Kansas City Royals (40-54) @ Cleveland Indians (49-45)
July 14, 2009

CLEVELAND -- The Royals lost a tough one today to the Indians in a game that they should have won. This game was scoreless until the seventh inning, when finally, Felipe Lopez jacked a solo blast to left for a 1-0 Royals lead. He was followed immediately by a solo shot by Mark Teahen. Later in that same inning, Miguel Olivo jacked a three-run shot to make this game 5-0 Royals. They got this one in the bag, right? Wrong. The Indians stormed back in the eighth with five of their own against Meche who was just cruising until this point. Victor Martinez hit an RBI double, and Casey Blake got an RBI single to make it 5-2. Now there were two outs at this point. Jhonny Peralta hit a hard ground ball to Felipe Lopez. Now, instead of throwing to first for the out, he tossed to second for the force out, expecting Pena to be there. He wasn't. The ball went into left field and the inning continued. After that play, the Indians scored three more on three straight RBI singles by Jamey Carroll, Shin-Soo Choo, and Grady Sizemore to tie the game. And finally, in the bottom of the ninth with one out, Victor Martinez batting righty against the left Mahay, hit a ball deep to the opposite field in right field, and barely over the right field fence for a walk-off home run.

Wow... that really SUCKED! Definitely one of the worst games I've ever played. I honestly thought I had that one. And I've learned my lesson. Just throw to first. I normally just throw to second if it's a short toss, but this was a REALLY hard hit ball, and Pena just wasn't there yet.

2009 MLB All-Star Game
Busch Stadium

ST. LOUIS -- For the first time since 1996, the National League has prevailed in the All-Star Game, and in epic fashion. The AL scored first in the fourth with a three-run blast from Jorge Posada. Carlos Beltran got an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth, but Frank Thomas got that run back for the AL with his own so shot in the fifth. Alfonso Soriano tied it all up in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run shot, and Carlos Beltran followed him with a solo shot to take the lead, going back-to-back. Alex Rodgriguez tied it up in the sixth with a bases loaded sac fly to right to bring home a run, and Manny Ramirez gave the AL the lead once again in the eighth with a solo shot. Now, Francisco Rodriguez comes in to pitch the ninth. He got Mike Cameron out to start the inning, then gave up a hit to Miguel Tejada. Rollins came in as a pinch runner. K-Rod then got Brian McCann out, and then it was the pitchers spot. Dunn came to the plate as the pinch hitter, and sure enough, he hit a high fly ball to right for a pinch-hit, come-from-behind, walk-off home run.

Guillen is angry that he is second in home run count behind Teahan, but he is happy to be leading RBI's, even though he has three less homers. He will work harder to take the team's homerun title in the second half.

July in Review

The month of July was not a good one for the Kansas City Royals. They went 8-17, and are now 44-63 overall on the season. They are obviously in last place, fifteen games back in the division, and third worst overall in the majors ahead of just the Rangers and Padres. Once again, they had a terrible offensive month, only able to score a total of 61 runs. The pitching improved, unfortunately as the offense worsened. Division leaders around the majors are the Yankees in the AL east, the Indians and Tigers tied in the AL Central, and the Mariners in the AL West, a game ahead of the Angels. In the NL East, the Mets and Marlins are still tied at the top, but that division is incredibly tight with only four games separating the leader and the fifth place team, the Nationals. In the NL Central, the Reds lead by quite a large margin. And in the NL West, the Rockies lead, with the Dodgers and Diamondbacks right on their tail. If the season continues the way it is for the Royals, it may be one of the worst seasons they ever have.

Kansas City Royals (44-63) @ Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (54-53)
August 1, 2009

ANAHEIM -- The Royals beat the Angels today in a long, extra innings affair. The Angels got an early lead with three straight extra base hits. Figgins lead off with a triple. He was followed with a triple by Maicer Izturis to make it 1-0, and he was followed by Bobby Abreu with an RBI double to make it 2-0. This game would stay 2-0 until the eighth when Tony Pena got the Royals on the board with an RBI double. The Royals then got two in the ninth with RBI hits by John Buck and Ross Gload to take a 3-2 lead. Soria came in to close it out in the bottom of the inning, but he blew it on the first batter as Casey Kotchman went yard to tie the game -- extra innings. Finally, in the twelfth, the Royals scored. Ross Gload hit a ball high and deep to right, and missed a home run by just inches. He hit it so hard, he had to settle for a very long single. Then with Billy Butler batting, Ross Gload took off for second, Butler swung at the pitch and pulled it down the left field line for an RBI double, a successful hit and run. John Finegan came in to close out the twelfth. He ran in to trouble giving up a double to Gary Matthews, Jr, but the Angels were no match for his knuckleball.
