Latos and Blanks are both very happy with their final stats, and hope they can both play a big part in the postseason.

whoops I messed up the pitchers stats a little. Latos and Richard had better ERA's and Garland had more wins so I edited it

National League Division Series Preview - San Diego Padres vs New York Mets

Image Image

The Padres have celebrated for the last 3 days over their one-game playoff win and their surprise march to the postseason but it's time to see if they can get by the best team in the National League in 2008, the New York Mets. The Mets boasted the best offense in the NL leading the league in home runs and runs scored with 903 overall. Their offense is extremely powerful with Francouer(38), Bay(30), Jacobs(31), Beltran(38) and Wright(29) having big power years while guys like Reyes and Castillo ran rampart on the bases stealing a combined 81 bases. Their pitching was a little more shaky. Johan Santana was dominant this season where in 203 innings he went 18-8 with a 3.43 ERA but after that it goes well downhill in the rotation with Maine, Perez, Escobar and Pelfrey and for whatever reason they will Santana as the ace in the hole this series as they send out Maine first. The bullpen was solid this season with guys like Matt Wise(3.76), rookie draft pick Fullmer(2.84 ERA in 44.1 IP), Sean Green(3.00 ERA), Bobby Parnell(2.38 ERA), Jorge Sosa(4.16) having good seasons and then they have Fransisco Rodriguez as they great closer as he converted 37/39 save attempts with a 2.13 ERA so this isn't a pushover bullpen anymore. The weirdest stat of the day is the Mets are just 40-41 at gome but are an outstanding 56-25 road team which makes it important for the Padres to win 2 games in New York before coming back to San Diego for a POTENTIAL game 4 and/or 5. The Padres managed to go 3-4 against the Mets but were swept at home against them while at Petco Park the Friars took 3 of 4. So who will win out? The Padres pitching or the Mets bombers.

Down Below are the rotations:

San Diego Padres
SP - Hill: 13-9, 3.88 ERA (Game 1 SP)
SP - Young: 8-8, 3.91 ERA
SP - Garland : 11-8, 4.58 ERA
SP - Latos: 12-8, 4.03 ERA
SP - Richard: 11-9, 4.58 ERA

New York Mets
SP - Johan Santana: 18-7, 3.43 ERA
SP - Oliver Perez: 12-5, 4.31 ERA
SP - John Maine: 9-8, 4.68 ERA (Game 1 SP)
SP - Mike Pelfrey: 8-12, 5.51 ERA
SP - Kelvim Escobar: 9-8, 5.59 ERA

National League Division Series Game One

Heart of Mets lineup prevails as New York takes Game one

October 5 -- The Mets won the first game of this best of 5 series with the Padres 5-2. Rich Hill and John Maine were both very good today and through the 1st six innings there was only 1 combined run and it was a solo shot by Mike Jacobs in the 3rd inning to make it 1-0. In the top of the 7th the Padres scored their first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Scott Hairston to make it 1-1. But in the bottom of the 7th the Mets were able to get to Hill who gave up a solo home run to Jason Bay to make it 2-1 and then an RBI single by Mike Jacobs, his 2nd RBI of the day, to make it 3-1. They would add on two more in the 8th with a 2-run double for David Wright off of Ryan Webb for a 5-1 lead. The Padres got something going in the bottom of the 9th down 5-1, they had runners on the corners and 1 out when Nick Hundley flew out deep to the right field track for a sacrifice fly which made it 5-2 but that would not be enough as the Mets would take the series opener by that score.

I've been reading this log since a little before the All-Star game. I hope you get past the Mets!

Gonzalez comes through big in the 6th to tie series

October 6 -- The Padres tied the series at 1-1 with the Mets with a big home run by the MLB home run leader Gonzalez. The Mets took a 1-0 lead against Game 2 starter Jon Garland in the 1st inning on an RBI single by David Wright, his 3rd NLDS RBI, to make it 1-0. The Mets then took a 3-0 lead in the 4th inning on Jason Bay's 2nd homer of the series, a 2-run shot to make it a 3-run game. 3 runs seemed insurmountable considering the Padres offense has been somewhat lifeless but they got a spark in the 5th inning when Scott Hairston hit a solo home run to make it a 3-1 game. In the top of the 6th, Oliver Perez became wild and walked 2 men in the inning and then trailed in the count 3-1 to Gonzalez. Gonzalez would then hit a 3-run home run about 5 feet past the right center field wall for a 3-run shot which turned the game around making it 4-3 Padres. The Padres would hold on to their first lead of the series as Stauffer worked a scoreless 7th, LeBlanc a scoreless 8th and then Bell worked a scoreless 9th after giving up a walk to Beltran getting a big double play off the bat of Wright to take away an chance of a rally.
