I fumbled with my keys momentarily before unlocking the door to my office. Our flight had landed at a little after 11:00, and I had decided to head down to Rainbow Beach to get some work done. This dual-role is going to be the death of me... I thought. I was looking over player stats and reviewing the match-ups for our upcoming series against the Angels when the phone rang. It's nearly midnight, who the hell is calling? I checked the caller ID, but it was an unknown number. I picked up.

"Hello?"
"Hello, Matthew."
I did not recognize the voice.
"Um, who is this?"
The man on the other end chuckled, "What, you don't remember my voice?"
(...Should I?)
"Uh, I have to go..."
"No, hold on a minute, Matthew! It's me, the... owner of the Gunmen."
"I-it is?"
"Yes."
Neither of us spoke.
"...Prove it," I requested.
"How am I expected to do that?" he asked.
"Your name would be a good start."
He laughed again. "You seem a little different, Matthew. Less passive than you were. I like it."
"I don't have time for this-"
"No, wait!" There was a hint of regret in his voice as he admitted, "I-I can't tell you."
"Why the hell not?"
"I can't tell you why, either."
"This is ridiculous."
"No, I can prove it... hold on a second."
I heard some drawers being opened and closed.
"He we go," he said. "Let's see, your salary this year is $432,620 and your contract runs through 2016."
"...I'm still not sure I believe you."
"Okay, here we go. You were hired on September 29th, 2014. The team salary is $49,250,000. Pitching coach Manny Cortés will make $275,000 in 2015. Hitting coach Tim McCarver will make $240,000. Bench coach Stan Ross will make-"
"Okay, fine, I guess I believe you. But can't you just tell me your name?"
"I'm sorry, Matthew, but I can't. I just wanted to call and congratulate you on a great job thus far."
I sighed. "Um, thanks."
"I have to say I was shocked when I saw it in the papers that you had taken the role of manager. You know, you're entitled to more pay..."
"No need for that."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes. I'm already making more than I have in over ten years."
"Ten years... when you were GM for the Diamondbacks?"
"That's right."
Silence.
"Well, I... I need to go, Mr... Mr. Owner, sir."
"Oh, right. Yeah, keep up the good work Matthew."
"I will," I promised.

As long as he develops the relationship fully (which I trust he will) it will be a very emotional, very good update.

I'm going to jump on the prediction front here:

Preston Greene is in all actuality an alien sent from Wirhigiukgion-7, a planet in a different galaxy. His name is really Prhugehuiehd Gdjuenofdjnod. The Wirhigiukgionians happen to look exactly like humans, so that is why the ruler of the planet decided to go through with this experiment.

The pod he was in landed in Roswell, New Mexico. It managed to go unnoticed, surprisingly and so very ironically. He was given exact coordinates to travel to the nearest education facility, which was at Eastern New Mexico University. It was there where he would find Matt Weaver, and the fate of humanity would start to take shape.

In the 4 years they spent together at ENMU, he observed Matt very carefully. From the observations, he had good news to send back to his home planet.

Preston's focus was studying the game of baseball. For it was wherever Matt would go, he would go in order to further his research. He ended up making sure Weaver drafted him so this could happen.

Greene toiled between AA-AAA, losing faith in humanity every step of the way. Once he decided he couldn't play anymore, he convinced Matt to give him an assistant job, where he stayed for 1 year until he was gone once Matt left. He began to lose even more faith, because the Diamondbacks owner was too impatient, and most importantly, he messed up his friend's career.

Greene decided to stay on Earth until Matt's eventual death in 2070, which coincidentally, was the year the MLB was disbanded, though it wasn't voluntary.

The two friends lived next door to each other for the rest of their lives, and Greene observed Weaver every step of the way, from his marriage, his parenthood, and the couple's divorce, which would be ever-fateful. Their paths took a bit of a split when both beings got new jobs working for baseball teams in different states. However, their teams played each other so often that it wasn't really a big deal.

Preston would always act like he showed contempt towards Matt whenever they played each other, but really, that was what he was told humans acted like. It was no fault of his own. Unfortunately, that caused Weaver to trust him less and less, which would be his ultimate demise.

They both worked for their respective teams for 14 years before retiring. After that, they lived pretty peaceful lives.

That is, until that one fateful day in 2041.

Matt just got home from getting the groceries, when he saw a stack of divorce papers lying on the coffee table. Claire walked in and told him, "You know what this means, don't you?" "B-but why...?" Matt staggered on. "W-what did I do?" Claire said, "Nothing, and that's the problem. You're too old now! I'm leaving you for another, younger man. And we'll be eloping to Peru as soon as the divorce is finalized!"

Preston could sense something was wrong. Sensing emotions was his gift, he was the best of his kind at it, and it was part of the reason why he was sent to Earth. He rushed over to Matt's house, where he heard the news. Now, Preston didn't look it on the outside, but that moment, right there, was when he lost all faith in humanity. After encouraging Matt to get through it, he went back home to prepare the plans. What plans, you ask?

The plans to wipe out all the humans on Earth, those plans.

Preston didn't want Matt to have to go through this, so he waited for his death, which would be the last peaceful death any human would experience.

Matt died on June 8, 2070. Preston and all the remaining living Gunmen players went to his funeral.

As Greene left for his home planet to start the plans for the wipeout/new colonization of Earth, he elected to take Matt's casket with him, saying that Matt "was the last great human being on Earth, whose body must be preserved."

On October 16, 2070, the time had come for all humans to be destroyed. Despite their best efforts, they could not ward off the attacks of the superior Wirhigiukgionian beings. All human life had officially been wiped out on earth.

Now, in the skirmish, the Wirhigiukgionian ruler was slain. Due to his leadership qualities, Prhugehuiehd was selected as the newest ruler. His first act was to head the Wirhigiukgionian colonization of Earth. It was a massive success. However, Prhugehuiehd noticed that there was one thing missing on the colony, and it was his favorite hobby while he lived with the humans: baseball.

So, Greene announced plans for a new baseball league, to be called the PGL, and its inaugural season would take place in 2108. Greene then decided that, in order to take advantage of the top-notch Wirhigiukgionian robotics program, all players, managers, and general managers (except for a select few) would be cyborgs.

And then it happened, and he saw it. It was truly golden, and it brought in massive revenue. Organisms from all over the universe flocked in to see PGL games. Greene had solidified himself as the greatest ruler in the history of Wirhigiukgion-7.

And it was all because of the betrayal of one good man.
