Mendenhals Pull Away Late to Win, 5-1

VANCOUVER, B.C., CANADA - The comeback season for the Yankees' Andy Pettite has gone off to a decent start, but he found a bit of a roadblock today: the now 7-2 Vancouver Mendenhals.

The Mens scored 3 times in the 2nd inning, starting with a Derek Wayne RBI single to center, and 2 batters later, a Mitch Anderson sac fly to score Wayne. It would be Anderson's only real solid contact, as he would finish out 0-3. The inning was capped off by a Steve Bernard RBI double.

In complete contrast to Pettite, Mendenhals starter Ian Bannister was very effective today, striking out 7 over 7+ innings, the only blemish being a Curtis Granderson big fly (3) in the 6th. He would run into a bit of trouble in the 8th, as manager Becky Fox tried to have Bannister pitch the 8th, even though he was clearly tired. After a single by Nick Swisher and a double by Raul Ibanez to lead off the frame, she had seen enough, and decided to send in Cy Seville to try to pitch out of a huge jam, the score being 3-1 at that point. He proceeded to get Russell Martin to pop out behind home, Derek Jeter to strike out, and Curtis Granderson to repeat Martin's at-bat to get out of the inning, mainly throwing knuckleballs, which completely baffled the Yanks' hitters.

To add insult to injury in the top of the 9th, Derek Wayne hit a solo HR (1) just over the see-through wall in LF. After him, Scuba Steve hit a fly ball that looked to be going foul, but just eeked into the corner of the left field stands, past replacement LF Melky Mesa's climb-and-jump attempt, for his first HR of the year.

Cy Seville would then pitch a scoreless 9th to end the game.
