Washington Nationals (10-5) @ New York Mets (8-6)

April 16, 2008: The Nationals beat the division rival Mets today, with a come from behind win. They started out surrendering the first run of the game in the 2nd inning, when Ryan Church hit an RBI single. In the 4th, Carlos Beltran hit a solo homer, and made it 2-0, Mets. Another homer by Beltran in the 6th made it 3-0. The bats finally came to life in the 7th, when Nick Johnson stroked a 2 run homer to center, making it 2-3. The 8th inning would prove to be a good one for the Nats, as Lopez, Smoove, and Johnson all got RBI singles, giving the Nats a 5-3 lead. Cordero got the save, and the Nationals would win. The Nationals will have to keep playing well against the Mets, if they want to win the division.

Chicago Cubs (9-14) @ Washington Nationals (16-8)

April 25, 2008: The Nationals won again, in an extra inning thriller, over the struggling Cubs. The game started off looking like it would be a bore, as the only run through the first 5 innings was on a Nick Johnson RBI single in the first, to give the Nats a 1-0 lead. The 6th inning is where the real action started. Mark DeRosa got an RBI double to tie the game at 1, then Soto got an RBI single to give the Cubs a 2-1 lead. In the 7th, Ramirez got an RBI double, and made it 3-1, Cubs. Lo Duca got that run back in the bottom half, on an RBI single. In the 8th, Zimmerman took the lead back for the Nats, with a clutch 2 RBI single, to make it 4-3. Cordero came on for the save, but ended up blowing it for the first time this season. Derek Lee hit a 3 run homer, to give the Cubs a 6-4 edge. The Nationals looked to be in trouble, with the 7-8-9 batters due up for the inning. Pena flew out, but Lo Duca singled. That brought up Cordero, who was taken out for Dmitri Young, who hit a 2 run homer to tie the game at 6-6! The game went into extras then. With no action in the 10th, the Nationals threatened in the 11th. Runners were on the corners, with 1 out for Chris Smoove. He hit a 3 run homer to right field, for a game winning walk off homer! So even though they blew 2 leads, the Nats were still able to win.

April Review

The Nationals surged to a hot start, and nobody saw them coming. They have the 2nd best record in baseball at 18-10, and are only behind the Yankees. In the division, the Nats have a 1.5 game lead over the Mets. Even though the Nats are ahead, they are 2-3 against the Mets this year. They will have to improve that record to win the division. For awards, Nick Johnson won player of the month, and Chris Smoove won the rookie of the month award. Chuck Norris is off to a hot start, with a 4-1 record, 2.53 ERA, and he leads in strikeouts with 52. The rest of the staff is struggling, and the second man in the rotation, Odalis Perez, is 1-5. The team ERA is 5.04, which manager Chuck Norris says it will come down as guys pitch more innings. On offense, Chris Smoove leads the league in the doubles and RBI categories. Nick Johnson is second in batting average, at .410, behind only Jack Wilson of the Pirates. The team is undefeated when scoring the first run. Chuck Norris says it is very important to get a lead in the game, as the bullpen has been solid this season, so far. Closer Chad Cordero has 8 saves, in 9 opportunities. His only blown save ended up in a win. So, here is to another good month for the Nationals!
