun (6-5, 5.17)

Game 2
Akinori Otsuka (8-4, 4.05) vs. Matt Morris (5-3, 5.37)

Game 3
Johnny Rivera (3-4, 3.26) vs. Nick Campbell* (2-2, 4.58)
*Rookie taken in first round of 2015 draft

Series Preview: Chicago White Sox (55-48) vs. Honolulu Gunmen (62-41)
July 28th-30th

The AL Central-leading White Sox will be looking for revenge for our last series, when we swept them.

Key Players:

Tim Illard - DH
.253, 10 HR, 50 RBI, .709 OPS
2, A, B, E, F, D, D, Contact Hitter, Bases Clearer, Walk-off HTR, Pull Hitter, VS Lefty 2, Cautious STL
Bio: Illard will be turning 38 in August, and this fact has been represented by the fact that his power numbers have decreased gradually; that's not to say he's not still an incredible hitter, however.
Analysis: Illard has be struggling all year, and may very well be in the twilight of his career.

Paul Konerko - 1B
.332, 30 HR, 100 RBI, 1.070 OPS
4, C, A, E, C, C, B, Power Hitter, Hot Hitter, Intimidator, Throwing 4, Durability 4, Consistency 4, Barehand CTH, Star, Patient Hitter, Cautious STL, Aggressive FLD, Gd Eye
Bio: Konerko has been a staple of the White Sox offense for years, and will probably continue to be through the end of his career. He possesses tremendous power which sometimes overshadows his excellent fielding abilities.
Analysis: Konerko is in (a distant) second place in the majors in home runs, behind you-know-who.

Jermaine Dye - RF
.298, 24 HR, 69 RBI, .933 OPS
4, D, B, E, D, C, B, Power Hitter, Hot Hitter, Tough Out, Consistency 4, HD 1st Slide, Gd Day Game, Gd Rain, Slugger, Aggressive FLD
Bio: Dye is an impressive power hitter with above average fielding abilities. He tends not to strike out very often, and hits 30+ home runs yearly. And if it's raining at a day game... God help us all.
Analysis: With his .933 OPS, Jermaine Dye would be the top hitter on most teams that don't feature someone named Konerko.

Johan Santana - SP
11-4, 2.64 ERA, 128 K
96, C, A, SLV(5), CCHG(5), w/RISP 4, Spin 4, Dr. K, Gd Pickoff, Consistency 4, VS LH Batter 2, Choke Artist, Star, Cautious STL
Bio: The White Sox acquired Santana on July 16th in what can only be described as a horrendously move by the Mets. He's one of the most fearsome pitchers in the majors and is only 29 years old. I mean, pitchers like this don't just fall off a cliff at 32.
Analysis: 2nd in the AL in wins, 5th in ERA, and 15th in strikeouts.

Projected Pitching Match-ups:

Game 1
Michael Davis (9-3, 3.14) vs. Javier Vasquez (4-9, 4.90)

Game 2
Cesario Castillo (5-7, 3.48) vs. Dave Bush (7-5, 4.57)

Game 3
Brendan Bikowski (9-3, 2.26) vs. Zach Duke (8-5, 2.87)

To be fair, it's the same joke I made last time we played the ChiSox.

July in Review

July of 2015 became the best month in Honolulu Gunmen history as we went a stunning 19-6, taking control of first place in the AL West one game ahead of the Dolphins.

Player Statistics

SP - Charlie Huff
9-4, 3.39 ERA, 116.2 IP, 84 K
Charlie finished the month 3-0 while his ERA remained steady at around 3.40. His strikeout numbers were solid as he set down 25 men on strikes in 28.0 innings.

SP - Brendan Bikowski
10-3, 2.11 ERA, 127.2 IP, 139 K
Bikowski's historic rookie season continues as he went 3-0 in July, lowering his ERA from 2.33 and striking out a whopping 44 batters in 38.2 innings. His opponent OPS is a ridiculous .478.

SP - Akinori Otsuka
9-4, 3.84 ERA, 124.1 IP, 101 K
Otsuka has settled in and solidified himself as our #3 starter, having recovered from his awful April to bring his ERA down into the upper 3's.

SP - Johnny Rivera
4-4, 3.04 ERA, 94.2 IP, 61 K
Although he is for some reason struggling to win games, Rivera has been a pleasant surprise this year.

SP - Michael Davis
9-4, 3.50 ERA, 105.1 IP, 59 K
He doesn't get very many strikeouts, but Davis has been very solid.

SP - Cesario Castillo
6-7, 3.40 ERA, 111.1 IP, 73 K
Castillo had a good month, going 2-0 and striking out 24 in 26.1 innings.

RP - Ken Harp
6 G, 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 8.0 IP, 5 K, 0 SV, 1 HLD, 1 SVO
By far the least used guy in our bullpen, Harp only threw three innings this whole month.

RP - Evan Lorrier
26 G, 4-1, 1.26 ERA, 35.2 IP, 30 K, 0 SV, 4 HLD, 6 SVO
Lorrier is another guy that didn't get a whole lot of innings this month, throwing 4.2 shutout, striking out two, and getting a hold and a win.

RP - Viet Trieu
26 G, 2-1, 3.14 ERA, 28.2 IP, 19 K, 1 SV, 3 HLD, 5 SVO
Trieu didn't pitch much this month either, just 2.1 innings across three games.

RP - Devin Edwards
27 G, 1-2, 3.16 ERA, 37.0 IP, 24 K, 2 SV, 1 HLD, 4 SVO
Edwards got really roughed up this month, his ERA rising from 2.20 to 3.16 as he lost one game and didn't strike out a single batter.

RP - Adam Wilson
37 G, 3-1, 2.51 ERA, 46.2 IP, 38 K, 1 SV, 11 HLD, 15 SVO
This month for Wilson: 8 G, 9 IP, 6 K, 1 ER, a save, a win, and three holds. His opponent average (.194) is the lowest of any pitcher on the team besides Bikowski and Harp.

RP - Mike Colyer
35 G, 3-5, 2.61 ERA, 48.1 IP, 35 K, 0 SV, 13 HLD, 18 SVO
Colyer pitcher the second most of any reliever this month and took advantage, striking out 13 in 12.1 innings and only allowing one run.

CP - Rick Allen
45 G, 3-5, 4.09 ERA, 44.0 IP, 22 K, 32 SV, 0 HLD, 34 SVO
Allen converted 9 of 11 save opportunities this month while pitching 14.2 innings and striking out 9.

C - Matt McCarthy
.294, 46 HR (1st), 107 RBI (1st), 75 R (1st), 1.000 OPS (1st)
.276, 34 HR (1st), 75 RBI (1st), 56 R (1st)
McCarthy had another great monh, batting .355 with 12 hom runs and 32 RBI.

1B - Juan Hernandez
.300 (3rd), 24 HR (2nd), 66 RBI (2nd), 65 R (2nd), .850 OPS (2nd)
Hernandez's batting average had remained pretty steadily at around .300, but he only hit two home runs this month.

2B - Steve Bernard
.262, 10 HR, 33 RBI, .662 OPS
Bernard struggled a lot this month; his average dropped from .293 and he almost went the entire month without any home runs again. His .662 OPS is second worst among our starters.

3B - Donnie Wilde
.277, 6 HR, 33 RBI, 16 2B, .690 OPS
Wilde's up-and-down season continues; his average dropped 16 points and he went the entire month without an extra base hit.

SS - Jose Medrano
.309 (2nd), 7 HR, 46 RBI, 61 R (3rd), 25 2B (1st), 7 3B (1st), 20 SB (1st), 6 CS, .780 OPS
Medrano batted .309 in July with a home run, five doubles, and 3 triples.

LF - Marcus McElroy
.289, 6 HR, 6 3B (2nd), 47 RBI (3rd), 49 R (4th), 11 SB (3rd), 3 CS, .724 OPS.
I have no complaints about McElroy.

CF - Colin Raines
.252, 4 HR, 13 RBI, 37 R, 17 SH (1st), 18 SB (2nd), 2 CS, .622 OPS
Raines is our worst hitter, but we knew that before the season. His defense is fantastic and he's a very effective base stealer.

RF - Derek Wayne
.317 (1st), 15 HR (3rd), 44 RBI, 19 2B (2nd), .814 OPS (3rd)
Just two home runs this month for Wayne, but he's starting to hit more doubles.

DH - Patrick Warr
.267, 14 HR, 35 RBI, .727 OPS
A solid four home runs from Patrick this month.

2B/3B - Matt MacKenzie
.221, (19-86), 0 HR, 3 2B, 5 RBI, 7 R, 2 SB, 0 CS
A 3-for-20 month for MacKenzie lowered his average from .242 to .221.

OF - Danny Millwood
.288 (30-104), 8 HR, 3 2B, 2 3B, 18 RBI
Millwood went 7 for 28 this month but hit hit three home runs.

OF - Tommy Weaver
.167 (1-6), 3 SB, 0 CS
The 24-year old rookie hasn't yet played very much, but his stealing ability is impressive.

Sacramento Dolphins (63-43) vs. Honolulu Gunmen (64-42)
August 1st-3rd

With the Dolphins right behind us, this series could be one of the most important of the year.

It should be noted that because of the recent injury to Jose Medrano, though it wasn't serious, I decided to call up AAA shortstop Javier Soriano (2, F, F, D, C, C, D) since no one on our 25-man roster really plays shortstop. He's only hitting .273 for the Mustangs, but his defense is solid.

Key Players:

Sylvester Coddmeyer III - CF
.253, 16 HR, 49 RBI, .803 OPS
4, C, A, C, D, D, D, VS Lefty 4, Power Hitter, Slugger
Bio: Coddmeyer is an incredible power hitter, and in his younger days was referred to as "The Kid Who Only Hit Homers". Now, at the age of 25 and after breaking several college records, he is ready to take on the Majors.
Analysis: Despite his mediocre average, Coddmeyer is now the best hitter on the Dolphins since Skeeter Miracle was traded to the Mets.

Danny Walker - SS
.271, 11 HR, 46 RBI, .748 OPS
3, C, C, D, B, B, B, Throwing 4, Gold Glover, Barehand CTH, Pivot Man
Bio: Walker is a solid hitter, but his real talent lies within his fielding. Experts say he'll be a gold glove candidate throughout his career, and his ability at shortstop is only overshadowed by veterans such as Adam Everett, Omar Vizquel, and David Eckstein.
Analysis: Walker is leading the Dolphins in hitting.

Koby Caplin - SP
10-4, 2.08 ERA, 125.2 IP, 130 K
97, C, A, 2SFB(1), CB(3), CHG(2), Fastball Life 4, Dr. K, Star
Bio: The hard throwing young righty is one of the most popular rookies in recent memory, thanks to both his fastball and winning personality.
Analysis: Caplin faces off against Charlie Huff in game one of the series.

Projected Pitching Match-ups:

Game 1
Charlie Huff (9-4, 3.39) vs. Koby Caplin (10-4, 2.08)

Game 2
Akinori Otsuka (9-4, 3.84) vs. Eddie Cicotte (10-5, 3.03)

Game 3
Johnny Rivera (4-4, 3.04) vs. Bill Bailey (8-2, 2.94)
