Thanks, Paul.

I anticipate I'll get out the Sox game at some point today, just don't know when.

(79-35) Eagles vs Red Sox (41-73): Game 1

The first game of this series saw the first offense come from yet another big hit by Chris Davis. It came in the form of a solo homer in our half of the 2nd - which he drove deep into the left field stands. Up 1-0, Clayton Kershaw kept the Sox offense down until a Jarrod Saltalamacchia solo home run on a mistake curveball. Boston wasn't done though, as Jason Repko knocked in a run in the 5th. Our guys were prepared to strike back and man, did they. Multiple singles then a 3-run bomb by Chris Davis added up to a 5-run outburst in the 6th. Vet Nelson Figueroa had to come in to weather the damage let up by starter Daniel Bard. Another run was brought in via a 5th Chris Davis RBI during the 7th and young lefty reliever Crabtree (84/G/D, 6.44 ERA) was next in line for relief. Meanwhile, Kershaw held the Red Sox to a 7-2 deficit, before leaving due to fatigue in the 8th. He gave way to Jonny Venters who went on to allow a Jesus Guzman RBI single in the top of the 8th. Our lead was cut to 4 but it was enough for us to close the door and take Game 1.

Player of the Game: Chris Davis - Knocked in 5 of the team's 7 runs with 2 HRs, 2 doubles

Final Score:
Red Sox: 3
Eagles: 7

(80-35) Eagles vs Red Sox (41-74): Game 2

Wow. That's about all that's needed to be said about this effort by rookie SP Sean Haynes today against the BoSox. He pitched a delight in front of the hometown fans at Rainbow Beach Stadium. It wouldn't be an Eagles game if there wasn't some exciting offense, though. It started up with a 5-hit, 5 run onslaught by NJ in the bottom of the 1st. Mike Trout doubled, Blake Carter singled, and then Hunter Pence contributed with a single to bring home the young center-fielder and get the Eagles on the board. Next was the power bat of 1B Chris Davis who slammed a three-run homer (his 19th), and allowed both Pence and Carter to score in the process. Zimmerman kept the hot streak going with a three-bagger and was rewarded with a sac-hit by Dustin Ackley (his first of two for the day). The party ended via a Mike Olt pop-out, but young Red Sox P Capurro was never the same. With a 5-0 lead leaving him nothing to worry about, rookie Sean Haynes pitched masterfully for the rest of the game. One of the only blips was in the 4th when Jacoby Ellsbury ended Haynes' perfect game by drawing a walk - only to watch his teammates strike out for 3 straight outs. Mike Trout did more damage in the 5th with a solo shot (his 4th home run) and sent Capurro to the showers. That left rookie left-hander Tollberg (90/E/C, 6.91 ERA) to clean up the mess, and he did well in holding down the Eagles in 3 and 2/3 innings of work. A duel between rookie hurlers ensued, with both sides retiring the opposing batters 1-2-3 multiple times. It got tense in the final inning - Sean Haynes kept a no-hitter going with a walk keeping him from a perfect game. Ivan DeJesus spoiled it with a 1-out single against a tired Haynes. Jason Repko singled for the second hit for Boston but that was all as Haynes secured the win by getting Freddy Sanchez to ground out. The team is now 81-35 and on a 5 game winning streak.

Player of the Game: Haynes - Had a no-hitter through 9 innings + C.Davis - Hit his 19th HR in the 1st inning

Final Score:
Red Sox: 0
Eagles: 6

W - Haynes (3-2) | L - Capurro (1-6)
HR: Trout (4), C.Davis (19)
-----------------------------------------------

Trout: 2-4, 2B, HR, 2 R, RBI
C.Davis: 1-4, HR, 3 RBI

Capurro: 4 1/3 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 2 HR

(81-35) Eagles vs Red Sox (41-75): Game 3

The exceptional pitching by the Eagles' starters carried over into Game 3 - but the Red Sox' fortunes from their staff turned for the better, in the unlikely form of SP Clayton Mortensen. He was asked the task of challenging ace Cliff Lee and was certainly up to it. They battled back and forth all afternoon, with both offenses mustering up some hits but nothing coming out of it. The deadlock was broken when Dustin Ackley knocked home Evan Longoria. Longo had reached base with a 1-out single and was moved over by a Ryan Zimmerman double. The 1-0 score would remain the same, and despite Clayton Mortensen's solid performance, Boston failed to capitalize on the opportunities with runners on base. Cliff Lee, although he scattered 5 hits in 9 innings, managed a complete shutout. He was simply the better man in this outing.

Player of the Game: C.Lee - Pitched a CG shutout + Ackley - Scored the winning run with 2B in 7th

Final Score:
Red Sox: 0
Eagles: 1

W - C.Lee (12-5) | L - Mortensen (3-5)
HR: None
-----------------------------------------------
Image
Pence: 2-4
Longoria: 1-3, R
Zim: 1-3, 2B
Ackley: 1-3, 2B, RBI
C.Lee: 9 IP, 5 H, 4 K, 0 ER

-----------------------------------------------

Saltalamacchia: 1-3
Podsednik: 2-3
I. DeJesus: 1-3
Mortensen: 7 2/3 IP, 6 H, 1 K, 1 ER
Melancon: 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 ER

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (Aug. 6 to Aug. 12)

Another week in the MLB goes by and we're heading down the homestretch towards the playoffs. Who's impressed here in this second week of August?

Pitcher Jered Weaver has enjoyed the move from one L.A. team to the next, throwing his way to 2 wins and 13 Ks for the Dodgers, while outfielder Alex Presley surprised the Pirates by batting .417 with 10 RBIs.

Image Image

On the AL side, we saw young pitcher Sean Haynes represented the Eagles, picking up 2 wins and 8 strikeouts, plus Dan Haren, pitcher for the Angels, collected a win, save, and 18 strikeouts this week.

Image

That's all we've got, stay tuned for more top player performances.

(76-35) Eagles vs Blue Jays (48-69): Series Preview (8/14-8/16)

Image VS. Image

Not much has changed since we faced the Jays for three from the 6th-8th, but this time we head up to the Rogers Centre as the road team.

Toronto has lost 6 in a row, the complete opposite of us, and they're sitting at 4th place. Their team average has dropped a bit to .265 from .269 and they remain near the middle stats-wise in the AL East. The Blue Jays' pitching has improved a tad, lowering their combined ERA from 5.23 to 5.18, but they're not terrible when the division is made up of staffs that are around the 4.00-5.00 area.

Ricky Romero (95/D/A) is still the most notable starter yet his earned run average remains quite high (5.70) and his record has not changed from 5-10. Jesse Litsch (92/D/B), meanwhile, somehow has the most wins at 8-7 in 91.2 innings but has only allowed slightly less hits - a 5.50 ERA in his 18 games pitched.

Jose Bautista (D/B/D/B/D/D) has seen his average decrease as he hasn't brought in any runs or hit any HRs since we last saw him. Brett Lawrie (B/B/C/C/D/B) has increased his batting average a few points up to .303 by hitting a couple homers and gaining a few ribbies.

Besides them, there's been some ups and down for the Jays' sluggers but for the most part their statsheets are similar. Their poor pitching continues to weigh them down because they've had consistently good production from the main hitters. Their lineup hasn't changed from last time either so we know the others - EE, Michael Bourn, Kelly Johnson, etc.

Toronto has split 3 games at home and 3 on the road in their last 2 series, dropping all 6 games. The home record for them drops to 21-32.

They've lost 8 of their last 10 while being swept out twice as of late (once by us). While Canada's MLB team is down on their luck, I'm sure they're thirsty for revenge. The talent's there but unfortunately for them, they haven't put it together to field a winning team.

We'll send out sidearmer Andrew Brooks to go against Aaron Laffey for Game 1, then it'll be Matt Moore vs Jesse Litsch in the second game. Finally, it'll be ace King Felix opposed by Toronto's Brett Cecil in the final game.

(82-35) Eagles vs Blue Jays (48-69): Game 1

The slumping Jays put up a fight in the first of this three-game series at the Rogers Centre. It was almost as if they weren't 34 games out of the division lead. Things were quiet from both teams, 'till the 4th when Evan Longoria blasted a 2-run homer 465 ft. down the left field line. The bomb counted for the 23rd this season as well as the 159th total in his career, and the star 3B wasn't the only one gazing in awe as the ball launched into the seats, just barely staying fair. While that was truly a sight to see (and I'm sure his 160th will be as well), the focus went to Toronto as they rallied later in the 6th. Andrew Brooks cruised through the first five and probably didn't take the Blue Jays' offense seriously enough - as we know they have some bats in there that could threaten - and he paid for it by giving up a 3-run home run to Edwin Encarnacion with Kelly Johnson and Jose Bautista on base. Luckily for us, we had Chris Davis as our secret weapon, taking the day off until he pitched in with a pinch-hit, 2-run HR an inning later. Off the first pitch, it went 413 ft. (#20 in 2016) and regained us the lead. Aaron Laffey pitched decent but his days were numbered with the homer, and so it was SU Evan Crawford (96/D/E, 2.86 ERA) who was second in line. Brooks held his own after his 6th inning mistake but ultimately gave way to Glen Perkins, who pitched the 8th. Blake Carter contributed late, slamming his 28th homer of the year in the top half of the 9th to give us a two-run edge going into the bottom half. Chris Price was given the chance to close it out, replacing Perkins, and retired the side easily.

Player of the Game: C.Davis - Slammed the come-from-behind HR in the 7th

Final Score:
Eagles: 5
Blue Jays: 3

W - Brooks (13-6) | L - Laffey (5-6) | SV - C. Price (1)

More updates to come, likely tonight. I've got Games 2 & 3 of the Blue Jays series done and the preview for the next series - vs. the Red Sox, ready to go.
