Does anyone know if an ability, or a high stat value wins out if they contradict each other? For example if you create an outfielder with very low arm strength, but give him the Cannon Arm ability.

Cannon Arm only gives you a marginal boost when you have low arm strength. You'll start seeing a real difference once you reach B and A levels. Gold Glover is the same. Skills like these compliment each other so it's best to try and get your stats as high as you can.

Power Hitter on the other hand can make your C power guy hit 20+ HRs while an A power guy without it will get the same.

Contact hitter will make you get solid contact, or more solid than usual when you hit the ball within the cursor regardless of how perfectly you center it and your contact skill. It's always best to boost the skill higher for a bigger cursor though. Combine this with Power Hitter and you've got a dangerous hitter.

So in short. Abilities help but having your skill higher with the ability will give you the most benefit.

Abilities should be considered a % or a + boost to a certain stat, and do not give the player overpowering skills without the stats behind it.

eg. first-pitch hitter simply enlarges the contact zone by a few pixels, if you have A contact, it's massive; F contact, not so much, but an improvement.
