Save and Reload.
Save the game, then reload the game and if it doesn't work, reload again.
Also, if you get a surprise bag, save and reload until you get something you want (preferably a gambler's ring, which lets you gamble on ability increases. Save and reload when doing that too.)

There are some good starting guides around here somewhere on how to get Bookworm level to 1 and make some money before you get Coach Stone and you have to practice a lot. Always try to get your Coach Eval high enough that you get in the game the first year. Really it just takes a couple of tries to get good at it. My first few players had Es, Fs, and Gs and now I'm getting all C players without changing much about how I go through it. some depends on luck(What kind of random events and such)but it helps to be good at getting hits when you do play games because that increases experience points. Also don't become captain until year 3.
