Post subject:  F.A.Q. - Points and New Guy Questions

I just bought MLB Power Pros last week and am enjoying the RPG element of the success mode. I've already completed my first character and wondered, as a geek, just how far I could max a character.

The Top stickied Post discusses blue abilities but, as a new guy, I don't understand the benefit of them. Is there a statistical, or tangible, benefit to a character with Power Hitter, or Contact Hitter, or etc..

On my success guy I tried to save 3 actions for Week 4 practices with the coaches, thus maxxing xp and rep. Is my thinking flawed? Or do you buy a ton of energy bars to peg carryover points giving you the flexibility to both practice and role play? It seems like 2 carryover points is the max per week/turn.

  • Are abilities more important than statistics? (Power/Trj/Con/etc.)
  • What is the point of baseball cards?
  • Can you develop a strong character without practicing a ton?

Thanks for your time.

I found some references to abilities on the site, so I think that clears up some of my questions.

The problem I am finding is that when go to some locations on the site such as the one below.

wiki/index.php?title=Yellow_Attributes&action=edit

I get a 'Permission error' response. This also occurs on the Main Power Pros Wiki site when trying to link to 'Baseball Cards', 'Important Items' and others.

some abilities are really good, like Cannon Arm, Grt/Gd Infield Hitter, Clutch and VS. Lefty, Pivot Man, and Tough Runner, others like Contact/Power Hitter, Tough Out, and the other some of the other hitting abilities aren't too useful

the baseball cards are for your enjoyment (or lack thereof)

only if you do really, really good in games, because if you don't practice the scout's and coach's eval wont increase as much, usually leading to your character getting fired, i'm sure someone could, but only if they do training with Sittch/Frank/Terry, using a lot of wax, and doing good in games.

* Abilities have an almost direct correlation to stats. If you have A in power, you will hit more homers. We still haven't figured out some of the intangible abilites (tough out, etc...) from 2007, so it's still mostly a mystery.
* Baseball cards are just fun unlockables. They're just fun to collect.
* Yes, but you will need to be extremely lucky and S/L a ton, Get lucky with doctor, etc...

Abilities Wiki (this is from 2007 so it doesn't have everything, but it's almost complete): http://www.mlbppworld.com/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Abilities

Thank you for the quick and positive responses. I'll ask one more question that's been confounding me and then I'll stop with the newbieness.

Several roleplaying choices involve people playing Challenge/Yes/No cards. I'd, incorrectly, ASSuMEd that the cards were comparable to baseball cards. So could someone help me out with that little nugget?

Besides that last question I'm off to create my next character. This game fits me perfectly, as I'm a nerd by trade who loves RPG's. But I also enjoy sports. The fact I'm levelling my guy up, using items, and playing baseball just makes this all the more awesome.

Uh, challenge cards were in MLBPP 2007. I don't think they're in 2008.

No worries, there's no such thing as a stupid question.

You need to add MLB Powerpros wiki to your member groups so that you can edit pages on the wiki.

For your first player, I would focus on just getting the stats like power and contact. After you can successfully get a contract to the majors than you can start experimenting to max out characters. Maxing out your character on your first go through would ruin the whole MLB Power Pros experience!

The page is more than likely non-existent (isn't the link red?). You can tell because the link takes you to the edit page rather than the article.

Also, this means you didn't get yourself permission to edit the pages. Read the Signup article to learn how to get edit permissions.

The wiki SHOULD contain the correct values, as a mod will typically troll the site once a day for new changes.

Forum users that heavily contribute SHOULD be putting the info that they found (once it has been confirmed/is general consensus) onto the wiki to keep it up to date.

I thought tough out made you more likely to bowl over the catcher when trying for home.

That has nothing to do with it.

Tough runner is what makes you knock the catcher over.

Tough Out is defined as "Excellent Bat Control"
