I'm wondering how you folks keep your game competitive and difficult.

I have turned off the pitching cursor completely so that I don't know where the ball will be thrown before the pitcher releases it. I have put everything on Powerful difficulty level. I have also put the pitching speed set to Fast. My batting cursor is set to Normal. None of the Best Try or Lock-On crap.

I can hardly muster 2 runs anymore with the difficulty up this high. It's rough but I love the challenge. Even when I put the pitch speed on Normal I STILL find it hard.

I draft players with low abilities. No A's nor B's, except for pitcher's stamina. It's really hard with no good runners.

The key to hitting is to wait for a ball that you like and hit it. If you dont like the ball, pass it. You have at least 3 chances to hit the ball. I personally like curveballs or changeup that breaks anywhere in the middle or sliders that break inside out.

expansion teams.
no dream draft.

as for me, i make the game harder for me to play, rather than the cpu harder to beat.

I don't like the uniforms  that's why I don't play with expansion teams. If you could put something other than a simple letter in the cap...

I do agree with this advice but sometimes with not knowing where the pitch is going to be, and with the pitch speed setting set to "Fast," and the pitcher throws a hard fastball at you, you have to be either guessing correctly where the pitch will be or have really fast reflexes to catch up with that and hit it well. Or perhaps at 25, my gaming skills and reflexes have slipped away from what they used to be.

I can foul them away, sure, but sometimes when I'd rather have hit a foul ball, I pop out to the catcher or manage to ground out weakly to the 2nd baseman.
