Does anyone know for certain what determines passed ball frequency for a catcher? I am guessing it is FLD, but I am not 100% sure. Maybe it's ERES. Maybe pitcher CTRL is a factor. Here is what I think I know: - Passed balls are fairly a random event for any pitch out of the strikezone (fastball, curve, high, low, just off the black or three feet outside). For example, it does not appear that splitters in the dirt have a higher passed ball percentage than fastballs up and away. - Passed balls are noticeably more frequent when you have a non-catcher playing catcher (you pinch hit for the catcher and forgot to replace the PH with your backup catcher). So, is this a result of having G FLD at the C position or simply being a G catcher overall? I have a bad habit of acquiring the same default catchers (R.Paulino or R.Martin) so I don't have the diverse experience that some you guys have. Curious to hear your thoughts. |

I believe E RES determines passed balls and CTRL determines wild pitches. |

Only time I got a passed ball was when Joey Votto was playing first base for me. Maybe FLD and E RES have a factor in it, but it just seems random at best with a catcher. |

EDIT: According to Wiki (should have looked there first), ERES impacts passed balls. |
