Post subject:  International NHL '12 Log (Russia)
This log will be on NHL '12, but with National teams replacing normal NHL teams, teams like Russia, Canada, USA, specifically, it will follow team Russia. Because this is a GM Mode, the teams obviously won't stay with only the players of that country, trades and free agency will still happen, salary cap will need to be off, for both obvious and complicated reasons. Also, because there are only 21 National teams, 9 other teams will be created to fill the other spots, made out of players that aren't on a National roster (tons are Canadians who weren't good enough for team Canada), as well as old Legends coming out of retirement, draft lotteries and drafts will be held to try to balance these teams somewhat.

These are those 9 teams:

The Russian GM gave his input on his strategy to working with this team:
"We have a very talented team, a lot of other teams have a lot of talent as well, but I think we can seriously compete with all of the best in this league, I don't think I have to make any immediate moves with our team like this. However, we have a lot of older players on our team, so if we can't win in the first few years of our Franchise, I might have to make some moves for youth and draft picks to replace some of our retiring players."

After a 4-0 preseason, the Russians were looking to continue that trend going into the regular season, it didn't look promising, as they were down 3-1 going into the third period, and Ward was playing great for Quebec City the first two periods. Radulov scored for Russia to make it a 3-2 game, but then Nabokov allowed a goal on a weak point shot, making it a very difficult game to come back from, down 4-2. Datsyuk managed to get sprung for a breakaway to make it a 4-3 game, and then he got a one timer in front of the net in the final minute of regulation to send it to OT. Datsyuk would look to finish his hat trick and win the game all in one shot, but Quebec City was covering him, instead, Markov managed to hit Volchenkov with a pass as he was skating in hard, he one-timed an amazing slapshot that beat Ward, giving the Russians the 5-4 OT victory.

Russia's coach was met for comment:
"It was really an amazing win and a great comeback, our goalie allowed a weak goal that looked like it would be a killer to our team, but our offense just refused to let that happen, and managed to comeback with some great goals and a win. I just hope Nabokov doesn't make a habit of allowing goals like that. I think I may start Bryzgalov next game instead."

October Game Results:

Quebec City at Russia: 4-5 OT win
Russia at Kazakhstan: 6-2 win
Russia at Moncton: 6-1 win (weak goalies for Moncton, we were actually outshot this game)
Russia at France: 7-1 win
Russia at Great Britain: 8-1 win
Switzerland at Russia: 1-7 win (Switzerland scored first, then Russia scored 7 consecutive goals, giving Switzerland their first loss of the season)
Norway at Russia: 1-7 win (Bryzgalov has started every game since the first one because he's been playing too dominant to switch him out)
Slovakia at Russia: 3-1 loss (Close game, Halak was easily what won the game for them, first star and .974 save %)
Russia at Great Britain: 9-5 win (So many goals this game, most were on the powerplay)
Finland at Russia: 1-2 shootout win
Vancouver at Russia: 1-2 shootout win (We have so much trouble scoring goals whenever we face a good goalie)

Russia went an amazing 10-1-0 to start off the season, making them #1 not only in their division, not only in their conference, but #1 in all of the NHL.

Russia's GM/Coach had the following comments:
"It's been a great year for us so far, an amazing start, we played some fairly weak teams, but we were able to win against some strong ones as well, even if it was just barely. I believe that month has answered our goalie question, whether Nabokov or Bryzgalov will be the main starter for us, I was leaning towards Nabokov before, but now it's clear Bryzgalov will lead the way in net. Our skaters like Ovechkin, Malkin, Semin, Datsyuk, pretty much everyone you would expect had a great month to lead us to the top of the NHL, now that we're there, I don't think we plan to give up that spot."

Through 11 games, here are notable stats for the Russian players:
Semin: 11 goals, 8 assists, 19 points
Ovechkin: 11 goals, 21 assists, 32 points
Malkin: 10 goals, 11 assists, 21 points
Datsyuk: 7 goals, 20 assists, 27 points
Bryzgalov: 9 games played, 8-1 record, 1.31 GAA, .945 SV%

November Game Results:

Russia at Belarus: 4-3 win (They almost came back from down 3 goals in 3 minutes)
Russia at Slovakia: 5-4 OT win (An exciting game, Slovakia came back from trailing 3-0, with a 3-3 tie in the last minute, Ovechkin scored to give Russia the lead, you would think that would be enough, but with 16 seconds left Slovakia tied it, Ovechkin would score the winning goal in OT)
Russia at Finland: 4-1 win
Russia at Ukraine: 4-1 win
Russia at Italy: 4-1 win
Russia at Austria: 2-3 loss
Sweden at Russia: 0-3 win
Ukraine at Russia: 2-5 win
Boston at Russia: 3-2 loss (We always have big problems against great goalies, and this was Patrick Roy, he saved 47 shots to beat us)
Russia at Denmark: 5-2 win
Russia at Moscow: 1-2 loss (No explanation for this, we played a bad goalie and weak defense, yet couldn't score goals...)
Russia at Springfield: 4-2 win
Kazakhstan at Russia: 1-6 win

Russia went 10-3 in November, making their overall record 20-4-0, they still hold a 1 point lead for 1st place in the NHL.

"I knew we would be good, but I'm still surprised at how good we are, we lost a few games this month, but they were all really close losses that could have been won with a little of luck. I think I can just keep the team the way it is without making any moves, and we'll keep winning, and as the GM, that's really my only goal. Win."

Ovechkin: 19 goals, 27 assists, 46 points
Malkin: 18 goals, 20 assists, 38 points

December Game Results:

Norway at Russia: 2-5 win
Belarus at Russia: 0-4 win
Denmark at Russia: 1-4 win
Russia at Japan: 7-2 win
Russia at Boston: 3-4 loss (Completely ridiculous, both their goalies were godly and my team took about 30 minutes worth of penalties, allowing multiple powerplay goals)
Russia at Kazakhstan: 4-2 win
Russia at Czech Republic: 3-4 loss (Their goalie was flat-out unbeatable most of the time, the referees made plainly moronic calls, and my goalie allowed several weak goals, including one late, of course their player had to go through several solid objects to even get the shot)
Russia at Canada: 4-1 win (This game made it clear why Luongo was always leading the league in GAA. Hint: It's not because he makes a lot of saves. The Canadians are amazing at preventing shots)
Slovakia at Russia: 0-2 win
France at Russia: 3-5 win (Too close for comfort against a team like this)
Belarus at Russia: 1-7 win
Great Britain at Russia: 0-3 win
Russia at Springfield: 2-0 win
Russia at Austria: 3-2 OT win (Could have easily been a shutout if my players didn't take so many major penalties every game)
Russia at Italy: 3-0 win

Russia went 13-2 in December, putting their record at 33-6-0, they finally have a comfortable lead in the NHL, leading by 9 points, as Russia has been the only team able to keep up their torrid pace. They lead the NHL by 9 points now.

"It's great, we no longer have to worry about winning every game to keep our lead, and I think that lack of pressure is causing us to play our game in a more focused way and the wins come naturally, maybe even easier. We had a tough schedule that month to maintain our great record, Czech Republic, Canada and Slovakia? And Boston is for some reason a really tough team for us. Our goalie pair is continuing to play great more often than not."

Ovechkin: 28 goals, 40 assists, 68 points
Malkin: 27 goals, 32 assists, 59 points
Kovalchuk: 20 goals, 19 assists, 39 points

January Game Results:

Springfield at Russia: 4-3 shootout loss (Had 3-0 lead, then Springfield took a 5 minute and 2 minute penalty at the same time, we couldn't score on the ridiculously long powerplay chances, then they came back to tie it...)
Slovakia at Russia: 1-3 win
Russia at USA: 1-3 loss (At this point in the season, our team still doesn't realize that taking 100 bad penalties in every close game is a bad thing...)
Russia at Germany: 5-0 win
Russia at Stockholm: 5-4 OT win (Goalies were all awful)
Russia at Finland: 2-0 win
Austria at Russia: 4-5 shootout win
Italy at Russia: 2-5 win
Springfield at Russia: 2-1 loss (Their goalie was beyond godly compared to any human goalie in the history of the game)
Great Britain at Russia: 4-1 loss (Yes, you read that right, a 4-1 loss to GREAT BRITAIN... No words to describe this... Of course we gave up 3 powerplay goals in about 5 minutes, morons... Even after the win, Great Britain is still the second worst team in the NHL, 20 points ahead of last place Japan)

Blue win All-Star Game 6-1:

It was 2-1 before the 3rd period, when they opened up the game with 4 more goals, one a lucky bounce with 3 seconds left in the game.

Last game of January, results:
Ukraine at Russia: 0-8 win

Russia went 7-3-1 in February, making their record 40-9-1 overall, they still lead the NHL, but not by much after this month.

"It was a pretty bad month for us, I hope we can forget about it moving forward, in February I want to see us as that team that dominated Ukraine, not that team that lost horribly to Great Britain, if we show up as them... We're just lucky we should have almost enough points to make the playoffs already."

February:

Trade deadline is near the end of the month, will Russia make any moves or be content with their current roster at least until the end of the season?

Onto game results:

France at Russia: 1-4 win
Russia at Denmark: 6-1 win
Russia at Norway: 6-1 win
Russia at Slovakia: 3-2 win
Russia at Belarus: 3-4 loss
Russia at Moscow: 2-8 loss (Ouch...)
Denmark at Russia: 0-5 win
Canada at Russia: 2-5 win
Russia at Great Britain: 6-5 OT win (Bryzgalov was absolutely horrible this game, the team was barely able to save him, this is the first time I've seen a goalie win a Star of the Game when coming in to replace the first goalie, but their goalie won second star, after the first goalie allowed 5 goals he came in and saved 24 of 25 shots against him. Russia won no Stars of the Game despite winning the game)
Russia at Norway: 2-3 OT loss (When there were 5 minutes left in regulation and Norway killed a penalty, I knew we were doomed to lose, and on a powerplay goal, obviously, because our team just can't grasp the concept of avoiding penalties)
Russia at France: 4-3 OT win (Our goalies have been playing terribly lately)
Russia at Poland: 3-0 win
Russia at Latvia: 2-0 win (Their goalie save 45 of the 46 shots he faced, keeping them in it the whole game)

Russia will have a home game against Moscow on the same day as the trade deadline, will they be able to get revenge on their last horrifying loss? Will they trade anyone? Russia's GM was asked about his trade deadline plans.

"I really don't expect us to make any trades this season, we're first in the NHL, so we don't really need anything. I was considering at one point trading Nabokov, but I watched his games closely this month, and I really think that having both of our skilled goalies is a big part of our success, I don't think either of them would be able to carry the team by themselves. I would rather get something back for Nabokov than have him retire and get nothing from him, but giving him up at the deadline seems like it would really hurt the end of our season. I'll consider offers, but I can't think of any I'd take, and besides, we haven't received a single trade offer all season."

Trade Deadline Trades:

Russia:
Trades Alex Kovalev and Maxim Afinienov to Slovakia for Zack Phillips, Mikael Granlund, Nick Palmieri, and 2 5th round draft picks.

Other:
Austria trades Andreas Nodl to Great Britain for Evgeny Artyukhin and a 4th round pick.

"I wasn't really planning for trades much, but this was a really easy trade to make, I'm surprised a team would accept trading away those players for what we got them for. The two players we traded away were replaced with a couple younger players who will easily become as talented, as well as a player who has a chance to become something, and a couple draft picks that probably won't matter, but you never know, I mean, Datsyuk was drafted in the 6th round."


After the trade deadline, Russia would go on to crush Moscow 9-3, avenging their horrible loss to them earlier in the month.

The final stretch before the playoffs, March and April regular season games:

Finland at Russia: 5-2 loss (Bryzgalov was beyond brutal)
Detroit at Russia: 3-4 win
Latvia at Russia: 0-3 win
Weisswasser at Russia: 3-2 shootout loss (I knew Gretzky would score this game...)
Japan at Russia: 1-10 win (Ovechkin pretty much disappeared off this team's goal scoring, he can't even score when the team gets 10 now)
Moscow at Russia: 3-4 shootout win (Palmieri scored 4 goals the last 2 games, 2 in each of them, already looking to be a good trade, 2 goals in a 10-1 win doesn't mean much, but in a 4-3 OT win? Definitely helpful)
Kazakhstan at Russia: 2-7 win
Russia at Slovakia: 2-1 win
Russia at Ukraine: 10-1 win
Russia at Latvia: 3-0 win

"I'm going to have to seriously consider moving Malkin up to the first line next season, getting that many goals to lead the NHL in a season is ridiculous. Nabokov has earned the starting spot for our playoff run, so we'll roll with him and see how it goes, because our team has been so successful with Malkin on the second line, I don't want to move him and possibly screw up team chemistry, we can experiment with that next season."

An official poll on the NHL website shows that 95% of people believe that Russia will win this round, based on the difference of skill, a sweep is entirely possible.
