Post subject:  Wii - Mario Kart?

Hey guys,

Just curious if any of the Wii Power Pros here have played the new Mario Kart. I have it, but frankly I think it's bad for my blood pressure! It's ok in 50cc, but past that the CPU really seems to cheat in the difficult modes. And I don't just mean mean driving a little bit faster than you. I'm talking about when you're dominating the race, only 3 turns to go and you're hit by an unavoidable first place seeking blue shell WHILE you're jumping over lava. Of course, this makes you fall into the lava and when you're fished out, you find yourself hit by a red turtle shell and end up in 3rd place no matter how good a driver you are.. I start off my mornings with a little mario kart, but end up frustrated and switch to power pros for a much better time :P

The new game is really fun. I have spent the better part of the last three days playing it and I like it more than the last game. It is harder to an extent but at least it isn't too easy.

I like seeing all the old school levels. I wish you could carry two items at once though like in Mario Kart double dash. Also, I haven't got the hang of the wheel yet. I seem to do much better with the GC controller.

And yes they do cheat in 150cc!
If you just want to win, it's better to stay in the back and get some good item like the bullet bill and wait till the last lap and dust em'.
But to get those stars, you have to dominate the whole race hoping not to get hit by too many of those dang blue shells. Sometimes tough to do.

I haven't seen it, or I guess any previous versions either.

Pretty good game then? When you say it is hard, are there adjustable difficulty levels? Would it be pretty much impossible for a 9 year old or 6 year old to play?

Well, as you get up in speed it does get pretty hard. It is easier to control the game with the 'chuck. Using the wheel becomes a liability at 150cc.

Yeah I got him.

Which reminds me of another thing I don't like about this new game....
In Double Dash, each character had a unique ability, unlike this game where every character is virtually the same. Only the karts make a difference.

I just got the game today and i have to say this is the best game I have played on the wii. The computers are not to easy but not to hard. The online play is amazing and lots of fun. I love the old courses that they put in the game and also love the new ones. I understand now why this game was sold out for weeks its one of the best out there. I got to say great job nintendo.

There was another thread about this game not too long ago. Actually I just got it this week too, same day as you. I haven't spent a ton of time with it yet, but it's a lot of fun. I hadn't played any previous version of Mario Kart, so it's all new to me. I did just a couple of online races last night. From reading people complain on the gamespot/gamefaqs Wii forum I wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised at how smooth it was. I'm not much of an online player (cheaters/quitters chased me off years ago), but I can see myself playing this one online.

Last night was one of those "this is what the Wii is all about" moments for us. With my wife and I using gamecube controllers and my 9 and 6 year olds using Wiimotes, the 4 of us did multiplayer team races and had a blast :)

Finally picked Mario Kart up last week. To answer my own question from above, my 9 year old holds his own just fine. I haven't seen him do any 150cc races yet, but he wins a good percentage of 100cc races against the CPU opponents. My 6 year old doesn't do as well, she's getting better but she still crashes too much to finish in the top half of the pack of a race. But she's still having a lot of fun, and it's only a matter of practice keeping the kart on the track :)

My code is ZNK-SLR9-6AAQ-4F3

After giving this game a lot of time, I honestly have to say that I like Double Dash for Gamecube a little better, even though the online factor is great.

Double Dash has more shortcuts in the races (I love looking for shortcuts) and like I've said before, you can carry two items in Double Dash AND use whichever one you want at any time.

I'm not a big fan of the tricks off of the jumps, you can't turbo slide, they cheat way more in this game, and the characters don't have their own special move. What happened to the big ball and chain that baby Mario and Luigi had. That was the coolest weapon imo.

I have been a Mario Kart fan ever since the SNES version came out and anticipated this game for many months, but I am sadly dissapointed. However, this is still one of the best racing games (as far as fun factor) that you can find.

I guess I'll just have to wait for the next Mario Kart.

I stand corrected on the turbo slide.

Seems you must be in manual mode to do it. I was always doing automatic before. (hold R for a second while turning)
This game just got a little better for me.

Has anyone got three stars on every level? Now that's hard!

I've gotten two stars on just about everything but three seems nearly impossible -- even in 50cc.

Youtube videos are very helpful.

Now that I see how and basically when to powerslide, maybe three stars ARE possible. Still, very hard though. On the videos you can see that these people run through the course flawlessly. Each lap identical to the next.

It takes a lot of practice to master the turns like that. I don't know if I have the time to get THAT good with Mlbpp 08' just around the corner. The good thing is, Mario Kart games are usually good for two or three yrs before they finally come out with a new one.

Can't wait to play online when I finally get a wireless router. Hopefully its not consumed with a bunch of pros. Even if it is, the game keeps it pretty close, giving everyone a chance. After all, no matter how good you are, you can't control the randomness. It's what I hate when I'm winning, and love when I'm losing.
