It was my senior year at the University of Iowa. We were playing our final game of the season against Minnesota. The coach walked over to me. "Ritter, you're pitching today." I gave up only 3 hits in 8 innings before going back out- on 108 pitches- for the ninth. I struck out the first two batters and got the next to a 2-2 count. I decided to give him my 94-mph heat. I wound up and fired to home. As I threw, I felt something pop in my shoulder. The pitch was strike three but I had to undergo Tommy John surgery. I had been projected as the #1 pick in the 2011 draft but my stock drastically plummeted and I am now projected as going #72 to the Astros.

Today is the day before the draft and I don't know what to do.

I decided to just work on my control in preparation for any action I might get during the season. I then got some good rest.

I woke up the next morning, June 6th, took a shower, got dressed, and ate breakfast. I decided to turn the TV on to the live coverage just in time for the 69th pick. "With the 69th pick in the 2011 MLB Draft," said Bud Selig, "the Oakland Athletics select Jerry Ritter, pitcher, Iowa." I ran around the room in excitement before texting some of my friends about it. I decided I needed to improve because I was going to start playing soon, probably. Just then, Oakland GM Billy Beane called. "Hey, just wanted to let you know, we wanted to meet with you and your agent on the 9th to discuss contract terms." I said okay and hung up. I needed to practice, but didn't know what.

I worked extensively on my control the next 3 days before heading out to the meeting with Mr. Beane.

I went into the previously agreed upon location- In-N-Out Burger- and immediately saw my agent, "Special" Ed Michaels. I went over to his table and sat down. The waiter came over to ask what I wanted.

I told the waiter I would have a burger, fries, and a Coke. He went off to get the order in and we started talking. A minute later Beane showed up. He said "Later, we need to go to my office, I have 3 contract offers for you." He then explained the 3 offers. The waiter got back with our food, Beane ordered the same as me, and we ate in silence. We then went to his office where he showed us the three contracts. He asked me which I preferred.
