Hey everyone, I was thinking about this on another message board about how people come to root for the team they now support. Was it because they are the hometown team? Their colors and mascot? Maybe because of an experience?

I actually used to root for the Orioles because I was born in Maryland, but that all changed after the New York Yankees won their World Series in 1996. Also, I had gone to a Tampa Yankees game and one of the players tossed me his hat (I still have it to this day and finally figured out who the player was)! Another factor was family, both parents were from NY and my bro was a big Mets fan.

How about y'all?

Hmm this is a very good question you asked Mascot. Reasons being someone asked me the same question at work and my reponses puzzled him in my case for instances.

My response was the Expos/Nationals, and my friend said why, you are not from canada or from DC. I'am from the U.S. Virgin Islands "St. Croix to be exact" yes I said that right.
Growing up in St. Croix we played baseball everday and every free time we had. My favorite player was and is still Vladimir Guerrero, watching him play back then for the Expos was just the best. And being from the Caribbean like him, I took to him very much. Since the demise of the Expos and Vladdy now playing for the Orioles. I will follow the orioles but heart and passion will stay with both the franchise "Nationals" and Vladdy.

My three favorite teams, the Braves, Red Sox and A's, I like for different reasons.

Atlanta is the closest franchise to my city in NC growing up, so I liked them. My dad was also a fan. He also like the Red Sox. This basicly got me started on that track for both teams. I went to an interleague series between the two teams in 06, and saw Beckett and Hudson pitch, two of my favorite pitchers to this day. But, we left the day John Smoltz faced off against Curt Schilling  so that was dissapointing.

The A's I became a fan of after reading Moneyball by Micheal Lewis. I loved the concept behind it. So I follow them not as avidly, but they still are one of my favorites.

The two Chigago teams are the only other teams I have non-"Oh they're just really bad, so how can I root AGAINST them" feelings for i.e. Pirates, Royals, etc. The Cubs I grew up as my third fav from watching them on WGN tv in my living room. The White Sox are my local minor league's affiliate club, so I kinda HAVE to like them a bit.

I'd also like to ask a question. Who is your favorite player and why are they? My favorite player is Matt Diaz, who now plays outfield for the Pirates. When I went to a minor league game in Durham with my Great Uncle, he hit a grand slam that landed near where I was sitting. I was a fan for him ever since he got called up with the Braves, so that made be excited. I also like Jon Garland, who used to pitch for my hometown team.

Hmm... well, when I was 1 and my sister was 3 (we were already living in the Chicago area), our parents took us to a White Sox game. We cried. So a few years later they decided to show us a Cubs game when they were in the 2003 playoffs and we were instantly hooked.

My dad grew up in a suburb of Seattle and my grandpa is a huge Mariners fan, so they're my second favorite.

My mom used to work in the Library of Congress, so we have friends in DC who like the Orioles, who are my 3rd favorite team.

As for favorite player, I've gotta go with Derrek Lee. He's a good player, but he's also just a good guy.

That just shows how how much faith people in DC have about the Nationals.

They were living there LONG before the Nats moved in and refused to switch teams.

I really think the Nats have a bright future, and will be able to secure a strong fan base in no time. With all their young talent, Strasburg, Harper, Storen, Zimmerman, and Zimmermann, etc., I believe people in D.C. will get excited.

For me it's simple: the Stros are the hometown team.

I like the expos, mariners, and rockies...Sadly the reasons I like them are mostly video games and stuff I've heard, like the blake street bombers, finding out about Ichiro, and having Todd Helton being my favorite player.

I like the Brewers, because they are the hometown team. I liked the Cardinals, until I was about 7, because my first game was a Cardinals vs. Pirates game, and Albert Pujols hit a homer. I just started liking the Brewers recently, since their games are always on the radio, I go to a bunch of their games, and my dad's a fan.

Thanks, Goodways. You asked a very good question too, LightningMan117. I don't have a set singular favorite player, but I liked most of the Yankees as players and for some that are good off the field as well (Posada, Williams, Rivera etc.).

I think Evan Longoria is a fantastic player as well, he seems like a class act off the field, and I see him as probably one of the few players who would stick with one organization his whole career (unless something drastic happens, then he more than welcome to join the Yankees!).

I am a Phillie phan because they are the hometown team. However, after I learned more about the teams, I realized that I also preferred the Phillie playstyle and teamwork better than other teams (although the fans really are obnoxious). My favorite player is Chase Utley, not only because he is on the Phillies but also because I really like his skill set and he is also underrated. My second favorite player is Jayson Werth, because he is one of the most underrated players in baseball and because he has an epic beard :) . Sucks that he went to the Nationals though, nobody will remember him anymore...

I became a big White Sox fan in the early 90's when Frank Thomas and Robin Ventura put the team into contention and never looked back.

Favorite player is Hunter Pence. I like the way he plays and I've frequently been told that I look like him.

He was a decent 2B with a solid stick, but he also owns in Life Mode on my end too.
