LOLOL THIS LOG IS INCAPABLE OF DEATH
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5-23-08
Sacramento Slayers 2 - Syracuse Falcons 3
SUMMARY: It was a good pitchers' duel between two talented teams. Jair Jurrjens did well, while Falcons #5 starter Tommy Treanor unfortunately managed to outpitch him. Mike Morse kicked off the scoring in the top of the 4th with a double to left-center field. The Falcons would tie the game up in the bottom of the fifth thanks to an RBI single by young right fielder Jake Lewis, and would take the lead in the same inning via another RBI single, this one coming off the bat of shortstop Samuel Tolar. The Falcons would go on to score one more in that inning, for a total of 3 runs. It would be the only blemish in Jurrjens' start, but unfortunately, it was too big of one for the Slayers to overcome, despite their best efforts in the bottom of the 9th. Tommy Treanor went 8.1 innings for his 5th win of the season, and Brent Cannon used his superb curveball to get the last 2 outs and earn the save, his 9th of the season.
Sacramento Slayers 2 - Syracuse Falcons 1
SUMMARY: Yet another pitcher's duel, this one even more in favor of the pitcher and also with a different end result. It was an unexpected one, as Sanchez admitted he was feeling ill before the game and Falcons starter Masato Araki had an ERA over 11 coming into the game. Nevertheless, it was to be. Anyways, surprisingly, the Falcons were the first team to score, thanks to an RBI bloop single by Araki in the bottom of the 4th, scoring first baseman Adam Renner. Nobody would cross the plate until the top of the 8th, when Zobrist hit a game-tying double to left-center, scoring pinch-hitter Kevin Millar from second. Kent Collier closed out the game for his first save of the season.
This game had 26 hits in it. The result? Only 3 runs. This can be partially attributed to the fact that 5 double plays were turned.
Kevin Millar got his first career out and hold today. Yay!
The Slayers look to take the series tomorrow. Hopefully the offense wakes up a little.
I'm bedridden today, so because of that and the fact that the PS2 is in my room, I'll likely finish the rest of the month unless the PS2 acts up again.
This means Power Rankings.
(Note: This is a promise I am making that actually has the capacity to be fulfilled :P)
I'll agree on the second point, not the first. I'm sure after Millar recorded his first career hold, he could be heard saying "GOT HEEEEEEMMMM!". :)
Sacramento Slayers 2 - Syracuse Falcons 6
SUMMARY: The Slayers lose the game, and the series, on this warm Sunday afternoon. Marcum pitched better than his stat line advertises, but nonetheless, it wasn't good enough. Things started out fine in the top of the first, when Lind drove in Molina with an RBI double for the first run of the game. BUT, in the bottom of the 4th, the Falcons would strike. Second baseman Reinaldo Guzman, who scored the go-ahead run in Friday's ballgame, poked an RBI single to left field which drove in first baseman Adam Renner and left fielder Randall Bush. The Falcons would deliver the death strike in the bottom of the fifth, where third baseman Blake Dorsey hit a high fastball from Marcum into the left field seats for a 3-run shot, giving the Falcons a 5-1 lead. They would score one more run, in the 6th inning to be exact, for good measure. Falcons starter Reggie Thompson showed his veteran craftiness by going 8 innings, while getting tons of flyouts. He trusted star center fielder Evan Moseley to get to all these fly balls, and Moseley did not disappoint. He ended up having 9 putouts for the game. Brent Cannon finished off the game, but did not earn a save.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (5/19 - 5/25) ANNOUNCED
For the American League, the players of the week are:
Sheriffs SS Dominic McNichol, who hit .441, with 2 HR and 13 RBI.
Hatchlings RF Alex Moyer, who hit .538, with 1 HR and 13 RBI.
Now for the National League:
Outlaws 3B Ethan Comsby, who hit .630, with 2 HR and 9 RBI.
Dragons 3B Alex Warner, who hit .600, with 2 HR and 9 RBI.
Kudos to all the winners!
Also, a blockbuster deal happened on Sunday the 25th. It goes as such:
Squirrels receive:
RP Jeffrey Scanderbeg (96 TOP SPD, B CTRL, E STAM, 2SFB 2, SLD 4, SLV 3, CB 2, FORK 5; 1-3, 4.42), age 24
Dragons receive:
SP Steven Graham (94 TOP SPD, B CTRL, A STAM, 2SFB 2, SLV 4, CCHG 2, SNK 5; 3-4, 6.00), age 29
RP Ricky Torres (95 TOP SPD, B CTRL, E STAM, 2SFB 2, CUT 5, SLV 5, FORK 4, SIFB 4; 2-1, 5.63), age 31
To be frank, the Squirrels were screwed over in this trade. Sure, Scanderbeg is younger and may have slightly better stats, but Graham and especially Torres have the stuff to bounce back. If it was a 1-for-1 trade for either of the two players, perhaps my opinion wouldn't be as strong. But alas, it was not like that, and now the Dragons' awful pitching staff receives a boost.
UPCOMING SERIES
Sacramento Slayers (33-18) vs Phoenix Cobras (24-26)
Even after a series loss to the Falcons, the Slayers still are tied with the Felines for the best record in the NL. They are also 8.5 games ahead of the Cobras, who are a talented team looking to get on track. Here's a look at the Cobras players we need to look out for:
Keaton McBride, 2B, #3, R/R, 29 years old
3 TRJ, A CON, B PWR, B RUN SPD, B ARM STR, A FLD, B E RES
GM REPORT: He's down to .452 now. This constitutes a slump for the immensely talented McBride, so we're looking to get that average even lower. He's at a PGL-leading 94 hits, so a good series could push him over the century mark in that category.
Brian Johnson, RF, #9, R/R, 26 years old
2 TRJ, B CON, F PWR, C RUN SPD, C ARM STR, D FLD, C E RES
GM REPORT: Johnson has been one of the better #8 hitters in baseball. In fact, he is second on the Cobras in batting average, with a .345 clip. What can I say, the man knows how to get hits.
Connor DeJesus, RP, #43, R/R, 33 years old
101 TOP SPD, D CTRL, E STAM, 2SFB 2, DCB 5
GM REPORT: The fireballing DeJesus, normally a reliever, will be starting Game 1 of the series. He probably won't go more than 3-4 innings, but we might see him again in Game 3. He's the most talented starter we'll be facing in this series, but he is not without his share of weaknesses. He does not pitch well to lefties, and he breaks down with runners in scoring position.
PROJECTED PITCHING MATCHUP:
Game 1: C.J. Wilson (5-0, 2.59) vs. C. DeJesus (1-1, 4.98)
Game 2: B. Morrow (2-1, 4.37) vs. A. Stanridge (2-5, 8.30)
Game 3: J. Jurrjens (4-2, 2.71) vs. Adam Burkhart (95 TOP SPD, B CTRL, A STAM, 2SFB 2, SCB 5, SPLT 3, CHG 2; 7-1, 2.94)
This series is the last of their road trip. They'll be at home for the final series of the month, against another division rival.
Sacramento Slayers 3 - Phoenix Cobras 2
SUMMARY: A great victory for the Slayers today over their division rival Phoenix Cobras. It was a rollercoaster of a game, with some late-inning excitement. Cobras center fielder Alex White kicked off the scoring into left field with a solo homer that went directly into Panpaka's famous Lucky Pocket, which is quite a rarity. The Slayers would tie the game up in the top of the 7th with Mike Morse grounding into a double play with runners on the corners, scoring Adam Lind. However, the lead quickly evaporated in the bottom of that very inning, when Cobras left fielder Vance Griffin took C.J. Wilson deep for a 472-foot solo shot to the deepest part of the ballpark. The Slayers were not to be counted out though, and in the top of the 9th, after Jose Bautista tripled off veteran closer Fritz Fudd, Lind hit a sac fly to tie the game up at 2. The Cobras elected to leave Fudd in to pitch the 10th, and it was a regrettable decision, as pinch hitter Kevin Millar got heem for a go-ahead RBI single, scoring Jeff Francoeur. Brian Wilson closed the game out for his league-leading 17th save on the season.
Sacramento Slayers 4 - Phoenix Cobras 5
SUMMARY: This was a very tough loss for the Slayers to swallow, as they had an early lead that they could just not manage to hold on to. They got said lead in the top of the first, when Guillermo Molina led off the game with a double, Ben Zobrist singled him in, Jose Bautista doubled Zobrist in, and Mike Morse singled Bautista in, for a grand total of 3 runs. The Cobras would put a dent in that lead in the bottom of the second, when pitcher Alan Stanridge doubled over Morse's head to score shortstop Morris Stevens and right fielder Brian Johnson. It was pretty uneventful until the bottom of the 6th, when after Mike Morse committed an error, left fielder Vance Griffin doubled to left center to tie the game up at 3. Johnson drove him in with a single to left field, knocking Slayers starter Brandon Morrow out of the game. The Cobras would tack on one more in the inning to make it 5-3, with all 3 runs scoring with 2 outs. They wouldn't look back from there, as Stanridge earned his 3rd win of the season and closer Fritz Fudd earned his 7th save.
A surprising note regarding this series: Star 2B Keaton McBride has been virtually nonexistent at the plate in these two games, going 0-8. He has still been valuable as a fielder, but the Cobras still need him to come around if they expect to win the series.
