I went in my room to play some Madden when my mom came in. "Seth, you need to get ready for school tomorrow. It's your first day of high school!" I grunted and then asked, "Okay, what do I need?" "Well, you need clothes to wear. You also need baseball stuff and a 3-ring binder." I got up and went into my closet to get my baseball stuff. I found a clean 3-ring binder in there too, and it already had paper and pencils in it! I put the stuff down over near my backpack. I went back into my room and played Madden 12 on my PS3 until it was time for dinner (I was the Saints and lost to the Packers 21-17 :( ) After eating I went outside and threw a baseball around for a while. At around 9 my brother Jake came outside and told me to come in. I said okay and wandered into the house. I took a shower, brushed my teeth and went to bed. The next morning I woke up and got ready for school. I put on my favorite green T-shirt and a pair of jean shorts. I ate my breakfast (waffles and an apple) and walked down the street to school (it was only 2 blocks over). I went to all my classes (Geometry, World History, Biology, Spanish, and Art) before heading to baseball. I went out to the practice field and stretched for a while, then jogged out to where some teammates were playing catch. I only recognized 3 of them, my friend Alexander Smith and two of my classmates last year, Tim Cormier and Peter Smith (no relation).

CHOOSE WISELY!

A. Play catch with Alexander
B. Play catch with Peter and Tim
C. Play catch with someone else
D. Run 10 laps around the field
E. Play pepper with Alexander, Peter, and Tim
F. Pretend to play catch but really throw the ball over everyone's heads

I decided to play catch with Alexander. We threw the ball around for a bit then Coach called us over. He told us that we would be starting with BP against the pitchers. The first pitcher up was a junior named Jon Reynolds. He looked to have a good fastball and a decent changeup. I was the 4th batter up and I faced a new pitcher, Dan Thompson. He threw two pitches which were both 2-seamers. The next pitch was a slider and I swung and missed. He threw a 2-seamer again which just caught the corner.

CHOOSE WISELY!

A. Turn around, argue
B. Look for the slider
C. Look for the 2SFB
D. Charge mound
E. Call time and tie your shoe for 20 minutes

I looked for a 2-seamer, but didn't get it. Dan threw me a curve and I struck out. My next at-bat was against my brother, Harrison. He threw a fastball. Strike one. Another fastball. Strike two. The next pitch was yet another fastball. I swung and hit it to left field. The left fielder, Evan Nichols, watched the ball and ran in towards its path. He dived and missed. I ran around second and went for third. As I hit third I looked back and Evan was just picking up the ball. I rounded third and sprinted home. Evan got the ball and tried to throw it all the way home. The third baseman, Ron Henry, cut it off and held it, and I had an inside-the-park homer! My third at-bat was against Matthew Thompson. He threw 5 sinkers to run the count full, then threw a slurve. I laced a rope over second and right fielder Nathan Daniels tracked it down. He threw it in and I stopped at first. My fourth at-bat came against the final pitcher, closer Jordan Jimenez. He threw a 4-seamer and two cutters, and the count was 3-0. His next pitch was a 4-seamer down the middle. I took it. His next pitch was a knuckle curve and I took it for ball 4. The next batter was my competition, Damon Guthrie. He struck out swinging and practice was over.

CHOOSE WISELY!

A. Rest
B. Practice (CON, PWR, RUN SPD, General Fielding)
C. Play MLBPP12
D. Play explicit rap music on the loudest volume setting

The next day was Tuesday. I woke up as usual, went to school as usual, practiced as usual. The routine was the same until Friday. Alexander and I showed up and no one else did. We threw the ball around for a while, looking around occasionally to see if this was a prank or hazing or something. It wasn't, and we headed home after about 15 minutes. We passed Coach on the way back. "Where are you off to?" he asked. "Home, no one's at practice!" I said. "Why don't you pay attention to the announcements, Stevens? We're all in the locker room."

We got into the locker room and saw a list posted. I guess it was the list of people who made the team.

Pitchers were listed first.

"Reynolds, Stevens, Hamilton, Johnson, Barrett, Jimenez..."

Then hitters.

"Miller, Ryan, Guthrie, Henry, Fowler, Williams, Nichols, Martin, Daniels..."

Neither of us made it! I can't believe it!

Coach said those of us who didn't make it were on JV.

CHOOSE WISELY!

A. Train hard and hope to make it next year
B. Transfer elsewhere
C. Play on JV, try to make varsity as a Sophomore/Junior
D. Give up on baseball
E. Give up on life

I decided to train hard and try again next year. I went home and over the next 3 weeks, trained every aspect of my game.

Then I got a call from Coach one night. He told me something important. He told me one of our players, 3rd baseman Ron Henry, had come down with a big injury. He said he was going to call someone up from JV but he didn't know who yet. He told me to go to the varsity practice field the next week and he would decide who was fit for the job. He also said to relay these instructions to the other JV hitters, Ben and Nick. I did so and went to sleep.

As Ben, Nick, and I went to practice on Monday, we talked. About this opportunity, about our experiences, stuff like that. We got to the field and the JV pitchers were there too! They tossed us some BP before Coach came over. He told us one hitter would move up to varsity and one pitcher would as well, he told us that Harrison had been suspended from the team indefinitely. We said okay and went out to play catch. I threw with another freshman, pitcher Andy Roth. He told me he was glad for the opportunity and hoped we both made it. When we were done Coach told us all to come over. He was going to set up a live practice with the varsity fielders! He told them to all come over, and we all hit against the four JV pitchers. I went 2-for-5, Nick was 0-for-4, but Ben...Ben had a huge day and went 5-for-5 with 3 doubles and a home run!

After practice we exchanged phone numbers. I went home and did my homework.
