June in Review

Player Statistics

SP - Charlie Huff
6-4, 3.45 ERA, 88.2 IP, 59 K
Huff was 1-2 on the month and saw a 0.37 increase in his ERA while striking out 19 in 24.1 innings. After an incredible May, he was good but not great in June.

SP - Brendan Bikowski
7-3, 2.33 ERA, 89.0 IP, 95 K
His opponent average is now .175 on the year, and he's having one of the best rookie campaigns I've ever seen. He went 4-1 in June, dropped his ERA from 3.56 and struck out an incredible 51 batters in 41 innings.

SP - Akinori Otsuka
6-3, 4.55 ERA, 91.0 IP, 75 K
Otsuka continues to steadily improve, lowering his ERA from 6.39 at the end of April to 5.33 at the end of May and now 4.55. He's also striking batters out at a decent clip, racking up 37 K's in 38.2 innings this month.

SP - Johnny Rivera
3-3, 3.65 ERA, 69.0 IP, 49 K
Rivera was great in April, awful in May, and great again in June. Hopefully that pattern doesn't continue.

SP - Michael Davis
6-3, 3.63 ERA, 79.1 IP, 51 K
Davis has been very consistent throughout the year, and June was no different. His ERA went from 3.81 to 3.63, though he went just 1-3 on the month and struck out just 12 in 27.1 innings.

SP - Cesario Castillo
4-7, 3.49 ERA, 85.0 IP, 49 K
Perhaps the most surprising player of the year, Castillo is pitching well despite what his record shows. He was 1-2 on the month despite dropping his ERA from 3.71 to 3.49.

RP - Ken Harp
3 G, 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 5.0 IP, 5 K, 0 SV, 1 HLD, 1 SVO
He's currently designated as our mop-up man, but his performance thus far suggests he may be suitable for middle relief. He pitched just three innings this month.

RP - Evan Lorrier
21 G, 3-1, 1.45 ERA, 31.0 IP, 28 K, 0 SV, 3 HLD, 5 SVO
He continued to pitch absurdly well until giving up three runs in game two of the last Phillies series, raising his ERA from 0.62 to 1.48. Still, he's been our best reliever this year.

RP - Viet Trieu
23 G, 2-1, 3.42 ERA, 26.1 IP, 18 K, 1 SV, 3 HLD, 4 SVO
Trieu was having a great month until getting roughed up by the Phillies twice in the last series.

RP - Devin Edwards
23 G, 1-1, 2.20 ERA, 32.2 IP, 24 K, 2 SV, 1 HLD, 4 SVO
Edwards had the best of any reliever, dropping his already-great 2.88 ERA to 2.20.

RP - Adam Wilson
29 G, 2-1, 2.87 ERA, 37.2 IP, 32 K, 0 SV, 8 HLD, 11 SVO
Wilson continues to outperform Colyer in set-up duties, though he was only credited with one hold this month.

RP - Mike Colyer
27 G, 3-4, 3.25 ERA, 36.0 IP, 22 K, 0 SV, 10 HLD, 14 SVO
Colyer had a good month, rebounding from a tough May and lowering his era 56 points while converting both of his hold opportunities.

CP - Rick Allen
29 G, 1-4, 4.30 ERA, 29.1 IP, 12 K, 23 SV, 0 HLD, 23 SVO
Another six saves converted, Allen is still perfect in save situations but struggling (though less so now) anytime else.

C - Matt McCarthy
.276, 34 HR (1st), 75 RBI (1st), 56 R (1st)
McCarthy's average is up from .266 and he hit another 15 home runs in June after hitting 16 in May. Paul Konerko of the Chicago White Sox is second in the majors with 25 home runs.

1B - Juan Hernandez
.304 (3rd), 22 HR (2nd), 56 RBI (2nd), 50 R (2nd)
Hernandez bounced back nicely after struggling in May, getting his average back from .282 to over .300 and hitting five home runs.

2B - Steve Bernard
.293, 8 HR, 29 RBI
Over the last two months, Bernard his hit no home runs and knocked in just five runs. He's 4th on the team in batting average but 7th in slugging and 8th in on-base, which is why he remains the 8-hitter.

3B - Donnie Wilde
.293, 6 HR, 28 RBI, 16 2B (2nd)
Wilde had a good month, raising his average 14 points and hitting two home runs while knocking in eleven. He also has shown himself to possess good gap power.

SS - Jose Medrano
.309 (2nd), 6 HR, 37 RBI (t-3rd), 46 R (3rd), 20 2B (1st), 4 3B (2nd), 18 SB (1st), 5 CS
Medrano was awful in May but good in June. He brought his average up from .288 and was perfect on eight steal attempts.

LF - Marcus McElroy
.286, 5 HR, 6 3B (1st), 37 RBI (t-3rd), 35 R, 9 SB (3rd), 2 CS
McElroy saw his production plummet this month, but he still remains a good enough 2-hitter.

CF - Colin Raines
.263, 3 HR, 11 RBI, 29 R, 12 SH (1st), 12 SB (2nd), 2 CS
Raines is doing all we can ask for out of the 9-hole and has been very consistent.

RF - Derek Wayne
.316 (1st), 13 HR (3rd), 33 RBI
Wayne is expectedly regressing after hitting .343 through April and May, but is still leading the team in batting average and is our third best power hitter.

DH - Patrick Warr
.275, 10 HR, 25 RBI
A decent average this month, but only one home run and one RBI.

2B/3B - Matt MacKenzie
.242 (16-66), 0 HR, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 5 R, 2 SB, 0 CS
MacKenzie is a good defender but was only 5 for 25 on the month, though he was 3 for 7 in two starts in the Phillies series.

OF - Danny Millwood
.303 (23-76), 5 HR, 2 2B, 2 3B, 14 RBI
By far the most valuable bench player, Millwood was 5 for 17 with a home run and four RBI this month.

RF - Roy Schapp
.161 (9-56), 1 HR, 2 RBI
He was 1 for 14 this month. Scouting reports indicate that recent draftee Tommy Weaver is major league ready, so he will probably replace Schapp very soon.

Glad to hear that! They will definitely keep coming for a while, especially since it's summer.

Series Preview: New York Yankees (53-28) vs. Honolulu Gunmen (45-36)
July 1st-3rd

The Yankees, who swept us in May, have won 23 of their last 31 games.

Key Players:

Kenneth Howard - SP
9-4, 2.33 ERA, 96.2 IP, 126 K
90, C, A, SCB(6), SLV(3), CCHG(4), FORK(3), Spin 4, Dr. K, Gd Delivery, Gd Reflexes
Bio: It's not hard to see why Kenneth Howard will be easily be a first ballot Hall of Famer. His curveball is absolutely incredible, and his other breaking pitches aren't shabby either. He's lost a few miles per hour to age, but he's still one of the best.
Analysis: Howard is easily having a Cy Young caliber season.

Paul Ceplin - SP
8-4, 2.75 ERA, 95.0 IP, 118 K
99, C, A, 2SFB(1), CHG(3), H-SNK(4), Fastball Life 4, Gd Low Pitch, Dr. K, Battler
Bio: A perfect complement to Kenneth Howard, Ceplin is one of the best power pitchers in the game today. He's 35 and getting on in years, but still frequently throws in the high 90's and clearly has plenty left in the tank.
Analysis: Ceplin has been almost as good as Howard. We're extremely fortunate not to have to face either in this series.

Derek Jeter - SS
.349, 15 HR, 69 RBI
2, C, B, B, D, B, C, Contact Hitter, Hot Hitter, Bunt Master, Gd IF HTR, Barehand CTH, HD 1st Slide, Stealing 2, Star, Aggressive RUN, Aggressive FLD, Gd Eye
Bio: The face of the Yankees for years, Jeter is one of the best shortstops in the game and will undoubtedly be a Hall of Famer.
Analysis: The 34-year old shortstop is showing no signs of aging.

Alex Rodriguez - 3B
.358, 22 HR, 70 RBI
4, C, A, D, C, C, C, Power Hitter, Hot Hitter, Gd IF HTR, Walk-off HTR, Intimidator, Durability 4, Consistency 4, Stealing 4, Gold Glover, Barehand CTH, HD 1st Slide, Gd Rain, Pull Hitter, Star, Slugger, Aggressive FLD, Gd Eye
Bio: Simultaneously one of the league's most hated and revered players, Rodriguez has the potential to challenge the home run record of Barry Bonds.
Analysis: Rodriguez is batting at a far higher clip than in 2014 but is on pace for 10 fewer home runs.

Projected Pitching Match-ups:

Game 1

Johnny Rivera (3-3, 3.65) vs. Ian Kennedy (10-3, 3.04)

Game 2

Michael Davis (6-3, 3.63) vs. Chien-Ming Wang (5-2, 5.25)

Game 3

Cesario Castillo (4-7, 3.49) vs. Phil Hughes (6-3, 5.74)

Kennedy's doing well for them. Wonder if the big three for NY actually work in this season.

Honolulu Gunmen (46-38) vs. Sacramento Dolphins (50-34)
July 4th-6th

This is our last trip to Panpaka Park for the year, as our last two series against the Dolphins are at home.

Key Players:

Sylvester Coddmeyer III - CF
.235, 12 HR, 39 RBI
4, C, A, C, D, D, D, VS Lefty 4, Power Hitter, Slugger
Bio: Coddmeyer is an incredible power hitter, and in his younger days was referred to as "The Kid Who Only Hit Homers". Now, at the age of 25 and after breaking several college records, he is ready to take on the Majors.
Analysis: Coddmeyer is struggling to get on base but has shown a decent amount of power in his debut.

Skeeter Miracle - DH
.294, 12 HR, 42 RBI
3, B, B, E, E, F, G, Spray Hitter, Hot Hitter, Tough Out, Error Prone, Slugger, Aggressive HTR
Bio: Though technically a first baseman, Miracle's fielding skills (or lack thereof) mean he'll never be anything more than a DH; however, he can still be a tremendous asset, even if it is just with his bat.
Analysis: Miracle is leading the Dolphins in batting average and is tied for the lead in home runs, proving his worth as a designated hitter.

Danny Walker - SS
.272, 9 HR, 35 RBI
3, C, C, D, B, B, B, Throwing 4, Gold Glover, Barehand CTH, Pivot Man
Bio: Walker is a solid hitter, but his real talent lies within his fielding. Experts say he'll be a gold glove candidate throughout his career, and his ability at shortstop is only overshadowed by veterans such as Adam Everett, Omar Vizquel, and David Eckstein.
Analysis: Walker has maintained steady production in the #2 spot on offense and has been all over the highlight reels for his defensive endeavors.

Koby Caplin - SP
8-3, 2.12 ERA, 101.2 IP, 102 K
97, C, A, 2SFB(1), CB(3), CHG(2), Fastball Life 4, Dr. K, Star
Bio: The hard throwing young righty is one of the most popular rookies in recent memory, thanks to both his fastball and winning personality.
Analysis: We lucked out once again and won't be seeing Caplin in this series.

Projected Pitching Match-ups:

Game 1
Charlie Huff (6-4, 3.45) vs. Wally Morris (6-4, 5.18)

Game 2
Brendan Bikowski (7-3, 2.33) vs. Eddie Cicotte (8-3, 3.16)

Game 3
Akinori Otsuka (6-3, 4.55) vs. Jimmie Todd (6-4, 4.19)

Well, you know what they say, he only hits homers. Maybe he strikes out in every other at bat.

His offensive abilities are almost identical to Alex Rodriguez's, who is batting .358, so I'd have to guess that it's an anomaly.

It's also interesting that the Dolphins are doing so well with their best player doing so poorly.
