I sat alone in my car, motionless. Upon checking the clock, I estimated to have been sitting there for half an hour. I checked my phone once more. No missed calls.

The engine roared to life as I turned the key. I pulled out of what was now a nearly empty parking lot and onto the highway. The speedometer climbed from 70 to 80, then 90 miles per hour. I took a deep breath, closing my eyes and letting off the gas pedal to let the car decelerate to a reasonable speed.

I looked up at the sign that was approaching. Exit 44, leaving 3 miles between myself and home. I glanced at my mirrors and turned the wheel, gliding across to the exit lane. After a series of turns, I ended up on Abbott Road. I pulled into the first parking lot I saw.

Exiting the car and entering the building, I found myself in a bar. I looked around and took a seat. The bartender looked at me, and I raised my index finger. Moments later, a bottle was placed on the counter.

My mind began to wander, but I forced it blank. I picked up the bottle and took a drink, wincing as the piss-colored liquid ran over my tongue and down my throat. I'd never been one for alcohol.

A television set above me showed highlights from the previous night of MLB action, the last thing that would be able to distract me. I instead took to peeling the label off the beer bottle. As I finished off the final letter of the brand name, I felt a buzz in my pocket. I picked up without looking.

"Hello?"
"Matt, where are you?"

It was Melissa.

"Me? I'm, uh... why, what's up?"
"Are you going to be home soon?"
"I... I don't know."

There was a pause.

"I know you're upset, but I think I have something that could cheer you up."

Another pause.

"I don't know about that."
"Come on, Matthew. Please come home as soon as you can. I promise it'll be worth it."
"I... I really don't feel like being home right now."

There was another, longer pause.

"Matthew... this is the last time I'm going to ask. Please come home."
"I... I... I'm sorry..."

There was a sigh, then a click. I returned to my drink.

Minutes passed, then hours as time seemed to accelerate. I'd finished off a fourth bottle and killed two hours staring at the walls by the time I resolved to head home. I paid my tab and stumbled towards the door. Largely unfamiliar with alcohol, perhaps it would've been better not to drink so much. I entered my car and placed the key in the ignition on the third attempt. Realizing what was going on, I took the key back out, set it in the cup holder, and let myself doze off.

10:00 PM
Phoenix, AZ

I awoke to a pounding headache.

Groggily, I tried to clear my head and remembered where I was. I checked my phone and found no new messages. I fumbled for the keys and the placed them in the ignition, this time on the first try. The drive home felt like an hour, but it was only 10:15 when I pulled into the driveway. I placed the car in park and stepped out, walking around it and heading for the front door. I located the house key and unlocked the front door. It opened with a creak, and I headed inside, feeling for the light switch with my right hand. I found and flipped it, illuminating the front hallway. My head ached and I squinted, waiting for my eyes to adjust to the light. I eventually was able to look up.

Above me, straddling the doorway leading from the hallway to the kitchen, was a banner.

"Happy Birthday, Matt!"

I turned the light off again and walked upstairs, falling onto an empty bed and drifting to sleep.

Series Preview: Washington Nationals (22-34) vs. Honolulu Gunmen (31-25)
June 2nd-4th

Key Players:

Austin Kearns - RF
.328, 6 HR, 40 RBI
3, D, C, D, D, C, C, Throwing 4, Consistency 4, Gd Rain, Durability 2, Slugger, Aggressive FLD, Gd Eye
Bio: A steady producer, if nothing more, the 28-year old right fielder is one of the better players in this weak Nationals lineup.
Analysis: Kearns is having a career year through 56 games, on pace for 17 home runs and 116 RBI, all while potentially competing for a batting title.

Reed Johnson - 1B
.297, 9 HR, 34 RBI
3, D, B, E, E, E, D, Gd Pinch HTR, Gd Rain, Pull Hitter, VS Lefty 1, Consistency 2, Patient HTR, Aggressive FLD, Gd Eye
Bio: While Reed is a solid hitter, inconsistency and an inability to hit lefties hinder his value.
Analysis: Reed is leading the Nationals in home runs, but that's not saying a whole lot.

Christian Guzman - SS
.302, 4 HR, 28 RBI, 6 SB
3, D, D, B, F, C, B, Spray Hitter, Tough Runner, Timely Whiff, Patient HTR
Bio: At age 30, Guzman doesn't figure to improve his average hitting much further, but he's still a solid shortstop and lead off man.
Analysis: Guzman's having a pretty good year batting lead off for the Nats, hitting .302 and swiping six bases in the first two months of the season.

Projected Pitching Match-ups:

Game 1
Akinori Otsuka (3-2, 5.33) vs. Shawn Hill (2-1, 6.11)

Game 2
Johnny Rivera (1-3, 4.67) vs. John Lannan (2-2, 3.77)

Game 3
Michael Davis (5-0, 3.81) vs. Tim Redding (1-6, 5.55)

Honolulu Gunmen (33-26) vs. Colorado Rockies (31-28)
June 6th-8th

Key Players:

Ubaldo Jimenez - SP
5-2, 3.02 ERA
98, E, B, CB(1), CHG(4)
Bio: After posting a 4.22 ERA in 89.2 innings from 2013-2014, Ubaldo has now earned a starting spot at the age of 24.
Analysis: In his first year as a full-time starter, Jimenez has impressed, going 5-2 with a 3.02 ERA. He wasn't expected by anyone to be the team's ace, but he has been so far.

Garrett Atkins - 3B
.366, 10 HR, 34 RBI
3, C, B, D, C, D, C, Contact Hitter, Gd IF HTR, Firstball HTR, Bases Clearer, Throwing 2, Consistency 2, Error Prone, Pr Rain, Cautious STL, Gd Eye
Bio: Tough a piss-poor fielder, Atkins' hitting abilities have earned him a spot as an everyday player for the Rockies.
Analysis: Atkins is having a fantastic year at the plate. He's leading the Rockies in home runs, and he's currently second in the NL in batting average, behind Arizona left fielder Eric Byrnes (.385).

Todd Helton - 1B

Bio: The best fielding first baseman in the game and one of the better hitters, Todd Helton remains the focal point of the Rockies lineup.
Analysis:While he's seen a drop in power numbers at age 34, Helton's hitting for a high average and his defense is fantastic as ever.

Projected Pitching Match-ups:

Game 1
Cesario Castillo (3-5, 3.71) vs. Jason Hirsh (3-5, 6.29)

Game 2
Charlie Huff (5-2, 3.08) vs. Jeff Francis (6-4, 3.67)

I know, right?

McCarthy has been ridiculously hot really since the beginning of May. It's insane.

Bio: 10th-year pro Randy Wolf entered 2015 with a career ERA of 4.25 after eight years with the Phillies and one with the Dodgers. He's not flashy by any means, but he gets the job done.
