(83-35) Eagles vs Blue Jays (48-70): Game 2

In what has been somewhat of a recurring theme recently, we witnessed another intense showdown between the two hurlers on the mound. Blue Jays' wins leader Jesse Litsch (8-7) and the 12-2 Matt Moore would encounter each other and runs scored were slim. There were a combined 9 hits between the two teams, and there were some scoring chances but none would come to fruition until the 7th inning. Matt Moore was tossing a no-hitter while Litsch had been pulled by the 6th for set-up man Evan Crawford, despite only allowing 5 runners on base. The top of the 7th opened with an Evan Longoria walk (still no HR #160), a single by Mike Trout which caused Longo to be out on his way to 2nd, then an Andre Zieno 2B which advanced Trout to third. Mike Saunders grounded out, which scored Mike Trout, then Brandon Phillips was the final out, leaving the score at 1-0. Matt Moore had gained some support, but wasn't out of the woods yet. Travis Hafner broke up the no-hitter with a 1-out single but Mike Baxter was forced into a double play to end the 8th. Luis Perez (94/D/D, 3.05 ERA) was the third Jays pitcher of the day - he joined in the 9th and kept the Eagles to 1 run, while Matt Moore awaited the opportunity for the complete game shutout. Things got dicey as Jeff Mathis singled, Rajai Davis pinch-ran and stole second, Michael Bourn hit a 1-out 1B and also stole second, and finally Kelly Johnson worked out a walk. Chris Sale arrived to save the game for Moore and did just that, getting power hitter Jose Bautista to ground out.

Player of the Game: M.Moore - Pitched no-hitter into 8th inning

(84-35) Eagles vs Blue Jays (48-71): Game 3

Yet again in this series of 3, NJ simply overmatched Toronto's pitching. Although in the last two the Blue Jays' staff has only given up 4 runs total, they've fallen and been swept out due to disappointing hitting. In just the first inning, King Felix was provided all the runs he needed. Five singles (by Phillips/Pence/Davis/Olt/Trout) off of Brett Cecil led to a three-run advantage for Hernandez. Felix went on to give up just 4 hits while amassing 12 strikeouts and 2 walks in an excellent complete-game shutout. With the victory, we're an embarrassing 14-1 vs the Blue Jays this year.

Player of the Game: F.Hernandez - Threw a CG, 4-hit, shutout

Final Score:
Eagles: 3
Blue Jays: 0

W - F.Hernandez (17-3) | L - Cecil (1-6)

B.Phillips: 2-5, R, SO

L.Perez: 3 IP, 4 H, 1 K, 1 ER
Eckleman: 1 2/3 IP, 3 H, 1 SO, 0 ER

-------------------------------------------------------
I'm probably going to up the difficulty when I play in games (from Expert to All-Star; I've played on All-Star a few times) - they've been good but I win too often. Same goes for simming but that's not really something I can affect.

(85-35) Eagles vs Red Sox (43-77): Series Preview (8-17/8-19)

Image VS. Image

The Red Sox faced us less than a week ago, and since that meeting, they've won 2 and lost 4. At 43 games back, they're mathematically eliminated from the playoffs and should receive a quite high draft pick. It's our second home series in a row, and we've had the home field advantage in both of the last two times we've faced off.

Boston's pitchers have amassed a 5.05 ERA, not too much different from before, though they've given up 9 more home runs in 6 games since. A note about their hitting is that it still is struggling - just one homer hit since August 10th.

When reviewing the roster, there isn't anything unlike earlier. The main thing I've noticed is that Johnny Cueto has lowered his earned run average from 4.61 to 4.35 while collecting a win to push his record to 7-10. In addition to him, C Jarrod "Salty" Saltalamacchia is batting .306 with 13 homers, 61 RBIs, and 33 XBH in 120 games played. 1B James Loney is doing decent - .236, 11 HR, and 57 RBIs. SU Mark Melancon has pitched to a poor 7.42 ERA in 47.1 IP with 1/5 saves and 43 games pitched. Clay Buchholz (96/D/B) is 3-6 with a 7.20 ERA in 60 innings of work. OF Scott Podsednik has hit .310 in 120 games with 4 HR, 36 RBI, and 10 bases stolen.

While we're looking over the BoSox roster, let's check up on some of the lesser-known prospects on the team. Rookie P Tollberg (90/E/C) has a 6.10 ERA and is 2-1 in his 31 IP. Fellow rookie P Cappuro (89/D/C) shares an average of around 6 runs, plus he's gone 1-6 in 54 innings pitched. Closer Rhiner Cruz (98/D/E) has exceeded expectations in his first opportunity in the role - 47.1 IP, 2.85 ERA, 3/14 SV, 8 HLD. 2012 draftee P Sears (94/F/C) is 1-3 with a 4.08 ERA in almost 30 innings. 2015 draftee P Crabtree (84/G/D) is an interesting case - he's received 39 innings even though he has bad control and low fastball speed - and predictably he's at a 6.00 ERA with 1/4 saves and an 0-3 record.

Due to two wins and one loss in their last 3 at Fenway, their record there on the season is now 18-39. Much to the chagrin of an already saddened Sox fanbase, August hasn't been very nice to Boston as of late - the team is 3-7 in their last 10 games.

The first of this three-game set will see Clayton Kershaw against Oliver Perez (90/D/C, 3-5, 5.55 ERA). The second will be wily vet Cliff Lee facing Clayton Mortensen (93/D/C, 3-5, 4.28 ERA), who impressed last time we confronted him. Finally, Game 3 will be either Sean Haynes or Chris Sale (in place of the currently-tired rotation) who will take on youngster Crabtree.

(85-35) Eagles vs Red Sox (43-77): Game 1

NJ's recent streak of exceptional starts from its staff persisted in the first game of this three-game set vs the lowly Red Sox. Lefties Clayton Kershaw and Oliver Perez drew the start for their respective clubs. The game was in its infancy and yet the Eagles struck first blood. In the 1st, Blake Carter doubled with 2 outs and Chris Davis bashed his 20th homer of the season 436 ft. to center field. The 2-run shot would not be countered by the Sox until much later, after the Eagles had already padded on to their lead. The third came around and a series of singles were followed by an Brandon Phillips RBI single of his own. Hunter Pence was next and bopped a 3-run homer 429 ft. over the Green Monster, his 15th in 2016. A 6-0 advantage for the away team would stand for a bit but Boston crept back into the game in the 6th inning. Kershaw had been dealing with not much trouble and Ivan DeJesus began the rally with a ground rule double over the right field wall. Jacoby Ellsbury grounded out and DeJesus moved on to 3rd, then Jason Repko brought him in with a single. The Sox got on the scoreboard, but after another single (by Freddy Sanchez), James Loney was struck out and Salty grounded out to end the brief comeback. Not much headway was made after that, besides a Jesus Guzman big fly in the bottom of the 9th. With the win, we're 6-1 vs the Red Sox and we've won 10 consecutive games. Also, we've gained a magic number to clinch the division - 20 games away!

Player of the Game: Kershaw - Pitched a complete game

Final Score:
Red Sox: 2
Eagles: 6

W - Kershaw (15-4)| L - O.Perez (3-6)
HR: J.Guzman (9), C.Davis (20), Pence (15)
-----------------------------------------------
Image
B.Phillips: 1-4, RBI, R
C.Davis: 1-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R
Pence: 3-4, HR, 3 RBI
Trout: 2-4
Kershaw: 9 IP, 11 H, 7 K, 2 ER

-----------------------------------------------
Image
Repko: 3-4, RBI
Loney: 2-4, SO
J.Guzman: 1-4, HR, RBI, SO
I.DeJesus: 2-4, 2B, 3B, R
O.Perez: 3 IP, 6 H, 0 K, 6 ER, 2 HR
Cappuro: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 K, 0 ER

-----------------------------------------------
This was my first game on All-Star, hopefully I get a better challenge next time out. Maybe against a better team - let's be honest, the Sox are terrible this year.

Two more Red Sox games (surprisingly close), Players of the Week, and a preview for the next series is coming up in the latest update.

(86-35) Eagles vs Red Sox (43-78): Game 2

Our ever-lasting win streak came to an end here in the middle of August. And of anyone to do it, I'm incredulous as to the fact that it was the last-place BoSox. It's not to say that this wasn't an entertaining battle, actually it was somewhat of a nail-biter. The Red Sox were ahead by the 2nd inning, when Jesus Guzman would drive in Jarrod Saltalamacchia with a 2-out single. Jason Repko began his run of singles in this one that carried over to Game 3. We turned it around in the 4th, as Mike Olt tapped the ball for an RBI single and Chris Davis crossed the plate. Cliff Lee and Clayton Mortensen stranded any runs for a few frames, but it wasn't long before the Eagles secured the lead. Chris Davis cranked a 2-out HR in the 6th, his 21st of the season - while also collecting his 75th RBI. Lee should be credited for protecting the lead even with the Red Sox threatening to tie it up once more. Reliever Craig Breslow (93/C/E, 3.71 ERA) joined in this heated battle, hoping his offense would get the advantage and he could sustain it. There were 0s on both sides of the scoreboard but it would change in the final inning. Jason Repko notched his third base knock of the day with a 1B, Freddy Sanchez hit one of his own (Tony Campana pinch-ran), James Loney reached base (Harold Garcia took his place on the basepaths), and then it was catcher Salty who kept the ball rolling with the fourth consecutive single. The speedy Tony Campana scored to make it 2-2, and fellow outfielder Jordan Schafer was aboard with a one-bagger - however Salty was a force out at 2nd and Harold Garcia ran his way to 3rd. Jesus Guzman stepped up to the plate and put the ball into the outfield for the walk-off hit. The Red Sox had good cause to celebrate as they had played spoiler and brought their record against us up to 2-6.

Player of the Game: J.Guzman - Got the walk-off hit to win it

(86-36) Eagles vs Red Sox (44-78): Game 3

Normally, the Red Sox find themselves on the wrong side of a blowout - that's how it's pretty much been since 2012. The Sox fans have been treated to some better play in this three-game series. There was nothing of note that happened for the first inning except that OF Jason Repko prolonged his run of hits from Game 2 - he's red-hot right now. The events unfolded in the 2nd, when backup backstop Andre Zieno singled in Evan Longoria. The 1-0 edge would be kept by Chris Sale, who had shown some good stuff to start, up to the 5th. Jacoby Ellsbury, who hadn't made too much of an impact over the last two games, was the one who instigated some offense, connecting with a single to score fleet-footed Scott Podsednik. The NJ batters returned the favor an inning after, when Dustin Ackley smacked in a run off of Craig Breslow. It remained 2-2 with both clubs trying but not coming through with any added runs. Even rookie Crabtree dished it out for 5 1/3, and only had two tallies against him. For the second time in two days, the decision came down to the 9th inning. Despite his remarkable outing (which lowered his ERA to 1.37) Chris Sale gave way to left-hander Glen Perkins (98/C/D, 2.49 ERA) by the 7th, who went on to strike out the side. The Eagles remained quiet 'till the top of the 9th. Mark Melancon allowed an RBI 1B to Hunter Pence after a Chris Davis 2-out double. He uncorked a wild pitch, Pence advanced, and Ryan Zimmerman slugged a single. The 4-2 lead was decisive as Perkins retired the 3 Sox batters in the bottom half of the 9th, and any hopes of the Sox winning this series faded.

Player of the Game: Pence - Hit go-ahead RBI single + Perkins - Pitched 3 shutout innings of relief

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (Aug. 13 to Aug. 19)

August is winding down, and we're looking forward to September. Perhaps some rookies will make an impact and find their name on this list! Let's see who is in our third week of month 5 in the 2016 season.

C Kelly Shoppach has hit admirably for his new team, batting .545 with 5 bombs and 15 ribbies for the Miami Marlins. On the opposite of the diamond, former Tiger and current Brewers SP Charlie Furbush has racked up 18 Ks with a win and no runs given up.

ImageImage

The AL's standouts are Twins SS Trevor Plouffe, who had a statline of .400/3/11, plus Eagles SP Felix Hernandez - he picked up a win and struck out 12.

ImageImage

Who's due to break out in the final week before September call-ups? We're headed down the stretch and there's bound to be some exciting contributors for their teams. Join us next time and we'll check out the MLB's best.

(87-36) Eagles vs Tigers (61-62): Series Preview (8/20-8/22)

Image VS. Image

We've been away for 2 straight series and after participating at Fenway and Rogers Centre, it feels good to be home. We welcome Detroit to Rainbow Beach in NJ, and it's safe to say that the outlook coming into a meeting between these teams would've been a lot different back in 2012. An expansion team vs a juggernaut would certainly have favored the Tigers back then, but as we all know, there's been quite a lot that's changed. As we venture into this 3-game set towards the end of August, why not look in-depth at a team and a roster we haven't seen all season.

The Tigers are in 3rd place at one game under .500, down 12 games in the AL Central. They're behind the 2nd place White Sox (66-57, 7 GB) and the current division leader Indians (73-50).

Their team ERA is at 4.69, with the least amount of homers (91) and runs allowed (533) out of the 5 teams in their division. The pitching has given up 1031 hits total, struck out 951, and walked 411. On the other hand, they bat .281 as a team, have scored 649 runs, collected 1260 hits (tied for 1st in the AL Central), stolen 138 bags (most in the division by 11), and hit 96 HRs (almost last in the Central).

Next, let's check up on Detroit's roster and how they've fared stat-wise in 2016:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SP Verlander (100/B/A) - 140 IP, 4.24 ERA, 10-5, 2 SHO, 3 CG, *174 K, .221 BAA, 14 QS
SP Sabathia (96/B/A) - *140.1 IP, 4.81 ERA, 9-7, 2 SHO, 4 CG, 158 K, 13 QS
SP Scherzer (97/D/B) - 82 IP, 3.95 ERA, 4-6, 1 CG, 44 K
SP A.Sanchez (94/C/B) - 124.2 IP, 4.40 ERA, 6-9, 2 SHO, 2 CG, 106 K
SP Fister (92/C/B) - 77 IP, 5.24 ERA, 8-3, 2 CG
CL Alburquerque (98/C/E) - 37.2 IP, 3.58 ERA, 2-1, 17/18 SV, 47 K, .194 BAA
MR Wesson (86/E/C, rookie) - 19 IP, 3.32 ERA, 1-0, 21 K
MR L.Marte (93/D/E) - 31.1 IP, 1.72 ERA, 1-0, 34 K
SU Schlereth (95/D/E) - 52.2 IP, 6.66 ERA, 3-3, 12 HLD, 47 K
SU Oviedo (97/C/E) - 54.2 IP, 7.41 ERA, 1-6, 7 HLD, 51 K
MR Motte (98/C/E) - 45.1 IP, 5.96 ERA, 3-4, 4/9 SV, 3 HLD, 36 K

1B Fielder (D/A/E/E/E/D) - 123 G, *.388, 15 2B, 19 HR, 90 RBI, 65 BB, 34 XBH
3B M.Cabrera (B/A/E/D/D/D) - 123 G, .326 (leads with 145 H), 25 2B, 4 3B, *25 HR, 103 RBI, 12 HBP, 12 SB, 54 XBH
SS/3B/2B Matsubara (C/F/B/B/C/B, 4 yrs. pro) - 123 G, .298, *31 2B, *20 3B, 4 HR, 73 RBI, 11 SH, 12 SB, *55 XBH
2B/SS/3B Worth (D/E/C/C/D/D) - 123 G, .295, 9 2B, 6 HR, 58 RBI, 9 SB
OF A.Jackson (B/D/A/D/B/B) - 123 G, .256, 26 2B, 13 3B, 4 HR, 55 RBI, *95 R, *39 SB
OF C.Gomez (D/E/A/C/B/C) - 123 G, .275, 24 2B, 6 3B, 6 HR, 53 RBI, 58 R, 18 SB, 36 XBH

*leads team
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Tigers are 25-28 when playing at Comerica Park, and 36-34 while on the road. Against the NL/AL Central, they are an even 25-25. Versus the American League in general, Detroit is at 54-51. They have a 7-3 record in their last 10, with their highest win streak topping out at 7 and their longest string of losses lasting 6 games. With 39 games left, their chances of making a comeback and being competitive are slim.

The opener is Brooks vs Scherzer, followed by Game 2, which could see Sean Haynes spot-start vs Anibal Sanchez. The possible rubber game - Game 3 - will involve Matt Moore of the Eagles and reliever Collin Balester (95/D/D; 72 IP, 4.24 ERA, 2-1, 2 HLD) entering a starting role as opposed to his normal role in long relief.

Just had an insane Game 1 against the Tigers. Let's just say, they don't deserve the record they have right now. Whew.

Simming Game 2 right now, they could both be up tonight and if not then probably tomorrow.

(87-36) Eagles vs Tigers (61-62): Game 1

Twas a slugfest on this day at Rainbow Beach - August 20th in the 2016 season. The Tigers provided the most competition this team has faced, I believe, since I began writing in this diary - uh..I mean journal. Detroit drew first blood in this back-and-forth, see-saw affair. It was only the top of the 1st but three straight singles resulted in an RBI for Miggy, then a Prince double play scored a run to make it 2-0. While I was a bit alarmed that Andrew Brooks had been slapped around so early, I kept in mind that my team is prone to scoring in bunches especially when we're in need of a comeback. Mike Trout gave me some assurance in the 2nd by reaching base with a 1-out single, followed by a Chris Davis flyout, and finally, Blake Carter crushed a 2-run bomb 406 ft. to center field - his 28th of the season. The game was knotted up at 2-2 but not for long. NJ fired more ammunition in the 2nd - Zimmerman singled, and after a Longo injury scare, Francisco Cervelli smashed a dinger of his own to right, his 5th of this year. The Tigers would not back down, however, the 3rd saw Austin Jackson double and Chomei Matusbara hit an RBI single. 3-3 was then the score but Manny Machado interrupted it with a first-pitch blast to left to kick off the bottom of the 3rd inning. His 2nd homer of the year was succeeded by singles by Chris Davis, Blake Carter, Hunter Pence, and Ryan Zimmerman - who picked up the RBI. The Eagles now had a 5-3 advantage which stayed put 'till the 5th, when the Tigers threatened. Danny Worth, Ichiro, and Austin Jackson got on and the former two were knocked in by the white-hot Matsubara. Miguel Cabrera contributed with the second RBI double in a row by his team and it paved the way for Joakim Soria (96/B/E, 1.72 ERA) to be inserted in place of Brooks and try and clean up the mess. He did just that, allowing only a Prince Fielder single before the frame was over. The damage was done - Detroit was ahead 7-5. To their credit, the guys persevered - reliever Juan Oviedo was touched up in the 6th by a Longo 2-out one-bagger, and yet another big fly from catcher Cervelli (his 6th of 2016). Daniel Schlereth entered in and held the score to a 7-7 draw. Chris Price was the next man out of the relief corps to arrive (in the 7th), locking down the Motor City Kitties for the first of his 3 innings of work. The deadlock was broken in the other side of the 7th inning stretch - Chris Davis doubled while Manny Machado and Blake Carter slugged their respective 2nd bombs of the day (3rd and 29th) - and we were once again in the lead, this time at 10-7. Detroit cut down the deficit in the 8th, when Gerald Laird singled, he was moved to 2nd by a Worth groundout, and Ichiro drove him home with a single. Fireballer Jason Motte made for the 3rd pitcher change of the game for the Tigers, but he was promptly victimized by a Longoria solo shot (his 23rd - which brings his career total to 149) as well as a Trout RBI single after a double by Manny Machado. The lead was now extended to 4 runs and we were headed to the 9th. Chris Price remained in the ballgame despite a shaky 8th, and was able to throw his way out of a jam. Prince lead off with a single but was out while running to second on a Ronny Cedeno 1B. Carlos Gomez was the third consecutive batter to reach first, but Cedeno was also out while trying to advance. Gerald Laird made for the fourth straight single but the deciding out was when Carlos Gomez took the risk of running to 3rd from 1st base. He was tagged out by Mike Olt and finally this crazy shootout had come to its finale.

(88-36) Eagles vs Tigers (61-63): Game 2

The second game of this three-game tilt was fairly tame in comparison to the wild opener. New Jersey was fast and furious to get the offense going as usual. The bottom of the 1st started with a Michael Saunders 1-out 1B and then a RBI 2B from heavy-hitter Chris Davis. Evan Longoria smacked a double also to make it 2-0 for the hometown team. Big man Prince Fielder got the Tigers on the scoreboard with a first-pitch bomb a half-inning later. Swingman Haynes dodged any further hurting and we escaped with a slight edge. By the 5th inning, the Eagles had a higher leg up on our opponent. Four singles in a row resulted in RBIs on the stat sheet of Zimmerman and Longoria, and then Andre Zieno chipped in with a sac hit that scored a run. That would be all with the exception of a 7th inning solo HR by Miguel Cabrera (26). Sean Haynes once again showed off his upside and that he's very capable of being a major league starter with a reputable 6 innings of work. Glen Perkins made the 3-inning save to back it up.

Player of the Game: C.Davis - Went 3-5 with an RBI and 2 R

Final Score:
Tigers: 2
Eagles: 4

That he is, Zero. I didn't put him in that post because he's been underperforming right now. He's at E/E/F/B/B/C with a .250/3/22 stat line in 60 games.

My next series preview is coming up as the 3rd and final Tigers game is complete and will be added soon.
