HR derby is a good way but for me painfully annoying.

I'd suggest playing a ton of exhibition games, at least 2k points for a win

Brandon Backe is a good player for the HR derby. Also as soon as you can buy local ballpark, get it. Because you can get more points in that stadium because it is so small.

Last year you could just finish your character, not save him, and get the points. You would do this over and over again. This worked much better if you make a hitter (games are faster) and lose the second to last game so you didn't play the long all-star game.
I usually unhook the nun-chuck for the home run derby and just get my timing right. I hate (with a passion) when a ball isn't right down the middle because then its a hard hit ground ball. My timings right again though so I don't have to focus on it and I can focus on aim and use the nun-chuck now. After a quarter year of not touching power pros, I lost my timing.

The fastest way that I seem to get points is to go into season mode and play 5 or more games. I get about 2,000 points per game, and that really adds up.

Play exhibition games. If you play all 9 innings you get over 2000 points I believe and then you can also do home run challenge for points.

Or just do season mode.
