April 30, 2009: Padres Lose Last Game of April in Heartbreaking Fashion
The Atlanta Braves salvaged a series split against the Padres in a thrilling comeback victory. Phil Hughes struggled in his first few starts of the season, but he rebounded quite nicely in this one. The Padres' offense started slow, but they eventually put up 2 runs in the fourth. Hughes carried a shutout until the sixth, but he gave up a solo blast to Matt Diaz in the sixth, setting the tone for a comeback. Cla Meredith has been great this season, but he was unable to secure a 4-out save, giving up an RBI-double with two outs in the ninth. Heath Bell was brought on in the tenth, but he could not stop the inspired Atlanta offense, who drove in the game-winning run to secure a series split. With the loss, the Padres fell to 21-7, still an impressive start to the season.

April 2009 Update: Padres Off to Best Month in Team History With .750 Win Percentage
April 2009 was a month to remember for the San Deigo Padres, who took MLB by storm. The team won 21 of their first 28 games, led by a dominant starting pitching staff. Greg Maddux, Chris Young, Jake Peavy, and John Lackey each lead the league in ERA, with sub-2 averages. While this may not be sustainable, it proves that the fearful four are capable of going on a torrid stretch at any point in the season. On the offensive side, they have been led by the surprising Orlando Hudson, who currently carries a .400+ BA and a remarkable 28 stolen bases. If Hudson continues this pace, it will be a historic, near-MVP campaign. Victor Martinez has also been well worth the trade, currently ranking in the top-10 in extra-base hits. After a slow start, Jack Cust seems to be on track for a second consecutive 50 home-run season, which would be a remarkable feat for someone who was once considered a failed prospect after originally leaving San Diego. While Adrian Gonzalez's power numbers have regressed since an incredible 2008, he has still delivered a few clutch extra-base hits, and so his season cannot yet be considered a letdown. The Padres' offense is still at the bottom of the division in terms of runs scored, and so it is imperative for them to continue to improve as pitching regression looms. The Padres are exceeding even the most optimistic expectations and could be on track for a 100-win season.

May 15, 2009: Padres Win Thriller on A-Gon Walkoff Sac-Fly
The Friars continued their unprecedented dominance over the NL West in a thrilling, back-and-forth victory over the Diamondbacks. The win was their 11th of the season against the two-time defending division champs. Jeremiah Borland made his first career start, allowing three runs through five innings in a solid outing. If he pitches like that frequently, he wouldn't be a poor option for the Padres, who still need to stick with a six-man rotation due to a compact schedule. When Borland exited the game, the Padres trailed 3-1, but a massive rally in the fifth gave them a 4-3 lead, capped off by a two-run double from V-Mart. Yet, they weren't in the clear just yet thanks to Conor Jackson's solo home run. Following the tying homer, Kerry Wood was pulled from the game as a precautionary measure due to arm soreness, forcing Mark Prior to enter the game cold. Prior did well considering the circumstances, only allowing an unearned run, serving as a crucial link-up to Cla Meredith. With the team trailing 5-4 in the 7th, Milton Bradley continued his recent tear with a game-tying home run. Cla Meredith did his job like usual, keeping the game tied heading into the tenth. The Friars put runners at the corners with one out for team MVP Adrian Gonzalez, who delivered his second walk-off hit of the season with a sac-fly. With the win, the Padres improved to 32-10, the best start in franchise history. For reference, the 1998 Padres won their 32nd game on their 52nd game, 10 games after the 2009 team. With a 9-game division lead, it is now a question of when and not if the Padres will win the NL West.

Mid-May 2009 Update: Padres 9 Games In Front
The Padres seem to be destined for the 2009 postseason following a six-game winning streak. The streak has been powered by one of the greatest free-agent classes in recent memory. Without Orlando Hudson and Victor Martinez, the team would still be solid, but nowhere near the top of the league. On the pitching side, John Lackey is having a tremendous recovery year. After an ERA over 7 last year, Lackey currently holds a 7-0 record and a 1.54 ERA. Darren Balsley could be a managerial candidate in the near future thanks to his tremendous work with the pitching staff over the past two seasons. At this point last year, the Padres were floundering on a massive losing streak, so 2009 has been quite refreshing. While the pitching staff has been historic, they are showing signs of regression, but the offense has improved to counter that. Adrian Gonzalez struggled to find his footing a bit in the beginning of the year, but he's hit five home runs in May to righten the ship. With the top-4 of Hudson, V-Mart, A-Gon, and Cust, the Padres will be a threat for the foreseeable future.

May 24, 2009: Greg Maddux Ends Losing Streak in Memorable Performance
It was a historic night for Greg Maddux, who cemented his status as an MLB legend with his 3,500th strikeout. Oddly, it started off as one of Maddux's worst performances of the season as he gave up three runs in the first two innings. Like usual though, Maddux settled in for the rest of the evening, and the Cardinals failed to score a single run for the rest of the night. In the seventh, Maddux also showed off at the plate, driving in what turned out to be the game-winning run. It's safe to say that if anyone other than Maddux started today, the Friars would have dropped their sixth straight game. Fortunately, he was on the hill, and the Friars finally got back to their winning ways.

May 31, 2009: Padres Lose Yet Again, Crisis Brewing?
The Padres lost the final game of May, continuing the worrying trend against the non-west National League. While the team is 27-5 in the division, they are now 10-15 outside of it, causing concern that their record is inflated by a weak division. They lost their second series against the Cardinals this month, capped off by a shutout from Chris Carpenter. The Padres led 1-0 early in the last game of the series thanks to an RBI-single from John Lackey, but the Cardinals easily retook the lead thanks to a tying homer from Bill Hall and an RBI double from Albert Pujols. The Padres couldn't strike back, dropping the final game of a rough end to the month. The Padres once held a 9-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers, but that lead has now vanquished to five games. This lead could easily disappear if the Friars continue to struggle throughout June.

May 2009 Update: Odd Month for Friars
The Padres were roaring in the middle of May, pulling off an 8-game winning streak. During the streak, the Friars held their best record in franchise history and seemed to be unstoppable. Yet, this success may be short-lived, since as soon as the NL West-heavy schedule concluded, the team struggled to find success. Currently, they've lost four consecutive series- two against the Mets and two against the Cardinals. These losses can be attributed to some pitching regression as Maddux, Lackey, and Young each had their worst performances of the seasons. Another troublesome trend is the current form of Adrian Gonzalez, who at this point last season had 20 home runs and an OPS over 1.000. This time around, Gonzalez is batting .230 with a sub-.300 OBP, along with a slugging percentage of .451, good for fourth on the team. The Friars' offense is better than it was at this point in 2008, but Gonzalez failing to meet expectations has been an unexpected development. Without the additions of Victor Martinez and Orlando Hudson, the Padres could be in a much more troubling situation, but their performances this year have offset A-Gon's rough patch. With the draft just ten days away, the Padres will look to build some more positive momentum.

June 8, 2009: MLB Draft
Image
After what was considered an underwhelming draft in 2008, the Padres looked to redeem themselves a year later. After a hot September pulled them out of the top-10, the Friars selected 15th in this season's draft. With their first-round pick, the Friars selected Derek MacRae- a center-fielder known more for his acumen in the field. MacRae is still pretty raw, but he has the intangibles to potentially be an option for the future. In the second round, they selected Humberto Mendes, whose ratings are a bit underwhelming. Mendes's strength right now is his stamina, but his control needs to vastly improve if he wants to break into the team's starting rotation. Arguably, the team's best selections came in the middle rounds as they added Thomas Wayne, Jason Blackburn, and Francisco Jaramillo. These players were highly touted in the scouting community and many in the industry were shocked when each fell to the Friars in the middle rounds. With the selections of Blackburn and MacRae, the Padres now have three centerfielders waiting in the wings behind Chris Denorfia, so rumors of a trade involving the current starting centerfielder are not far-fetched. Ultimately, the Padres have not succeeded in the early rounds recently, but thye have found gems in the middle-rounds that may turn out to be the best value picks in the draft.

A solid B at first glance.

I’d definitely put MacRae in batting practice to raise his power and contact, and buy the batting equipment from the shop. 5 star guys improve at a faster rate, especially with equipment.

June 14, 2009: Bullpen Spoils Orlando Hudson's Memorable Night
Orlando Hudson will never forget tonight's performance thanks to his game-tying home run in the 7th. Aside from Hudson, the remainder of the Padres will hope to forget this one as it was another bullpen meltdown. After the Friars reversed Oakland's 2-1 lead, Victor Martinez drove in two with a double, giving the Padres a seemingly comfortable 5-2 lead. Yet, this is no longer the 2008 bullpen, and Cla Meredith and Clay Hensley struggled yet again. Meredith gave up a home run to David Wright in the eighth and Hensley had a horrific performance in the ninth. Hensley did not record a single out while giving up three runs, receiving boos from the Petco Park crowd. With the loss, the Padres fell to 42-27 after holding a record of 32-10 at one point. Their 10-17 record since is definitely a point of concern and rumors are flying that the team is interested in acquiring a reliever and/or a starter in the next month or so. Without any additions, the Padres may choke away what was once a 10-game division lead earlier in the year.

Mid-June 2009 Update: Division Lead Shrinking as Padres Face Bullpen Crisis
In the mid-month update, the Padres led the NL West by 9 games. In this one, they hold a 4-game lead over LA with a pivotal series approaching. This semi-collapse is a result of several factors, the most significant being bullpen regression. Only one reliever, Andrew Brown, carries an ERA below 3. Recently, the Padres have squandered several late leads, including last night against Oakland. While Clay Hensley was a reliable closer last season, he has not had the same results in 2009. Hensley is in the top-5 in the league for saves, but that is mostly due to the team's strong record. His ERA is an acceptable 3.38, but it is carried by a stronger month in May. Cla Meredith is also showing signs of collapsing from potential overuse, carrying the exact same ERA as Hensley. For reference, Hensley carried an ERA of 2.25 at the end of May while Meredith carried an ERA of 3.00. As a result of their struggles, San Diego is rumored to be in the market for another reliever, which could determine the course of their season.

June 22, 2009: Padres Drop Key Rubber Match to Dodgers
The Padres dropped the final game of a significant 3-game series against the Dodgers. Following the series, the Dodgers now trail the Padres by 6 games. San Diego will be rueing the missed opportunity to bury LA almost 10 games behind them as the two will not be meeting for a while. It was another no-show from an inconsistent San Diego offense, who scored no runs despite 8 hits. Jeremiah Borland did all he could, holding the Trolley Dodgers scoreless through 5, but he was roughed up for three runs in the sixth. Hiroki Kuroda was outstanding, limiting damage to a few singles and avoiding high-pressure situations. If the Dodgers would have lost the series, it could have been a devastating blow to their season. Instead, the NL West remains competitive for now.

June 30, 2009: Padres Drop Final Game of Month
After a blowout victory over the Phillies in the first game of the series, the Padres dropped the second game to push the series to even. Chris Young has had a resurgent season, but he ran into some struggles tonight- giving up 3 runs on two home runs in the bottom of the first. Young settled in, but it was too late for the Padres to get a victory. Adrian Gonzalez has been heating up as of late, and his two-run home run brought the Friars within a run of the Phillies. However, Chris Young gave up his fifth run of the game in the sixth and was pulled. The Padres managed to cut the lead down to 1 once again, but they were unable to tie the game. They put on a runner on in the ninth, but Aaron Albion with picked off in a stolen base attempt, ending the chance of a late rally. The Padres are 51-31 past the halfway point of the season with a stronghold in the division, but June was a bumpy month for the team overall.
