Sacramento Slayers 3 - Columbus Senators 0

SUMMARY: Today's game was all about Jair Jurrjens. Jurrjens absolutely shut down the Senators offense en route to a complete game shutout victory. Senators starter Brent Cannon was also effective, but one bad inning, the 4th to be exact, did him in. Cannon allowed the Slayers' only 3 runs in that inning, which was capped off by a 2-run blast by Jose Bautista, his 20th of the year. Cannon earned his 6th loss of the season, and Jurrjens earned his 4th win of the season.

Sacramento Slayers 0 - Columbus Senators 6

SUMMARY: It was another shutout today, however, this one was at the hands of the Senators unlike yesterday. Senators starter Shawn King pitched amazing, going 8.1 shutout innings before he would eventually be lifted. The only run he needed came in the top of the first, when center fielder Donnie James singled to right field, scoring right fielder Brian Turner who just beat the throw from Jeff Francoeur. The Senators scored 2 more in the top of the 2nd, 1 run in the 5th, and 2 runs in the 7th en route to a very easy victory over the Slayers.

Sacramento Slayers 4 - Columbus Senators 3

SUMMARY: The Slayers take the series today in a great come-from-behind victory. Anibal Sanchez pitched a very good game, taking a perfecto into the 4th. However, after a single by shortstop Albert Benson, first baseman Jared Young launched a 2-run missile into right-center field for the first runs of the ballgame. The homer was Young's AL-leading 16th of the season. The Senators would score 1 more in the top of the 6th before the Slayers offense would put it together with a 3-run 6th inning, which included a game-tying 2-run double by Jeff Francoeur, scoring Lind and Morse. In the very next inning, with 2 outs and a runner on 2nd, Ben Zobrist doubled to left-center off of Trevor Adams, giving the Slayers a 4-3 lead. As you can see, that would end up being the final score. Brian Wilson recorded yet another save, his 16th of the season.

UPCOMING SERIES

Sacramento Slayers (29-16) vs Salt Lake Sting (17-28)

The Slayers currently have the 3rd best record in the Majors right now, 2 games back between the Felines and Rhinos, who are tied at a 31-14 clip. If all goes well, they could move up those ranks. To help with that, here's the Sting players to look out for:

Austin Grant, C, #14, R/R, 25 years old
3 TRJ, C CON, B PWR, C RUN SPD, B ARM STR, C FLD, D E RES
GM REPORT: Grant's regressed a bit since the last time we faced him, but he is still the Sting's best offensive force this season. That is always something to keep in mind when facing him.

Robin Holmes, SP, #67, L/R, 29 years old
96 TOP SPD, B CTRL, A STAM, Lv 2 2SFB, Lv 5 SLD, Lv 6 SLV
GM REPORT: We saw Holmes in the earlier series, and this time out, Holmes should pitch a better game. He is a free agent after the season, and the Sting is out of contention, so Holmes is pitching to both get noticed by a contender and earn a very lucrative contract. How he handles the Slayers could greatly factor in to this.

Milton Sheppard, SS, #46, R/R, 34 years old
3 TRJ, D CON, B PWR, E RUN SPD, C ARM STR, C FLD, C E RES
GM REPORT: When I use the term "watch out for," it doesn't always apply to good hitters. Sheppard is the prime example here. His batting average is a whopping .147, lowest in the PGL among qualifiers. By .023 points. His OPS is only .019 points better than the highest batting average in the PGL. So why am I including him in here? Well, mainly for shits and giggles, but also because he is an okay hitter against lefties. Sheppard could end up being a surprise contributor in games 1 and 2, when the Sting go up against lefties J.P. Howell and C.J. Wilson.

PROJECTED PITCHING MATCHUP:

Game 1: J.P. Howell (1-0, 3.70) vs. Korey Sullo (92 TOP SPD, D CTRL, B STAM, Lv 2 KNCB, Lv 1 CHG, Lv 3 SNK; 3-4, 6.10)
Game 2: C.J. Wilson (5-0, 2.75) vs. W. Hall (1-2, 11.2)
Game 3: B. Morrow (1-1, 4.35) vs. R. Holmes (1-2, 3.81)

A note from around the league: Hatchlings ace Jameel Cook is leading the PGL in all of the pitching triple crown categories. He has a chance to win both the AL MVP and Pitcher of the Year award like that one Zoolander or whatever guy did back when the MLB still existed 90-someodd years ago.

Sacramento Slayers 9 - Salt Lake Sting 4

SUMMARY: The Slayers get off to a good start in the series, winning the first game by a total of 9-4. They struck first in the top of the first thanks to back-to-back homers by Ben Zobrist and Jose Bautista. The Sting would get one back in the bottom of the same inning and then they would tie it up in the bottom of the third thanks to an Austin Grant homer. Both teams would each score 1 run in the 4th to make it a 3-3 tie. The Sting took the lead in the bottom of the 6th, thanks to a solo blast by center fielder Marcos Martinez off of Joba Chamberlain. However, the Slayers would answer back in the following inning like they do so often. Jeff Francoeur kicked off the inning with a leadoff triple, and Adam Jones would hit a sac fly to bring him in and tie it at 4. Martin Prado, the next batter, hit a no-doubter to left field which gave the Slayers the lead and ended up being the decisive run of the game. The Slayers tacked on 1 more in the 7th and 3 more in the next 2 innings, leading to the victory.

The Sting got on the board in the bottom of the with a homer of their own from slumping shortstop Milton Sheppard. The scoring started in the top of the first, where Jose Bautista hit his PGL-leading 23rd homer. The Slayers struck again in the top of the 2nd with an RBI single by Martin Prado, scoring Adam Jones. They would go on to score one more in the 3rd and 2 in the 5th. In the top of the 6th, Ben Zobrist blew the game wide open with a 3-run blast to right field, his 9th of the season. The homer gave the Slayers a 9-1 lead, and it was all smooth sailing from there en route to the sweep of the last-place Sting.

UPCOMING SERIES

Sacramento Slayers (32-16) vs Syracuse Falcons (24-23)

After the series with the Sting, the Slayers are now tied with the Felines for best record in the NL and 2nd-best record in the PGL. However, this is no time to get complacent, as they face a Falcons team that has heated up over the past month. Here are some of their players we need to watch out for in this series:

Evan Moseley, CF, #51, R/R, 27 years old
3 TRJ, B CON, B PWR, B RUN SPD, B ARM STR, A FLD, C E RES
GM REPORT: Moseley is definitely the most valuable, if not most talented, center fielder in baseball. He still has 5 years left until free agency, and he's getting paid the league minimum. That coupled with the fact that he's hitting .416 with 17 HR and 81 RBI make him arguably the biggest bargain in the entire league.

Randall Bush, LF, #15, R/L, 34 years old
4 TRJ, D CON, A PWR, E RUN SPD, C ARM STR, D FLD, D E RES
GM REPORT: With all of Moseley's successes, he is aided by the fact that he has this slugging vet hitting two spots behind him. In the last year of his contract, his .360/14/69 stat line is setting him up very well for when free agency comes a-knocking.

Brent Cannon, CL, #29, R/R, 27 years old
101 TOP SPD, E CTRL, D STAM, Lv 2 2SFB, Lv 5 H-SLD, Lv 6 DCB
GM REPORT: Like his older brother Rich, who plays for the Sheriffs, Brent can throw some serious heat. Unfortunately for him, he has control issues, just like Rich. What separates the two brothers apart is 1) their roles (Rich is a starter), and 2) their stuff. Brent has some nasty breaking pitches to complement his heat, which would make him the perfect closer. Unfortunately, Brent has struggled with mental issues (which is weird for a cyborg, but I digress) this season, which has resulted in a 5.70 ERA. If the Falcons can get some save situations, look for Brent to dominate in his home park.

PROJECTED PITCHING MATCHUP:

Game 1: J. Jurrjens (4-1, 2.63) vs. Tommy Treanor (93 TOP SPD, G CTRL, B STAM, Lv 4 SLD, Lv 2 SCB, Lv 1 CHG; 4-3, 6.54)
Game 2: A. Sanchez (4-3, 4.11) vs. Masato Araki (93 TOP SPD, B CTRL, A STAM, Lv 2 SLV, Lv 2 CHG, Lv 4 H-SHU; 5-4, 11.4)
Game 3: S. Marcum (5-3, 4.77) vs. Reggie Thompson (90 TOP SPD, D CTRL, A STAM, Lv 1 SLD, Lv 1 CB, Lv 1 SNK; 3-4, 11.6)

Around the League: Two pitchers have eclipsed the 100-K plateau already this season. As you might have guessed, they were Jameel Cook and Shaun Valle, aces for the Hatchlings and Raiders, respectively. Cook stands at 107, while Valle is at exactly 100. Kudos to these talented gentlemen.
