May 2008

Although the Pirates finished 12-16 just like last month, the underlying numbers were much better. They scored 128 runs, a drastic improvement, and gave up 122. While that was worse than last month, it was still good enough to put their run differential at +6. LaRoche picked up the pace, hitting five home runs during the month, although Bay slowed down by only hitting one. Currently the Mets are the best team in baseball, and sit EIGHT games ahead of second place, the Detroit Tigers.

If the Season Ended Today...
Playoffs
AL: Tigers vs. Athletics, Blue Jays vs. Royals (WC). Yankees, Red Sox, and Mariners are also contenders.
NL: Mets vs. Diamondbacks, Brewers vs Braves (WC). Cardinals, Giants, and Astros are also contenders.

Draft Order
1. Nationals, 2. Rays, T3. Pirates, T3. Twins, 5. Marlins
6. Phillies, T7. Orioles, T7. Cubs, T7. Indians, 10. White Sox

Notable Trades
May 14: Gregor Blanco, Blaine Boyer ---> Athletics, Rajai Davis ---> Braves
May 22: Mitch Shetter, Randy Choate ---> Red Sox, Chris Carter ---> Brewers
May 25: Alejandro De Aza ---> White Sox, Nick Masset ---> Marlins
May 28: Cole Hamels ---> Angels, Casey Kotchman ---> Phillies

Houston Astros (30-29) @ Pittsburgh Pirates (26-33)
June 4, 2008

Pirates Slug Past Astros

The wind was flying out of the park and so were the baseballs as the Pirates beat the Astros. All of the runs by the Pirates today were due to shots in the bleachers. Sanchez hit a homer to left in the fourth, LaRoche hit a three run bomb into the bullpen in the sixth, and two batters later Bautista launched one into the stands. The Astros scored three runs themselves, but they were all spread out. A run in the first, one in the fifth, and another in the ninth. They just weren't able to string together enough hits to get past Maholm, the the NL Pitcher of the Month in May.

Final Score
Astros: 3
Pirates: 5

W: Maholm (5-1)
SV: Capps (9)
L: Brocail (0-2)
HR: Sanchez (9), LaRoche (8), Bautista (6)

1. McLouth: 0-4
2. Sanchez: 3-4, HR, RBI, 2 R
3. Bay: 1-4. 2B, R
4. LaRoche: 2-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, R
5. Nady: 1-3
6. Bautista: 2-3, 2B, HR, RBI, R
7. Olivo: 1-3
8. Wilson: 0-3
9. Maholm: 1-3
9a. Capps: ---

Maholm: 8 IP, 3 ER, 11 H, 3 K
Capps: 1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K

Draft Day
Cooper Thompson walks into his office wearing his nicest white suit and flips on ESPN, hoping that for just once, they know something he doesn't. They don't. His secretary sticks her head in the door, "Cooper, Mr. Bartlett, Mr. Young and the others are waiting for you down in the conference room." Colton Bartlett is Cooper's right hand man who he goes to for everything. Not necessarily that he'll go with whatever Colton says, but he appreciates the input to help better understand where he should steer the organization. Scott Young is the head scout of the Pirates and has been for the last nine years. Despite all the busts that the Pirates have drafted, Scott had disagreed with every single one before they were picked, the previous GM just decided not to listen to him. As Cooper reaches the meeting room, the clock hits three, signaling only a few hours until the start of the draft.

He goes and stands at the head of the table and poses a question with a small laugh. "So, who are we picking?" Cooper is more of a laid back GM. He's not one of those guys who sits crammed up in a desk all day studying players and stats, that's typically Colton's job. He likes to have a little fun with the job, but he never gets to the point where he goes overboard and just doesn't care anymore. He relies on his scouts and his assistants more than any other GM in the business. He assigns just as much to them as he does to himself, the only difference being he makes the final decisions. They just throw in their knowledge.

Scott speaks up, reading the list of the that they've been looking at. "Over the last five months, we've narrowed down the list of the people we're targeting. Currently we have Altuve, Bumgarner, Feliz, Hundley, Minor, Morrison, Moustakas, Parra, Price, and Stanton." Cooper thanks him with a simple "Nice work!" before moving on. "OK, considering we have the number two pick, we can probably shorten down that list. Colton, who do you think? We probably only need a couple, but choose who you think the top five are." After thinking for a few moments, he rattles off a few names. "Let me see here... Bumgarner, Morrison, Moustakas, Price, and Stanton. Those are probably going to be the first five picks, so we should probably choose from there."

The five names are spread out across a white board with a different scout explaining the strengths and weaknesses of each prospect. After about thirty minutes of explanation and persuasion, Cooper addresses the group. "OK, both of Morrison's positions are currently taken by our best two fielders and there is no other place to play him. So you can take him off the list. And then Moustakas seems like Stanton but at a different position with less power, so he's probably out of the running too. Scott, I need you to check who our fan's are wanting, and Colton, find out who the Rays are thinking of drafting." Scott finds his information within a couple minutes on fan websites and the like. "Currently they are split down the middle between Price and Stanton. They were high on Bumgarner a few months ago, but then he had his meltdown during his last few starts of the season and they're shying away. And they've never really like Moustakas."

After calling a couple people, Colton hangs up the phone and reports the news. "Most everyone thinks that the Rays are leaning towards one of the two pitchers. Their outfield is pretty crowded, plus they have Pena and Longoria playing the corners. Despite our fans not wanting Bumgarner, I think he's our best choice. He has the most upside of the trio" Scott intervenes to give his two cents. "I've gotta disagree with you Colton. Yeah, he may a little higher ceiling than Stanton and Price, but I can think of three reasons why we shouldn't. Number one, he has the highest asking price of the three. He's asking in the 7000 point range, while the other two are thinking more so around 5000. Number two, it's not what our fans want. We need to sell tickets, and picking somebody they don't like isn't gonna help. And number three, he has the lowest floor of the three. The last thing we want is a top draft pick not working out again. With the second pick, his risk extremely outweighs his reward. We don't need another Bryan Bullington! We need to pick Price, he's the obvious answer."

The debate is stopped when over the speakers it is announced that the 2008 MLB Draft has begun. As the scouts wait for the first pick, Colton and Scott each desperately want the Pirates to pick their player. Not because they want to prove the other wrong, but because they want to prove themselves right. A few long minutes later, the pick is announced on the MLB Network. The Rays selected David Price, the left-handed pitcher out of Vanderbilt. Scott hangs his head, knowing that the Pirates are going to end up picking Bumgarner. Cooper stands in front of table and asks, "Is everyone OK with Stanton?" As all the other scouts murmur in agreement, Colton and Scott pop their heads up in shock and bewilderment, wondering how Cooper came to the decision of picking the outfielder.

Even though they are both filled to the brim with questions, they simultaneously ask the same one. "Where is he going to play?" Cooper responds with a shrug and calls into the commissioners office saying that the Pittsburgh Pirates are selecting Giancarlo Stanton, Right Fielder out of Miami. After hanging up the phone, he explained to them why he chose to go with Stanton. "I've been ready to pick Stanton since March. I've known for the last month and a half that the Rays were sold on Price, so it came down to Bumgarner and Stanton. And while Scott, you brought up many excellent points against Bumgarner, my decision came down to the fact that a slugger is a bigger need than an ace right now. As for where he's gonna play, it will definitely be in right field. But if we keep him and Nady in the lineup, we'll have four strikeout prone hitters, so we'll have to do something with that during the off-season."

Colton suddenly realizes something and is quick to ask Cooper. "If you knew all along that you were going to pick Stanton, why'd you make us do all that research!" Scott instantly teams up with Colton and demands an answer. "Well I could say it was so you could find out about all the difficulties and hard work that is needed, or how you learned how to communicate with one another to work out and solve your problems together. But honestly, it's so you can tell the boss what exactly you did, which in turn helps gets me a raise!" He then rushes out and up to his office just as Jason Stark is walking down the hall. Jason pokes his head into the conference room and asks, "Did one of you put something in his coffee again?"

So there you have it! Up to this point almost everything has been recaps and summary's and whatnot, but I decided to mix it up and turn the draft into kind of like a story, and I hope you like it (or at the very least, don't hate it ) For anyone wondering, the rest of the draft picks are below. For the other first rounders and all the second rounders, it is just the regular 'grey-bar' players.

2008 MLB Draft
1. Rays-David Price, SP
2. Pirates-Giancarlo Stanton, RF
3. Royals-Mike Moustakas, 3B
4. Orioles-Madison Bumgarner, SP
5. Giants-Logan Morrison, 1B/LF
6. Marlins-Neftali Feliz, SP/RP
7. White Sox-Jose Altuve, 2B
8. Reds-Mike Minor, SP
9. Astros-Gerardo Parra, LF
10. Nationals-Nick Hundley, C
