I should have been more specific. These are the boosts I was referring to:

During the winter training period, players will get 25*skill boosts.
All of the 1-15 skills will increase by one point for one boost used.
Batting Power will increase by 5 points for every boost.
Top Speed will increase by 1 mph for each boost.
Breaking balls increase by 1 point for each boost
Stamina and Control increase by 5 points for each boost.

*At least 5 boosts must be used for hitting, and at least 5 for pitching

Jack Caselli put his gift back on the table, and was looking for what to take instead, when Jack noticed that CF Phil Huxley, who rarely spoke to him, was staring at him from across the table.
"That one" said Huxley.
"It's my gift dude." Said Jack, "I'll choose it myself", and was reaching for a gift, when Huxley, who'd just been standing ten feet away, was now right next to him, grabbing Jacks hand.
"You're going to need the other one more" said Huxley.
Jack struggled against Huxley's grip, finally wresting the gift away.
He opened it up, and got ERES +1
"Huh", said Jack.
Just then, Sawamura placed his gift back on the table, picked up the one Jack had returned, and got Steal 4.
"Nice!", said Sawamura.
Jack looked from the happy Sawamura to the burning stare of Huxley.
"For a guy who's going to spend the winter focusing on speed, you sure are slow", said Huxley.
...
One week later, Jack walked out of the Detroit international Airport into a cold, snowy, industrial landscape. Phil Huxley approached, wearing his standard of all black clothing. His black boots crunching in the snow.
"Where's your car?", asked Jack
Phil gave him a side glance, "I don't drive", he said, "But she does" pointing to a woman leaning against a black sedan parked across the street.
Huxley introduced the woman as Sophie, and she invited Jack to throw his bags into the trunk. "See you guys at home" she said in a European accent Jack could not place. With that, she drove away.
"Wait, so how are we getting to your place?", said Jack.
"We run".
...
Eight weeks later, Jack and Paul returned to Arizona to join up with the rest of the Pirates. Jefferson Jackson noticed them first, fist bumping Huxley, and giving Jack a stare, while noticing something different about the kid.
...
And once they hit the field, it was quite noticeable that Jack had really improved since they had last been on the field as a team.
It was quite difficult for Jackson, or anyone else to get a pitch past him in batting practice, and he was outrunning the fastest--or formerly fastest--player on the team, Huxley, in sprints.

"Looks like you're ready to move up in the lineup" said Alfonzo to Jack. "Glad you put the work in this winter"

JACK's winter conditioning upgrades CON+8, SPD+9, ARM+1, ERES+1, CTL+35

Jack Caselli
TRJ 1, 15 CON, PWR 60, SPD 15, ARM 4, FLD 7, ERES 5, BreakupDP,

Friday/Saturday practice sessions, December 4/5

The Pirates had secured two games against the Atlanta Braves old timers club for Sunday the 6th.
In the meantime, they took the field, and Alfonzo was watching closely along with new pitching coach Orlando Hernandez on how they might best make improvements.

The first thing that becam clear was that Bob would be moving back to second base, where he'd been an all star the year before, and Estefania would be the new shortstop.
That meant Dusty, Lance and Jack would need to play more outfield to get playing time.
Jack had recovered enough on the travel day to participate in practice, and they were shagging fly balls and making outfield throws with passable skill by Saturday.
Dusty, Lance, John, Jack +1 FLD, +1 ARM

El Duque pulled John aside, and said that if he really wanted to improve his pitching, then El Duque would help. But john needed to understand that it would probably mean that he would advance more slowly as a hitter.
Does John want to:
A. Focus on Pitching
B. Stay with a balanced approach to pitching and hitting

Just noticed the Duke is the pitching coach. YAY. :yay:

Dusty was having a blast at the holiday party. The fruit punch was off the hook, and he was refilling his cup with abandon.
Hollywood Bob Davis sidled up to his bunkmate, "Take it easy on that stuff Dusty", he cautioned, "you're going to throw yourself out of balance." Dusty nodded, but was soon back at the punchbowl for another round.
Gift time rolled around, and Dusty decided to trade his gift in. He picked out a bat, and unwrapped it to find the PullHitter ability.
...
Over the Xmas holiday, Dusty went home and spent countless hours working on his game in his fathers garage.
Jumping rope, the stationary bicycle, and a daily running of the foreboding Steep Mountain.
On New Year's Day, his father commended his work. Dusty had greatly improved his endurance since they had done this work a year before.
Dusty's Stamina +25.
...
Two weeks before the Pirates were due to re-unite in Arizona, Dusty and Bob met up for two weeks of training at Bobs family compound. Dusty arrived in his pickup truck, and rang a buzzer at the gate. Bobs dad answered the door. Dusty was almost speechless. "You're...Eric Davis?", asked Dusty.
"Yes, and you must be Dusty. Robert speaks well of you. Please, come in."
They walked down a hallway filled with bats, jerseys, and maybe the best part: a picture of a the senior Davis kissing the Reds World Series trophy as Mariano Duncan doused him with champagne.
When they got to where Bob was lounging, he said hello, but he was too busy
answering messages on Tinder to join Dusty out in the batting cage. Dusty noticed Eric Davis shaking his head at his sons apathy. He showed Dusty to the family batting cage.
...
Two weeks later, Eric Davis had helped Dusty increase his contact(+10) and power(+50), and even taught Dusty the Slider he'd once taught to Bob.
...
Alfonzo Brown was so happy to see his ball club progressing. Dusty had added so much power that Alfonzo was going to have to move down in the batting order.

No way, Duds. Somebody named their character Dusty, probably to mess with the heads of the other people involved.
Im working on your update, and your player is taking over the setup role.
Love all around baby.

Lance Derby waited until he got to the airport to open his Xmas gift. He'd done so under the advice of team captain Cristobal Santos, who had taken Lance under his wing once they'd began rooming together.
He was reading the details of his plane ticket when a meaty hand slapped him on the shoulder. "Hola mijo," said Cristobal, "I hope you remembered to pack your appetite. Mi familia is going to fatten you up."
"Sounds good to me big man. Can't wait to meet them."
"Now, before we go, open that gift."
"Oh yeah," said Derby, pulling the gift from his bags. He unwrapped it to find the Tough Out ability.
"Excellent !", said Derby.
Cristobal nodded approvingly.
...
The Santos family embraced Lance like a lost son, including him in conversations even though he barely spoke any Spanish. And oh did they feed him. He felt himself growing stronger with every chachapa, empanada, and all the pabellon criollo that came his way. (PWR +25),(STAM+10)
...
Cristobal had been playing winter ball in Venezuela since he was 16. Though sticking in the majors had eluded him, he was nonetheless beloved in his home country. Twice he had been named league MVP. He was the captain of the Leones del Caracas, his hometown team. Lance was brought on to the team at Cristobals request, although he would have to earn his playing time.
And earn some playing time he did. Pinch hitting in his first appearance, he doubled to start a late rally.
During a bullpen session, with Cristobal catching, lance whipped in a fastball that had Cristobal remove his mitt and rub his hand, "Mijo, I don't get popped like that very often. I think that home cooking is paying off for you." (TopSpd+14)
Cristobal then showed Lance the grip for a Hard Sinker, which he managed to learn better than Cristobal himself.
(gained H-SNK 3)
...
By the end of the VWL, Derby was hitting behind Cristobal in the cleanup spot, and had taken over the closer role. The 2016 season was looking promising for the young man.

John Bradley considered the gift he'd been given at the white elephant party. He wasn't sure about it, so he walked over to the table of other gifts he could trade it in for.
He sensed someone behind him, and turned his head to see El Duque peeking over his shoulder. "Keep that one, Johnny", said the Pirates pitching coach, "it has something you need."
John opened it up to find the Dr K. ability.
...
John walked into the Los Angeles Union Station on New Year's Day with a determined look in his eyes. The time he'd spent with family had been great, and they had been very encouraging about his prospects for the new baseball season approaching.
Cassius Patterson was waiting outside, and greeted John with a hug. The roommates had become good friends in their short time together. They had made a plan to train together that winter, as both he and Cassius were anxious to try and get onto a major league team.
...
They actually spent little time on a baseball diamond, and much more time at Salty's Gym, a boxing gym that was owned and operated by Cassius' father.
Salty Sam Patterson had sparred with many great boxers. Photos of Sam posing with Marvin Haggler, Roberto Duran, Oscar De La Hoya, among many others decorated Salty's office.
...
Their days would begin early with cardio work. Strength training would follow.
They alternated their afternoons with sparring and pitching.
Evenings were reserved for studies and discussion of those studies.
Although lacking a formal education, Salty Sam had been a student of philosophy from a young age, and he had passed on that passion to his son Cassius.
From Nietzsche to Plato to Camus and Lao Tsu--with some Satchel Paige peppered in--they deconstructed thought to its core, and John was fascinated.
...
On the mound, he was making strides toward playing a major role for the Pirates.
He learned the curveball from Cassius(CRV 2), improved his fastball (TopSpd+5), as well as sharpening his control (CTL + 25)
...
Once back with his teammates in Arizona, he found that all the other conditioning he'd done had improved his batting (PWR+25), running (SPD+5), and his fielding (FLD +5)
