Okay to compromise let's just make "relief pitchers" and the person importing the players can decide the roles. Who's in for 1st and Second?

I'm sorry, but I'm not willing to compromise. No one else disagrees on this and so far there has been a unanimous agreement that Mariano was without doubt the best. Look through the thread, everyone else has agreed on this. I'm going by majority and therefore he is the closer. Eckersley is most likely the back up. If you want to try to change my mind, I need statistical back up, not just an opionion. Show me with statistics that Eckersley is better but to the best of my knowledge, there is no statistic in which he is better. I'm sure Eckersley would and has agreed that Mariano is the best closer of all time.
Eckersley by the way has a career ERA of 3.50, which Mariano has not had one year (besides his first as a starter) in his whole carrerr. Mariano is just over 2.

Griffey is better than Dimmaggio.
McCovey or Bagwell can be the back-up 1B and What about my middle infield?

1st: Agree
2nd:Disagree
3rd: Honus should be there for sure, I never even heard of those other guys.

DJ agrees with me

And notice the first half of his career he was a starter.

No, that's not true. The first year he was a starter. I'm sorry Lance, but I'm not willing to change this. I agree about Wagner, but second base is a much harder choice.

I'm talking about Eckersly. The guy didn't become a reliever 'til he was 33. The only way in my mind Rivera can top him is if he keeps dominating in his 40s.

I disagree with you cownip about Rivera on the basis of one thing and one thing only. You can't call it a Hall-Of-Famers Expansion team, if they are not in the Hall-Of-Fame; therefore, I think you cannot have players on this team that are still currently playing or recently retired, which would eliminate Rivera and A-Rod. I would argue though that some players that have not been playing in a long time and got shafted on being in the Hall-Of-Fame, but that would be few and far between.

By the way, did you ever see Eckersley or Gossage (not in the Hall-Of-Fame, although I think should be) pitch? Those guys were intimidating when they stepped to the mound. They also had personality which is an intagible that made them great as well.

Rivera will be in the HOF, his numbers are amazing over the 14 years that he has played. By the way, just ask the Diamondbacks if they find him intimidating. His numbers are intimidating, I just don't find him personally that way.

Of course, this is your team, so I think you should define who you want on the team, and if anyone else disagrees with you, so be it. You have asked for opinions and have gotten them. Go ahead and make the roster out and lets get started.

Although, we like to think the numbers don't lie and generally they don't, but there are intangibles that can't be measured that makes a player great as well.

If you wan't to get consensus from this group on a position, just add a pole, let the voters pick from a few great players and then redo the pole for a different player. Everytime you change anything in the poles, the vote counts reset. Or put a ton of players for each position in the pole and let people pick multiple players, but only one from each position. If more than one person votes for a particular position, then there vote doesn't count.

Again, just another opinion!

Good idea. With Mariano, I believe we should make him anyway because he is so underpowered in the game and he is at the end of his career (he announced that in two years when his contract is up, he will definetly retire). A-Rod I'm for but if enough people disagree (which they seem to), I could pass on him. Again, it doesn't hurt to make an extra player for others to make the decision with. With catcher and centerfielder I plan to not choose one as the main position as they are too contraversal but for shortstop and second baseman a vote would be a very good idea. I just want to get a list of 3-5 candiates for each before I put one up and the player with the second-most will be the back-up.
So, for short-stop the choices would definetly include Honus Wagner. Any other top picks?

Isn't that a bit like saying, "just ask Kirk Gibson if he finds Eckersley intimidating."

basically. Other then that and 2004, this guy has been perfect in the World Series. You know a closer is good when he is known more for his successes then his failures. Any other ideas fhor shortstop for the poll?

Thanks Comfy! Way to take away my thunder. That was such an awesome homerun! It was one of those feel good moments, if you weren't an Athletics fan.

Point well taken.

What about Ernie Banks? Mr. Cub. He has great numbers and his best seasons were played as a shortstop before he moved to first base.

What about Ozzie Smith, not the hitting machine but was considered a great fielder?

Or Ironman, Cal Ripken, Jr.?

Even after he retires he needs to wait to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.. Seems kind of silly to have a 'Hall-Of-Famers' Team with players who are not in the Hall of Fame.. How about naming it 'Players That I Like, & Good Players From The Past' Team?

So since we're only doing HOFers then no Roberto Alomar. Nice list though.
