you gotta S/L every time you use the gambler's ring.
if you get it and it breaks, S/L.
if you get it, save.
if you don't get it, S/L.
My guys sucked, but then I got a gambler's ring with david wrong, and now my players are actually really good.

yeah oh thanks.......but how do you gamble the effieciently? with this guy, it seemed like i barely made an improvement from my other players while every1 else has nearly maxed out players

just gamble every chance you get.
Personally, for pitchers, I work my breaking balls first, until they're where I want them to be, then I work on control (until it's around C-B) and stamina (D for closers, High B for starters)
Once I reach where I want to be, I spend the rest of the time increasing whatever I feel like increasing.
Also, Sittch's arc is great, as it gives you mentality points that are hard to get otherwise.
The steakhouse arc is great for power/stamina, and by the end of my run with tyrone paige, i was getting 6 stamina per visit. If you're lucky enough to get the arc (i've gotten that far once), you'll have a steak so good, it increases your stamina by 25, which is incredible.
Lucy's arc is useless for hitters, but it's good for pitchers (Dr. K and Intimidator).
Patty's arc is great. You can get many abilities (besides gyroball), and at the end, you get:
Gyroball
Tri Fangs
Glove Wax
Spikes Wax (sell if you're a pitcher)
110 breaking ball points.

I always get a Prince's Necklace and Psychic Goggles.
Finally, use the off time in December and January to do some arcs, like Sittch's. Don't waste your time practicing, your coach and his scouts are in the Bahamas or whatever.
