Pirates Aquire Beimel from Rockies

The Pirates aquire LHP Joe Beimel today for underachieving third basemen Andy LaRoche. LaRoche hit .205 with 5 homeruns in his time with the Pirates this year and he is a career .236 hitter with 18 career homeruns in somewhere around 750 at bats. Beimel was currently in AAA and has a 4.05 ERA. To make room for Beimel, Dumatrait was designated for assignment and is expected to go down to AAA.

Pirates First Half in Review

If you were to tell the Pirates that they were gonna be in contention near the all-star break after adding no new faces in the offseason, they would think that you were crazy but they sure are in contention. They hav a 56-43 record and 6 back of the first place Astros, and are only 4 back of the wild card leading Cardinals. The Pirates were not lucky to have the Cardinals and Astros have a great season as they would usually be in first or second in other divisions. The Pirates pitching staff has been great this year with a 4.11 ERA and have allowed the least walks, runs and hits in the NL Central this year. Offensivly they have a middle of the pack offense but they have the most hits in the NL Central. The Pirates have plenty of chances to play the Cards and Stros', they face the Astros 9 more times and face the Cardinals 12 more times, alot of these games at home.

Standings

Houston Astros | 62-37

St. Louis Cardinals | 60-39

Pittsburgh Pirates | 56-43

Milwaukee Brewers | 48-51

Chicago Cubs | 46-53

Cincinatti Reds | 44-55

The American League continued its dominance with a 9-5 win over the National League. Tim Lincecum and Felix Hernandez were the starters for both teams and they both went 3 innings allowing 1 run. Both Bullpens struggled but a grand slam by Carl Crawford was enough for the win and it was enough for Crawford to be named All-Star Game MVP. There was plenty of offense in this capped by 4 homeruns. As for the Pirates. Joel Hanrahan went a scoreless inning and Andrew McCutchen showed off his great skills with a solo homerun.

any thoughts so far?
I'm actually enjoying doing this log, the last few I didn't care about much but this one is fun and somewhat realistic actually, this could be the log that I get past the 3rd year

The Pirates have won their 5th straight during their first game after the all-star break. The Pirates fell behind quick as Connor Jackson went deep in the 1st but the Pirates were able to able back with homeruns by Andrew McCuthcen and Jeff Clement who started the year 1-26 and now is hitting over .200. Clement drove the offense with a 2-runs shot which was part of a 3 RBI day. Karstens pitched well going 7 strong innings and was able to best D-Backs ace Brandon Webb. With a 3 run lead, Joe Beimel was able to get his save while debuting and giving Hanrahan a day off

Beimel wass edited so:

92 MPH
B control
E stamina
level 2 slider and curve
level 1 changeup
vs lefty 4
groundball pitcher
3.93 ERA

I edited Sherrill too but he had a 5.43 ERA and they wanted more than Andy LaRoche

The Pirates won the first of a two game set in Wrigley field thanks to a big homerun. The Pirates got on the board early once again with Jones' 18th homerun of the year but the Cubs fired right back with a 2 run homerun in the 1st. The scoring would quiet down as Harden and Duke would settle down. But with the score 2-1 in the 8th, Andrew McCutchen hit a 2 run shot to change everything and make it 3-2. Hanrahan would continue his dominance and once again get the save. The Pirates will face the Astros and Cardinals this week after this 2 game series.

The Astros have pulled closer with a 1-0 win over the Astros and have swept the division leader. The only run in the game was a 3rd inning RBI single by Garrett Jones off of ace Roy Oswalt. Karstens, Yates and Hanrahan were able to 1-hit the Astros to finish off a sweep and pull to 3 games back.

Hanrahan wants to know if he is the league leader in saves.
